Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

Scary time this morning, as mom4 - latter day Wrighteous Ray on here - fell and hit her head and had to go to ER. She's all right now, and just looks ugly with a bunch of stitches and a fat lip. I'm just hopeful all continues well for the next 24 hours. I had a friend die a month ago of a subdural hematoma.

just seeing this. Best to you and your Mom, k4. Any update? That’s scary.

Interesting. I haven't thought long on it but I can't come up with a song that I let grow on me. If I'm not foot tapping or head bobbing pretty quickly on a song then it's a nope and it stays a nope.

She's doing OK today but said her lips are swollen about twice as much as yesterday, and even yesterday she was joking how people pay a lot of money to get the big lips she had then. But seemingly she is doing fine.

I’m not sure I can get a list in, BTW. Will be following along at some point, but things have come up, to say the least. peace y’all…

 So sorry to hear this (about "things," not the list). Use this thread however you wish in the coming weeks, even if just to vent.

every time i sit here in my home office and say okay dummie start your list or something. i don't. i need motivation. i can say, that when i've given this a little thought, it seems very easy. 31 unique artists is no problem. not doubling up on one dude gives me a headache. two of his songs are huge loves of mine. but i am determined to pick one, probably the less popular one hoping the other gets picked by someone else.

since the last countdown my listening has been modern lofi stuff, jazz, classical, insturmental acoustic guitar. just background music that i enjoy. i think that is part of why i'm not motivated to dig into the usual suspects here.

Lots of lists coming in now with tons of variety. There was an interesting phenomenon with the first seven lists that has not continued with the more recent ones. I have no idea where this is going to end up. So much more variety in tastes and selections than the prior ones, as you might expect. Should be a lot of fun!

I still did not pick any kazoo bands.

Interested to see who wins the battle of the oceanfronts, Pacific vs Atlantic. Assumes North American countries cancel themselves out; and Colombia?

Are you back from NOLA?
Just boarded my last flight. I’ll be home in a few hours.

Still working through the previous list and I'm wondering...

Typically, how long does it take before you decide you do/don't like a new song? I'd guess on average for me it's somewhere around 8-10 seconds. Certainly less than 20.
Typically? Agreed, but I generally give it a bit before I pass judgment. No preset time though. If I did then I never would've found one of my most favorite pieces of music ever made. By itself the first 3 1/2 mins of Jane's Addiction's Three Days would be forgettable, but they're essential to setting the stage for the rest of that epic.

In a way I view it similarly as Meeting Across The River laying the groundwork for Jungleland.

current breakdown ...not locked in quite yet ...

also - male dominated lead vocals - only 1 female lead and 2 with both female/male lead vocals

several giants not in my top 31.

10 Tie: "She's Got A Way" & "She's Always A Woman". Good Lord. These make Ike Turner look like Gloria Steinem. Joel tried to ret-con them after the fact but, in addition to being out of date 50 years before he released them, the records themselves suck.

9 thru 3. Every version of "Piano Man" he ever performed. Given that Paul Simon was having hits at this time, saying this is the most pretentious record of all-time is a heavy burden to prove. No, it's not. This is as horrible as pop music gets.

2. "Allentown". I knew AOR was dead before this piece of crap came out but, when I heard it hourly on the formerly hip DC101, I was convinced. "Dumb" doesn't even describe this waste of wax.

1. "Uptown Girl". This is actually a good song. If I squint hard enough, I could see Prince or Springsteen doing it. Unfortunately, we get stuck with an "ok" record that could have been great by anyone else (including Paul Simon).

******* UH ...that is funny :lmao:

the disgust just drips off the screen

I have just thought that adding a second track from the artist I currently have at number 1 and then switching their order would make sense from a countdown context standpoint, but I won't do that. May well still add said track in, but #1 staying #1

He is the worst superstar of my lifetime. I don't blame anyone that loves his music (narrator: yes, he does...me: shut up, narrator and stop selling me out), ........I forgot where I was even going with this. Carry on, my friends.

I would probably guess that 90% of the songs I love I know it within the first 30 seconds. Two artists that are common exceptions to this rule are Stephen Malkmus and The Flaming Lips.
Agree but there’s also plenty of songs that didn’t catch my attention that I heat later and it does catch my attention. My radar misses sometimes so I never make too firm of a judgement on any song.

My grandpappy used to tell me to never trust anyone with two first names. Maybe the old drunk was right after all. Twice in this case.

@krista4 thinking emote should be obvious if you look at my last five out

I hit "thinking" before I got to your later post saying you'd submitted. I thought the first post was a potential change to the list you'd submitted, since I saw that first.

This is funny, for sure. But I like She's Got a Way, Piano Man, and Allentown. Not saying any of them are top songs of genre or anything like that, but I like them.

Billy Joel is not one of my top 100 favorite artists, but I find your hate for him / his music bizarre. I've seen him in concert, and I thought he was quite good. Again,
