Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

I actually think Piano Man is brilliant. It paints such distinct word pictures - you know exactly what each of those denizens look like and what the atmosphere is in that bar.

I like Pressure best - it's the closest thing he does to a rock song.

I enjoy Billy Joel, but he has a few hits that I absolutely cannot stand. These two, Matter of Trust, and River of Dreams. The latter of which may be the worst piece of music ever made.
I like a lot of Billy Joel's 70s music, and some of his early 80s stuff. Songs In the Attic will always be one of my favorite live albums.

Have Queensryche tour FB ads coming up now. Thanks, dummies!
I'm not seeing an umlaut there, sister.

That reminds me that I wanted to mention that I have limitations on my keyboard abilities, and carets and umlauts and all the rest in this international countdown will sorely test me. Therefore I won't be using any of them unless they were in the original list sent to me.
You can always do what I do. I copy the word from Wikipedia and paste it here. All those cute umlauts come along with.

Cyrillic alphabet gonna hit hard in this one, tho ... that's alotta Wiki work.
Yeah, I’ve done that in the past here and there, but ain’t got no time for it.

My list is in!
Knowing our tastes aren’t that similar, I didn’t expect to know a lot of yours, but then the first two segments came in,* and I thought cool, I recognize this stuff. Then #25-31 arrived.

*Rw sent his list in three segments, which is why there were a few decimal places on the number of lists yesterday.
WHAT? You’re not a connoisseur of Scandinavian death metal?

Probably more surprising, I'm not either. Like a lot of the music but hate cookie monster vocals.

The original excepted, right? "C is for Cookie" is a banger.

So, I need input. Do you want my Japanese Heavy Metal selections in Kanji, roman-letters but Japanese language, or translated into English?

I know things are expensive and I live in one of the most crazy-expensive areas of the country and labor costs in particular are insane here but really $40k+ for a remodel of a teeny bathroom I'm talking like 5x6' being generous and that doesn't include stuff like the sink or the toilet or the tile or the freaking towel holders really?

Someone help me out here...is this normal (I mean the cost, not the run-on sentence)? @Chaos34 ? @Uruk-Hai ? Others in the know?

$50 - $60K will get me a pretty nice completely remodeled 12' x 15' master bath with custom shower, tub, sinks, fixtures, toilet and cabinets ...everything ...including flooring.

My entry has been submitted.

Artist Country Count
  • Australia - 12
  • Canada - 10
  • Peru - 2
  • Colombia - 1
  • Denmark - 1
  • France - 1
  • Netherlands - 1
  • New Zealand - 1
  • Niger - 1
  • Mutt (1 US member) - 1
Chalk entries - 3

Decades - I'll have to tally later, but there are a couple from the 60s, and one song that was released in Oct 2022.
Really throwin some shrimps on the barbie

That does seem crazy expensive! I could get a new roof and a whole house generator for less than that in Michigan.

OK, that's helpful. I've never done a bathroom remodel so didn't know if my expectations were just whacked. But that price seemed outlandish to me. Guess I'll need to get another estimate. I was really impressed with these people, and they're booking out six months, so I guess someone is willing to pay that. :topcat:

That does seem pricy. We did a pretty much gut and start over remodel of our master bath when we moved into our new home 5 1/2 years ago - ripped out all the old stuff and put in a big walk in double shower, replaced the toilet, new linen cabinets, all new tile, ripped out the water closet walls, moved the entry door, and put in a new wall and door into the walk in closet - only thing we kept was the vanity and sinks. All that (at the time) was like $25K. I know Texas is cheaper than where you are, but 40K for that small of a bathroom and not even doing everything seems a bit much.

Maybe the solution is moving again?

There must be something in the water - we're in the process of doing another bathroom upgrade as well. This time it's a fancy new Smart Toilet - heated seat, bidet, dryer, remote control... the works.

Three different heat levels for the seat!

