Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

MAC_32:

If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot - North Canada

Gordon was the guy I forgot about. Happy to see him listed already. He has a few songs that should make it.
I love this tune, it’s a near perfect ballad for me. I love several of Lightfoot’s other songs as well.

But hopefully nobody selected the one about the boating accident which never ends…

Previews of a few songs/artists on tomorrow's agenda:

- An artist taking an unexpected early lead.

- The song that had won the Ace Award until Binky's switcheroo lost it 28 points. No one chose it in the contest tiebreaker, so not a spoiler to tell you what it was. Oh, but by the way...

- The loss of TWO more songs guessed for the Ace Award.

- An artist named after a song by a British Isles countdown Big Three artist.

- A cover version of a song by another artist that will be in this countdown. Might the original also be selected?

- Our first appearance of an artist that was also selected in the British Isles countdown.

- Two artists whose lead singers will also be chosen separately in the same round tomorrow.

- One of these:

10. It’s Deja VoteVu All Over Again…Again.

Which of the following also-rans in prior countdowns will NOT have a song with a cover version in this countdown: (a) Cream, (b) George Michael, (c) Townes Van Zandt, (d) Warren Zevon, or (e) none of the above (all will be covered)?

I'll be posting a cover of the boating accident song at the appropriate time that includes bagpipes; it rocks hard too.

I will try and keep politics out of this, but Garrett was always Political in his lyrics…US Forces anyone?
He basically got the Greens party off the ground in Australia, but was politically hopeless. If theres a clip of him debating Bill Hayden, former leader of the Labor party and future Governor General, watch it. He is hilariously awful.

Full credit though, he did join the mainstream Labor Party and became a cabinent minister in several portfolios. After he left he pretty much went back to his mid 80s politics as he rejoined the Oils. He admitted selling his soul to try and better the system, but that the system had his measure.

I don't think any Orleans songs made the US countdown so Garrett has done better than John Hall.
Both of them are big fans of the warm power of the sun.

One of these is me! I love reading vague references to myself!

As much as I enjoyed Hey ***** I am kinda happy I found a better new to me. I have no idea what Prisencolinensinainciusol stands for, but that's getting a heart. Definitely getting some hip hop and funk sampling vibes from it and the harmonica coda is a perfect capper.

Today was an extremely strong collection of new-to-me songs. I wonder if subsequent days will be like this too, or if some people "saved" lesser-known songs that are special to them for #31 so they could showcase them first. I usually spotlight three or four but I think today deserves more.

New-to-me favorites from #31:

Hey ***** -- Izïa (Mister CIA). A tour de force of kickass.
Strong Reflection – Mars Red Sky (Raging Weasel). Stoner rockers who did some strong stuff. As I said, reminds me of Elder, my favorite "new" band from the US countdown.
Afrique Victime -- Mdou Moctar (Westerberg). The guitar work is otherworldly and the song itself is achingly beautiful.
Get Lucky -- Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers (DrIanMalcolm). Extremely bumpin'. I have never paid much attention to Daft Punk, and this song plus the one in Last Five Out tell me I need to rectify that.
Portrait Of A Man (Live at Auckland Town Hall) -- Marlon Williams (Eephus). As I said, it's like a bluesier Jeff Buckley.
Point That Thing Somewhere Else -- The Clean (Marco). The description of a Joy Division-U2 mashup is spot on.
Grave Digger -- Dave Matthews Band (Doc Oc). I might have heard this once because I saw Matthews play on SNL with Trey Anastasio and Tim Reynolds when the Some Devil album came out, and Wiki tells me this was its first single. But that was 20 years ago and during the height of my Lost Years. I'm not normally into his stuff but the gritty performance and compelling lyrics of this one won me over.

I'll probably fall behind on the new-to-me listening at times this week because of work and fantasy baseball prep, but on the first day I made sure to find the time.

