Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

I'm also excited because I'm actually going to be visiting my daughter in Denmark and Norway (with a quick trip into Sweden so I can add another country) for 14 days in the middle of this reveal and have a song from each of them in my playlist. Very apropos.
I love all three of those places so will be living vicariously through any stories you can post. Have a blast and bring lots of money!
Nice. We've got a tentative itinerary but a lot of flexibility so any suggested must-sees would be appreciated. My daughter lives in Copenhagen so we've seen a lot of the city but nothing else in the country. And none of us have ever been to Norway.

PM me if you have any must-do/sees.

If you're in Stockholm for your side trip, this is a very cool restaurant to try. The food is great and the history and atmosphere are amazing.

There seems to be a distinct lack of energy and excitement over this one compared to the rest. Maybe it's because we're not in here posting about ineligibles? I apologize that I've also been crazy-busy and haven't participated as much. Hopefully as we get close to the actual countdown the excitement will grow.
I am much more excited about this one than the other two. Mainly because i didnt participate in the other two, but still

I'm excited especially since I missed the previous ones. I've been crazy busy since Feb 22nd- dinner with relatives in from Denver and Virginia, 4 birthday's, 2 "death storms" and a comic book show. Have my list of artists with songs down to 38 and just trying to put them in order and make the final cuts.

It's a timing thing here as I'm back to coaching again. If I have a window to listen It's generally about 21 hours after posting and limited to primarily just weekdays. I will try to keep up, but probably won't.

The non-vetting aspect surely takes away a lot of the potential pre-game chatter.
There’s also probably a bit of burn-out after the other two, but once the countdown gets underway, I expect it to be just as active as the other two.

Sounds like you have Copenhagen covered and I'm sure my limited Stockholm recs would be outdated or unnecessary, but Norway was amazing and I'm still trying to convince my wife (who kind-of hates the cold) to go back and make it farther north (like Lofoten and Tromso). We only spent a day in Oslo and did the old Munch Museum, Opera House, and Vigeland sculpture garden. After that, it was two weeks exploring nature. Made it as far north as Trondheim then back down the west coast for the fjords. The most scenic drives I've ever experienced and the hiking was top-notch. Especially loved the town of Alesund and the 2-3 days hiking some of the surrounding islands. The only downside is that eating out is crazy expensive so we learned quickly to cook at the cabins and to embrace the joy of gas-station hot dogs.

Apologies, I'm on the wagon; even contemplating going to the gym. Will probably end up with a playlist consisting mostly of Anne Murray and Scandanavian death metal.

Submitted my list last night. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't really subject folks to 31 non-US/UK industrial songs so broke things down into three equal categories (plus one leftover):

1. Songs that violated the Zanzibar rule
2. Electronic songs that packed the floor over the course of three decades (mostly industrial/EBM with a side of electro to break the monotony)
3. Favorites (non-electronic) without US/UK members

Rough country count (adds up to more than 31)

US 10
UK 6
Canada 4
Denmark 4
Australia 3
Sweden 3
Germany 2
Belgium 2
Israel 2
Norway 2
Jamaica 1
Iceland 1
New Zealand 1
Cuba 1
Brazil 1
Bahamas 1
France 1
Barbados 1

 I'm a little shocked you have 4 pre-80s records in this one. Will be interested in seeing what they are.

On another note, is the Penguin Bar still there on Maiden Choice in Arbutus? It was right across from the shopping center that has the Mars grocery store back when I lived on College Ave.

It is. I'm not down in that part of Arbutus often so had to look it up. I recognized the building in the photo but just thought it was a seedy liquor store. Had no idea it was called The Penguin.

It was named that when I lived there, but that was back in the late '00s. I think it had asbestos siding on it even then  The regular crowd was a little rough inside, but it was close so.......