Any thoughts on the ***OFFICIAL*** contest? I'll do more "fun" questions for the SUPER-AWESOME-WORLD-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111, but those will take a while to figure out once I start tabulating. I'd love to have done some that were country-specific, but (1) not everyone has sent country information on their picks (which is fine), and (2) all the posts about where your picks came from prevent me from doing any "Will there be any picks from Benin"-type questions.

We'd do something more straightforward for the ***OFFICIAL*** contest, as usual. Maybe just a straight guess of the top 10 artists? What do you guys prefer?

18 lists in! I'm sorry that in prior countdowns I gave a lot of teasers along the way and haven't done it here, but I've just been so far behind that I haven't been calculating anything.

I will say, though, that the countdown is verrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting. There are some harder rock artists doing extremely well. There are a couple of artists that were nowhere near my radar that are having very strong showings. And there is an artist that is at or near the tippy top of rankings that I wouldn't have expected. Going to be very fun to see how it all shakes out!

One more reminder: if you choose someone like Neil Young or Joni Mitchell who might not be on Spotify, it's nice if you send a substitute cover of the song for playlist purposes. You don't have to, but I'd expect you might wish to choose your own cover instead of leaving @Hawks64 to choose a John Mayer or Jack Johnson cover. ;) I'll send a note to those who haven't done this to ask if you want one. I'm not going to cover all artists on this as I have no idea who else might not be on Spotify.

Still working through the previous list and I'm wondering...

Typically, how long does it take before you decide you do/don't like a new song? I'd guess on average for me it's somewhere around 8-10 seconds. Certainly less than 20.
Typically? Agreed, but I generally give it a bit before I pass judgment. No preset time though. If I did then I never would've found one of my most favorite pieces of music ever made. By itself the first 3 1/2 mins of Jane's Addiction's Three Days would be forgettable, but they're essential to setting the stage for the rest of that epic.

In a way I view it similarly as Meeting Across The River laying the groundwork for Jungleland.
A song came on the shuffle today that reinforced this. I forget what draft it was, but I picked Sturgill's Sailor's Guide and had to put up 2 songs for someone random to give a listen. It may have been krista actually.

But anyway, I chose Welcome To Earth and Call To Arms. Pip is now aware why I chose the former, but whoever it was that listened commented on Welcome to Earth that through 2.5 minutes they didn't understand what the big deal was with this guy. Then the song kicked in and they found out why. I think that track is a great table setter and Call To Arms may be one of the best closers ever made, but the journey to get there? Well, now you have to listen.

But you've gotta get through the extended lead-in to the opener.

Scary time this morning, as mom4 - latter day Wrighteous Ray on here - fell and hit her head and had to go to ER. She's all right now, and just looks ugly with a bunch of stitches and a fat lip. I'm just hopeful all continues well for the next 24 hours. I had a friend die a month ago of a subdural hematoma.
Is it a full frickin moon?

So I get a frantic call from my 13 y.o. daughter this AM about an hour after I got to work. She's crying.....her mom is on the ground and bleeding.....she can't stand blood.....like she may pass out and then there's two people down!....I say is she conscious? Yes ...ok, let me talk to her! Apparently she had a vaso vagal, passed out, fell from a kitchen stool and smacked her head.....my 10 y.o. son was tending to her.....he is a brave little dude, and he's a total Mama's boy. I jumped in my truck and hauled *** home! I work 15 minutes away.....my kids were relieved to see me....they were scared for their mom! I coordinated some friends to get em to school, took my wife to the ER....shes lucid, making sense, but she's got a gash on her forehead that needs stitches and I want to make sure not brain bleed.....twe went to the smaller town ER that's maybe 7 minutes farther away instead of the crazy busy one we are closer to. She gets right in....stictched up, clear head/c-spine CT....she's sore as hell, and looks like she took left hook from Mike Tyson.

She's had a few of these episodes in the past, so I'm pretty well versed......still its scary as hell. When you lose consciousness and go down you do not protect yourself....you hit hard.