Teenage Eephus thought Gordon Lightfoot was the blandest middle-of-the-road fodder but I was wrong. "If You Could Read My Mind" is an exceptional song; the melody, lyrics, vocals, picking, strings are just lovely.
Teenage MAC had similar thoughts. Middle aged MAC is a bit wiser. Although if I just progressed to a middle aged dummy then what the **** did I used to be? What a tale my thoughts could tell...

Grave Digger -- Dave Matthews Band

This was very good. I was listening a second time when OH walked through, and I scrambled to turn it off. He said, "Why are you turning that off? It's good." I didn't have the heart to tell him the artist. ;)
It may be a me thing, but I recommend giving the acoustic version a spin. I think the DMB glues a lot of his bigger tracks together well, but his downers are better when stripped down - i.e. Lilywhite Sessions.

Well. Here we are once again! I started out with a little Wolfmother. It was difficult to pick one song from that band, which may have been part of why they barely made it onto the list. OTOH, considering I own 3 albums of theirs (something that doesn’t hold true for all my selections, for sure), it was easy enough to find room for them.

Let's see. Some minor boundaries. Maybe I won’t react to some of the (perceived) bigger bands, but I reserve the right to put artists I selected in here. Just, you know, not songs I share in common. Also, each section is in order of playlist. Other than that? We’ll see where whimsy directs me.

#31s
Recognized by title alone: 18 (This includes “The Weight” pick from higgins)
Sounded familiar: 4
Didn't know: 20

Special Shout-Out: Pass The Kutchie (Doug B) - Let’s see. I know the melody, as of course I’ve heard the Kidz Bop edited version… er, I mean, the 80s altered cover version. I’ve heard a bit of the original. So not fully “recognized”, but definitely not totally unknown. Middle ground, I guess!

Selected Favorites:
Battle Without Honor or Humility (Val Rannous)
If You Could Read My Mind (MAC_32) - I’m a sucker for Gordon Lightfoot
Save It For Later (Hov34)
In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company (Chaos34)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Boys in Town (Pip’s Invitation)
Point That Thing Somewhere Else (The Dreaded Marco)
Strong Reflection (Raging Weasel)
Fences (KarmaPolice)

Get Lucky -- Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers (DrIanMalcolm). Extremely bumpin'. I have never paid much attention to Daft Punk, and this song plus the one in Last Five Out tell me I need to rectify that.
I'm surprised this is new to some of you, but also glad it's hitting your ears like it is.
As I said a few pages ago, I honestly can't remember whether I've heard it before. Aging is fun!

I saw them live when they opened for The Rolling Stones in '89 and they rocked.
I saw them at Shea Stadium on that tour.
I saw them at Carter-Finley Stadium. @Just Win Baby Were you there?

I was there in the 5th row on the field! Awesome show and memory.

I was also in the front 10 rows for the Who in CF that summer. And saw Pink Floyd both in Chapel Hill ( 🤢 ) and Carter-Finley in 1988. Those were good times!

Spoiler alert, dude!

Can someone please explain the Ace award thing again? Seems important and i would like to enjoy the subleties of this rundown.

As an aside from the 1 pointers
I have a song and artist combo with an exact match to come from this group
I have 2 artists with different songs on my lists
I have 3 artists, but not as they appear here...either solo not part of a double act or not solo but part of a double act or more

This is one of the bigger surprises for me so far too.

ETA: that is was new to a few people.

The Ace Award is presented to the artist who finishes with the highest number of points (being ranked 31 is 1, 30 is 2, etc) with only ONE song being chosen.

For example, right now William Hung is eligible after being chosen by... somebody or another ;) . However if anyone selects a second song from his no doubt vast catalogue, he'll be ineligible for the award. Due to the nature of one-hit wonders and such, only the top scorer gets the prize, though. Or maybe top 2 if Mark Ronson is involved. Though it isn't always that simple, as Cheap Trick's "Surrender" won for the US compilation.