I'm having some ineligibles come through on lists. Again I will not be vetting these like I did before, but if something stands out to me I'll note it. Mostly, though, you're on your own so please review carefully!

going over the AE list(s) from priors put a slightly different paint job on all this.

but the cheat codes will be eschewed - plenty of schlock to rooster a full XXXI without borrowing one from Column A, etc, as it were.

we need to be posting the reason(s) why an artist/song qualifies though ...right?

Thanks for the suggestions. It sounds like we're doing a similar trip. We'll be in Oslo for just a day too but plan to see those sites. First we're driving to Fredrickstad where my wife's ancestors are from and then staying at a farm in Tjome. Then driving to Pulpit Rock and staying there for 2 nights with some cool hikes planned. To Bergen for 2 nights and on to Loen for 2 nights for more hiking and kayaking. Finishing in Alesund for 2 nights and then back to Oslo. Very, very excited for this trip.

I gotta a pretty big "pile up" of the more hard rockin' genre that didn't make the top 31.

That whole thing was never in my wheelhouse - though I enjoyed a few of them. No denying that a bunch of these bands are legendary.

Mentioned this before - but was really surprised at some bands that I liked their collection as a whole - but didn't have any special songs that could make the top 31 ...top 50-60 maybe.

Kronborg Castle, outside of Copenhagen, which is commonly known as "Hamlet's Castle," is a great one-day trip. So that's fun. In Stockholm, the restaurant called Stockholm Fisk was excellent; Stockholm is without a doubt the prettiest city I've ever been to, and that includes Paris and Barcelona.

Scary time this morning, as mom4 - latter day Wrighteous Ray on here - fell and hit her head and had to go to ER. She's all right now, and just looks ugly with a bunch of stitches and a fat lip. I'm just hopeful all continues well for the next 24 hours. I had a friend die a month ago of a subdural hematoma.

I’m so sorry to hear that - hope she feels better and sending healing vibes. 🙁

Why is this a question?

sorry ...more of a concern ...if it was related to some other problem

my wife's mother fell this winter getting out of the car - she's in pretty good health but stepped on a slanted part of the curb incline (flattened area for wheelchairs) and fell on the side of her head/face - really got bruised up badly. We took her to the emergency room got the x-rays and MRI scans to check for broken bones and concussion.

thankfully none - but had a little over a month of bruising.

Ah, I get it. She got up in the middle of the night to move the window shade up because her cat was playing with it, which he does and she does every night I guess. She has had some vertigo so I wondered if that was an issue, but she thought she either misjudged where she was on the bed when she rolled over, or she got caught up in sheets or something. It was 4:30 a,m.

That is scary af, glad she's doing well now, and hope she recovers quickly!

Almost ready to submit, have 3 songs in a battle royale for the last spot. Not as much stoner rock as I originally thought there would be mostly due to the fact that they mainly play 8 minute+ instrumentals.

That's scary. Several years ago my uncle passed (he was 78) when he fainted in a hardware store and his head hit the floor with full force. He was the coolest of cool uncles.

Still working through the previous list and I'm wondering...

Typically, how long does it take before you decide you do/don't like a new song? I'd guess on average for me it's somewhere around 8-10 seconds. Certainly less than 20.

Ideally 2 listens of a song, but at least the second chorus of a first listen or three minutes, whichever comes first.
Sometimes i know from the first three seconds, but I am patient and willing to have my mind changed.

Ive had songs that have taken 7-10 listens before I am on board. I keep listening because there is something there to persevere with.

My approach is shockingly similar. On the playlists for the first two countdowns, I gave everything three minutes even if I was fairly certain I hated the song within the first few seconds. There were definitely those where I watched the clock countdown and snipped it right at three minutes. But like you, some songs take a while to resonate with me, so if there is "something there," I'll give a lot of listens before I decide.

gotta go at least all or most of the way through (longer song ...like 6+ minutes).

sometimes I have to really fight off the urge to bail after the first 20 seconds or so, but can't justify to myself to not give it a full chance. It's worked out before and I have gotten through that initial period that I didn't like - and ended up really liking the song.

...but not a ton of times - it's definitely a negative EV effort. :D
