Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

In regards to the 31 per artist idea... just one artist per person, and only one artist among all of us. One person gets them and that's it.

Ranked lists would be interesting and provide some fun strategy in selecting artists.

I could run it. I would be able to post each night around 9pm mt.

There are dozens of new artists for me on these last 3 count downs and it would be awesome to dig deeper on all of them.
I would not be able to run any contests. If someone wants to help do that....

pm sent

The movie stuff largely kept me away from this draft, but I was :stalker: .

I think a few actually liked the Opeth picks. I think I saw them pop up on @Pip's Invitation posts a few times and a couple others. IF anybody is interested in exploring albums, most of the songs I took are from albums that are all clean lyrics and proggy. I think the hardest albums to choose from were Pale Communion and Sorceress, so I would start any adventure there.
Since the thread is almost over, how about some Opeth closing credits?

I was going to message you and some others about this. You said you had some travel coming up.

When would be a good deadline to send in lists to determine artists for each one of us?

And then I was thinking about another month for people to create and send me their lists. What do you think?

Oh, I can send in my list of artists any time. No problem on that. And once I have my artist, it won't be hard for me to come up with my songs*, so that's not a problem for me either. My travel would only interfere with my ability to do a massive countdown with calculations and ****, which this isn't and I'm not running anyway!

*Pipe down, Pip.

I'm good with whatever everyone is comfortable with on the song count - but would prefer the 31 song count if we're throwing out our thoughts.

Me too, but also good with anything.

Same here.

Any artist, or one that was chosen in one of the drafts?

I'm confused.

And 3 bourbons in.

Someone explain this to me in Friday night high language.

you pick an artist and pull together your top songs for just that artist (the amount of songs still being decided ...somewhere between 20 - 31)

in order to obtain your artist - you pm Zegras with your preferred group/artist and a back up. Tie-breakers have not yet been decided either.

Oh. I thought this had to do with covers or something?

My concern with this approach is that you will need like minded participants. At the very least open minded.
Several of us are rather eclectic in our tastes and if narrowed down to one artist, 75% of the participants are likely to tune out to an artist they do not like or choose not to understand further than they already know. I concede I would be the same if eg Styx or REO Speedwagon were chosen.

Best of luck with whatever you run with.

I am highly confident in your ability to get past not being allowed to use William Hung.

Instead of 31, should we do top 20? Uruk said simey suggested that. I can't find the post lol
I'd prefer top 20. Would allow someone to pick a newer artist who may only have 3-4 albums or older one that had a short career
Part of whether 31 or 20 for me may come down to how rigid would define artist? If I pick a solo artist who does a one-off album with another solo artist (or maybe has songs featuring other artists), able to include that? Or would I just be limited to that artist’s pure solo songs/albums?

I could see saying if you pick a solo artist, you can’t pick where a member of a band though (e.g., if pick John Lennon as solo artist, don't pick from The Beatles catalog).

If there is name is on it, you can list it. Doesn't have to be just solo.

Here's another thing. Min is 20. Max is 31.
There could be some really good choices with some that only muster up 20.
Those who do this just won't have any songs listed until I get down to 20.

So leave any number between 20 and 31.

very good point.

but that could be counteracted by having somebody else rank your chosen artist's songs.

say, for example, you (JML) pick the Stranglers - ok, so you rank your top 20 or 25, or whatever the decided on number is, and submit that as the master list for them.

now, say there are 30 participants - there could be a draft held where we would get to choose who we would like to rank our artist - so, in this case, when your draft pick comes up you choose simey to rank the Stranglers songs - you would send her those 20/25 songs alphabetically, as to not influence - but the ranking master list is held, and would be revealed as we went along (e.g., #20 ranked by simey is "Walk on By", which was ranked #11 by JML) ... makes sense?

or instead of a draft to assign, it could all be drawn by random - only catch is a participant cannot wind up ranking their own submitted artist.

this would necessitate listening to the batch of songs by the artist assigned you, as the ranking is required - and by having them sent alphabetically, as i mentioned before, it removes at least some bias.

dunno if you lot have tried this before? as i pop in and outta here quite a bit, and have missed a ton of these drafts/rankings/etc

So do we send @Zegras11 a PM with our artist list? Is that sort of how we're proceeding?
Yes please.

I'll start a thread Monday night when I get back to Boise.

Preference list deadline will be Sun 4/30. 5pm MT. I'll do the reveal that night of the pick results. I'll get binky to send me his email address so that any random spins results go to him also.

I have SIX lists so far!!!

Happy Neil Day!!!

So I missed out on these middle aged dummies draftish type of things, but am thinking about jumping in this next one.

I get that I send a list of artists I would want to rank. I am assigned one of the artist by sim mysterious process (not sure if there are Eephus magic dice involved or not). I then rank the top 20-31 songs from that artist via PM.

What happens then? Are everyone’s #20 (or 31) songs released and we discuss? Then #19, and so on? Anything else? Do I need to do writeups for why By-Tor and the Snow Dog is my #17th favorite Rush song (spoiler alert)? Argue with JML regarding why Kilroy Was Here represented a watershed moment for Styx and shouldn’t be included in the group’s canon (Not My Styx)?

I really like some form of this idea as a supplement to the whole thing. I remember in some draft that we ended up being paired with people and had to listen to each other's choices. I feel certain that's how I came across Los Campesinos!(!) and a few others I liked, maybe someone else with "orange" in their name?

I sent you a list already but I may add to it and/or change the order before 4/30. Thanks!

Sorry - I'm still birthday-hungover. I'm not getting how this will be ordered. How are we initially selecting our artists?
You would just submit your choice(s) of artist to Zegras11 - if he got two requests for the same artist then he would randomly chose who would get that artist and the other person would get their second choice.

So to be safe, people should send a list of several? When are the lists due, for randomization determinations?
Sorry just saw this. Yes to the first question. I do not know the answer to your second.

really like these thoughts - definitely like the idea of releasing everyone's particular # pick at the same time.

I think it would be good to know who each person has an artist well prior to the list submission - then we can come up with some kind of contest.

one possible idea - blind draw to get assigned 2 or 3 artists each of us are asked to guess songs that will be included in the other person's rankings. Then pts are awarded based on where those songs appear in those persons lists - ex.) if it's their #31 song and you guessed it would be on their list you would get 1pt. - if it was their #1 ranked song you would get 31 pts.

you don't have to try and rank them - you just pick some number of their songs - 5 -10 maybe - and where ever they land you get those pts.

I would volunteer to track it.

I don't feel strongly enough about who my artist is to want to take anyone away from another person who wants them. I'll just pick up a free agent on waivers after the 30th.
While I feel strongly about my artists I am confident more than 1 won't be picked, so I'll do the same.

What would be more fun for the audience: someone posting 31 songs from an unfamiliar artist or hearing a deeper cut/rankings of artist they are familiar with?

Ties string around finger as a reminder to go back few pages in this thread and peruse. Is this an opportunity for me to blast out 31 Headstones songs?

Someone explain this to me in Friday night high language.

you pick an artist and pull together your top songs for just that artist (the amount of songs still being decided ...somewhere between 20 - 31)

in order to obtain your artist - you pm Zegras with your preferred group/artist and a back up. Tie-breakers have not yet been decided either.

Oh. I thought this had to do with covers or something?

Meant to reply to this earlier. There was talk of a covers draft or countdown, and I am willing to run that one in a few months.

plinko/JuddZilla mentioned he would love to be in any kind of covers draft, and he particularly was interested in doing a Beatles covers draft.