It's not a huge number, but at least two, and maybe three, of the songs on my list will be directly attributable to drafts or countdowns here. Right now I think two on my list came from Genrepaloozas and one might have come from @shuke 's mega-countdown. Whatever it was, they were definitely from you guys, which I think is really cool. I say 2-3 because my list is still not solid, but I've vowed to myself that I am going to be the 20th list in, so after I get one more I'm going to input mine wherever it stands at the time. :)

Oh man, I'm so glad she's OK!

My mom also had a fall about three years ago. That time I was there, and she fell backward and gashed her head and was bleeding something fierce. Luckily mom and her husband were both medical people so told me what to do, and also I'm very calm in crises, but the amount of blood and HOLY **** IT'S MY MOM had me panicked internally. Like you I really worried about internal bleed and spent a sleepless night checking to make sure she was OK.

By the way, OH's reaction was to ask me what team's helmet we were going to buy her as a joke.

Terrifying. Glad she’s okay, Manster. That’s awful.

Actually, IF I chose a Neil song, it's probably acceptable to use any CSNY live version.

NO SPOILERS!!

I can point you (or anyone else who takes Neil) toward alternate versions or covers if desired.

I can point you (or anyone else who takes Neil) toward alternate versions or covers if desired.

By the way, I was trying to use your Neil thread for research, and all the links on the first post are bad now. I think it's due to the board change, and I expect all my carefully cultivated Beatles thread links are bad, too. :topcat:

I know things are expensive and I live in one of the most crazy-expensive areas of the country and labor costs in particular are insane here but really $40k+ for a remodel of a teeny bathroom I'm talking like 5x6' being generous and that doesn't include stuff like the sink or the toilet or the tile or the freaking towel holders really?

Someone help me out here...is this normal (I mean the cost, not the run-on sentence)? @Chaos34 ? @Uruk-Hai ? Others in the know?
Way too expensive. Is that your only quote so far? I would get at least 2 or 3 more.

Yep, they stopped working when the board changed. FYI Rockin' in the Free World is missing from Spotify again after mysteriously returning for a bit.

Yeah, I reached out to another company today. Had actually had them scheduled before we met with the first one, but we were so sold on the first (before getting the quotes) that I canceled, like a dummy.

That does seem crazy expensive! I could get a new roof and a whole house generator for less than that in Michigan.

$50 - $60K will get me a pretty nice completely remodeled 12' x 15' master bath with custom shower, tub, sinks, fixtures, toilet and cabinets ...everything ...including flooring.

OK, that's helpful. I've never done a bathroom remodel so didn't know if my expectations were just whacked. But that price seemed outlandish to me. Guess I'll need to get another estimate. I was really impressed with these people, and they're booking out six months, so I guess someone is willing to pay that. :topcat:
Just exactly what are they doing to your bathroom? If it isn't the tiles, toilet, vanity, or fixtures, what else is there?

They’d be doing the labor for that, but the $42k price didn’t include the materials.

Replacing the cabinetry and installing a new (not included) sink, laying (not included) floor tile, installing a walk-in shower instead of the shower/tub combo, painting. Mostly.

ETA: A little electrical to move the light fixtures. Also installing a new door.

So DMB is eligible this draft, any fills in by me will 💯 be DMB ;)

So glad she's ok but man that is really scary. Especially for kids to see that happen.

Black Metal >>>> Death Metal.

Norwegian Black Metal > e'rrything under the metal um(laut)brella.

I think it's been posted in one of these threads before, but Sturgill's version of Call to Arms on SNL is one of the great performances in the history of the show. The way the musicians are reacting is awesome as they know they are slaughtering it. https://youtu.be/qsrsrOB0zNQ

Sturgill is great in multiple ways, but the fact that each album is so drastically different than the last, and that he can pull off all types of music (while still singing like a hick from Kentucky) is my favorite.
