This is funny, for sure. But I like She's Got a Way, Piano Man, and Allentown. Not saying any of them are top songs of genre or anything like that, but I like them.
Billy Joel is not one of my top 100 favorite artists, but I find your hate for him / his music bizarre. I've seen him in concert, and I thought he was quite good. Again,![]()
Yeah, I never understood how/why he got so popular.
Oh sure. This is classified as "energy and excitement" but when I tried the same thing I'm labeled a negative, insensitive jerk! This is funny, for sure. But I like She's Got a Way, Piano Man, and Allentown. Not saying any of them are top songs of genre or anything like that, but I like them.

I kinda like She's Got a Way, too. I know Uruk doesn't like Billy Joel, but the over-the-top stuff seems like shtick to me, which I enjoy. The thread needed a little energy and excitement.![]()

sweet - I see that a lot of you guys focused more on a broader path of countries
I tried mostly to capture those bands I really like that fell between the cracks in the US and UK drafts - so a ton of UK - US combos and the obvious alternatives of Canada and Australia.
I promise not to criticize the picks I think are garbage.Oh sure. This is classified as "energy and excitement" but when I tried the same thing I'm labeled a negative, insensitive jerk!

I know you're joking, or at least you ******* better be, but for the uninitiated, I'd like to remind everyone that we try in these countdowns to employ The Thumper Rule. These threads aren't about criticizing other people's picks but for people to enjoy the listening and the discussion and to pick up some new tunes. I predict we're all going to end up with even more "new-to-us" songs we love in this countdown, given the lists I've seen so far!
I think Allentown is awful, but love the other two. Sure Piano Man is over-played.10 Tie: "She's Got A Way" & "She's Always A Woman". Good Lord. These make Ike Turner look like Gloria Steinem. Joel tried to ret-con them after the fact but, in addition to being out of date 50 years before he released them, the records themselves suck.
9 thru 3. Every version of "Piano Man" he ever performed. Given that Paul Simon was having hits at this time, saying this is the most pretentious record of all-time is a heavy burden to prove. No, it's not. This is as horrible as pop music gets.
2. "Allentown". I knew AOR was dead before this piece of crap came out but, when I heard it hourly on the formerly hip DC101, I was convinced. "Dumb" doesn't even describe this waste of wax.
1. "Uptown Girl". This is actually a good song. If I squint hard enough, I could see Prince or Springsteen doing it. Unfortunately, we get stuck with an "ok" record that could have been great by anyone else (including Paul Simon).

I continue to be very concerned about falguy, who hasn't visited since Feb. 16.
I was going to post in the Missing FBGs thread, but it looks like that thread got locked.I continue to be very concerned about falguy, who hasn't visited since Feb. 16. I've done some Googling with his first name and city he lives in, but I'm unable to figure out his last name. Hopefully he will show up again.
In the event he's not here in time for the countdown, is there anyone good with spreadsheets (or merely adequate with them) who can take over that aspect? I'll have my own data, but it will be cumulative to the end, so not very fun if we can't get a snapshot of the standings at various times along the way.
Maybe @Eephus will post @ditkaburgers revised One Direction rankings in this thread.
Wow. People must really be working hard on their lists, to have NO posts here in, like, 14 hours.
Speaking of which, DrIanMalcolm and I have three songs (one of which gets an asterisk, which will be explained when it is revealed) and 13 artists in common on our lists for this countdown. No bingoes.Just a reminder that we should implement an FFA Buddy System.

I call JML_alter ego.Just a reminder that we should implement an FFA Buddy System.
i should probably get started on this
I don’t get the hate necessarily but can see why some may not like him. He’s more “show-tunes” than “rock-star”. He has a great voice and his band is more than capable.

There are so many fewer bingoes in this. I know of one Deja Vote at a very high point value, and there are some song duplicates, but nothing like the last one. My daily listening parties are going to take a lot longer since I so many of these songs are new to me!
re: billy joel. there was a poll here awhile ago: who's better billy joel or bruce springsteen?
i voted for bruce and noticed billy had a sizeable lead. i didn't visit this site for three months.

While I truly do not like any of his songs, it's mostly this. I rag on him mainly for my own amusement.Plus while it’s sincere I’m sure, at this point it’s also schtick for @Uruk-Hai

Cyrillic alphabet gonna hit hard in this one, tho ... that's alotta Wiki work.
I enjoy Billy Joel, but he has a few hits that I absolutely cannot stand. These two, Matter of Trust, and River of Dreams. The latter of which may be the worst piece of music ever made.2. Is "River Of Dreams" the "In the middle of the night" thing? Ain't no way I'm going to check on my own. It's bad, but still not worse than "Piano Man", though - at least it moves where "Piano Man" just sits there dying like a fish on a beach (Coney Island, maybe).I enjoy Billy Joel, but he has a few hits that I absolutely cannot stand. Cliff Richard says, "Not necessarily good enough."I just found out Billy Joel was actually born in Canada, so the good news is that he is eligible for this countdown.

This is one of those songs that I know isn't any good and there was a couple decade period of my life in which I probably didn't listen to it a single time, but our kids enjoy it immensely and it's worn on me over the last few years. It'll probably revert back to the pile as they age never to be heard from again to me, but for now...it's fine. The playlist in Hell's lobby assuredly contains We Didn't Start The Fire.
He does sometimes seem to be trying too hard to prove his New York credentials.I just found out Billy Joel was actually born in Canada, so the good news is that he is eligible for this countdown.