Same here with all of those, except I didn't have 10th row. I did have 15th at the Grateful Dead at C-F. I got poison ivy on my butt tailgating out in the grass field prior to The Rolling Stones show. I had to pee, so I went up to that island of woods that is right near the gate where the Wolves Den bleachers used to be. I apparently squatted in some poison when I was peeing. The good thing is I went to Hawaii a few days later, and the salt water helped dry it up faster. I've told this story before so I'll make it much shorter, after The Who show we went downtown to the Holiday Inn to visit a friend that was a bartender there. My VW van wouldn't start when we were leaving, so I left it in the lot. The next day when going back to see if it needed a jump, the van moved like someone was in it. I banged on the outside window, and all of a sudden the curtains pull back, and some bug eyed freak is staring at me! This dude named "Eddie" broke into it and slept in it overnight, and he ate ribs that had been in a Tupperware, and the sauce was all over his face. Speeding up the story, he had skipped out on his bill at the Holiday Inn, and the police were called by our friend watching out the window at the top of the tower (top of Holiday Inn where bar and lounge is), he was arrested, he said the bag in my van wasn't his, we kept it and found lots of drugs in it, and I still have his bag to this day that I keep paints in. One of my friends still has his drug rug hoodie.

The newer music gets, the further away from it I am.

Same, which is one reason I started being more involved in music threads on this forum. I went through a period early in father hood in which not sure if hyperbole nothing new entered my ears for several consecutive years pre-covid.

yes. and i'm quite OK with that.

the only exposure i get (got) was via my daughter, mostly when she were younger ... most notably recall her 10th b'day party, where i brought in some "professional" karaoke foo' to entertain the kidz - all garbage tripe for the most part, but the Bruno Mars FUNK tune (Uptown Funk?) really made an impression - dug that one a ton ... she would also listen to Lady GaGa, etc

she's 17 now, and the music i hear wafting down from upstairs is usually Siouxsie, Cure, SOaD, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Nirvana, Misfits, Ramones, Type O, Beatles, Hendrix, Doors ... plus some pretty ambient metal - so, a mix of some of her mom's & dad's favorites, plus some of her own choosing (i don't know some of the bands, but they're relatively good rocking stuff).

she applies a great deal of it to her personal choreography for recitals (been dancing since 3 yrs old), and i'm quite the proud papa that she eschews the mindless autotune pop/hip-pop/hip-hop stench that most her age are just mining for vacuous tiktok vids, etc.

...same, again. My wife usually runs the play list when we are all driving together, but if I am playing taxi for the kids I let them take control. Last night to and from track practice we got The Boxer, La Grange, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Take Me Home Tonight. Big smile on my face across the first few bars of each track.

Give yourself a pat on the back for raising her well.

My daughter has been doing karate since she was five. She used to do form routines to music, like described for dance above.

Similar to @otb_lifer , when other girls were doing their "more like gymnastics than karate" routines to all the same boring techno music, my girl was doing her's to Monkey Wrench by The Foo Fighters and She Is Beautiful by Andrew WK. It kicked ***. We raised a confident woman. :boxing:

hell yeah! :hifive:

my gf (her mom) really influenced her a ton, as she did dancing all the way thru her college years, even becoming head of the theatrical dance troupe - she did an interpretive movement to "Nagasaki Nightmare" by Crass which won her a few awards and many accolades ... we all watched that performance together many times, though the vid is not the greatest quality (circa '04) - but it certainly made an impression on all that my daughter started to envision dance as being ... a most expressive art form culled as much from one's imagination and fluid passion as it is from dexterity.

- all that being said, i'm ngl ... one of my favorite dances my daughter ever did was a group piece to "Living On A Prayer" 😁 the theme of that year's recital was "Rockin' 80s!", and those kids ate them tunes the eff UP.

I feel like the appropriate response should always be turn it UP......my kids love it when I crank up some sludgy, doom metal.....they are Bruno Mars/TSwift kinda kids.

I assumed it was ubiquitous for a few years, and was one of Daft Punks songs people knew. I heard it everywhere, and I barely leave the house. Lol.
