Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Get Lucky -- Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers (DrIanMalcolm). Extremely bumpin'. I have never paid much attention to Daft Punk, and this song plus the one in Last Five Out tell me I need to rectify that.
I'm surprised this is new to some of you, but also glad it's hitting your ears like it is.

I'm floored people haven't heard this.
The newer music gets, the further away from it I am.

The newer music gets, the further away from it I am.
Same, which is one reason I started being more involved in music threads on this forum. I went through a period early in father hood in which not sure if hyperbole nothing new entered my ears for several consecutive years pre-covid.
Yes to all of this. Once my son was born in 2011, my encounters with new music and movies plummeted.

Now, there are a few songs that are so ubiquitous that they ended up on my radar anyway. The aforementioned Uptown Funk is one of those.

Answers to last night's teasers:

- An artist taking an unexpected early lead. Mdou Moctar, with three points.

- The song that had won the Ace Award until Binky's switcheroo lost it 28 points. No one chose it in the contest tiebreaker, so not a spoiler to tell you what it was. “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf Oh, but by the way...

- The loss of another song guessed for the Ace Award. Apologies to Power Station’s “Some Like It Hot” and “Layla” from Derek And The Dominos

- An artist named after a song by a British Isles countdown Big Three artist. Kashmir

- A cover version of a song by another artist that will be in this countdown. Might the original also be selected? “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” covered by Apoptygma Berzerk

- Our first appearance of an artist that was also selected in the British Isles countdown. AC/DC

- Two artists whose lead singers will also be chosen separately in the same round tomorrow. Queen/Freddie Mercury and The Police/Sting

- One of these:

10. It’s Deja VoteVu All Over Again…Again.

Which of the following also-rans in prior countdowns will NOT have a song with a cover version in this countdown: (a) Cream, (b) George Michael, (c) Townes Van Zandt, (d) Warren Zevon, or (e) none of the above (all will be covered)? “Careless Whisper,” covered by Seether

With the Get Lucky talk, this Grammy performance where joined by Stevie Wonder was fantastic.

(ETA: Just realized that link looks like to a rehearsal version. I’m sure the real thing is out there somewhere. Whatever — still awesome.)
With teases of vintage Chic and Wonder material to boot!

Can someone please explain the Ace award thing again? Seems important and i would like to enjoy the subleties of this rundown.

The Ace Award is presented to the artist who finishes with the highest number of points (being ranked 31 is 1, 30 is 2, etc) with only ONE song being chosen.

For example, right now William Hung is eligible after being chosen by... somebody or another ;) . However if anyone selects a second song from his no doubt vast catalogue, he'll be ineligible for the award. Due to the nature of one-hit wonders and such, only the top scorer gets the prize, though. Or maybe top 2 if Mark Ronson is involved. Though it isn't always that simple, as Cheap Trick's "Surrender" won for the US compilation.

Excellent explanation. I'd also add that it's only being used as the tiebreaker for the ***OFFICIAL*** contest, so maybe not that important, and also in the past two countdowns no one has gotten it right. In the British Isles, Mrs. Eephus turned in her list last and killed the chances of "She Sells Sanctuary," which had been leading for a long time at that point. I think in the US one, Hov34 might have killed "Let's Stay Together" with his 31-pointer, but it might have had fewer points than "Surrender" anyway. I'd have to double-check.

Oh, that reminds me, assuming no other changes to lists from Binky, I can see who won the ***OFFICIAL*** contest now (reversing his list resulted in our having a different #10 artist).

Well I got thru the first round playlist as best I could without using Spotify...

My faves of the round...

The Dead South......one of my favorite bands. This is their most popular song, and for good reason. It's awesome!

Living Colour....hadn't heard this one in years! I really liked it. Living Colour is an underrated rock band, imo.

Mars Red Sky......I really like this one! I've heard a song or two from them, can't remember if I've heard this one or not. I will be adding them to my fuzz list.

Wolfmother........I missed on these guys.....this is a great, rockin song!

Garbage.....always liked this band....I dig Shirley Manson's voice. I don't realize they were eligible.

Oh yeah, just a typo there (albeit a weird one).

I assumed it was ubiquitous for a few years, and was one of Daft Punks songs people knew. I heard it everywhere, and I barely leave the house. Lol.
I did not recognize the song by title. I fired it up, and about 30 seconds in, I recognized it as a song my wife and kids had played around the house...... before I came in, cranked some Megadeth, and blew up their little party!

I'm only being half serious........but this is definitely not my style of music.

Pip’s Invitation:

For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) - AC/DC (UK/Australia)
(new artist)

This is my second straight pick (and there will be more) of songs that made an impact on me when I was watching MTV as a tween in the early '80s. Maybe this period is conjuring up strong memories because my son is a tween now.

What MTV played was this live version, and as soon as I saw Angus Young's guitar work at the beginning, I was all  and remain so.

I remember that video well.

I could be totally off on this, but I recall some discussion that when a cannon explodes without any sound (right at the 5:33 mark), it signifies some sort of Satanic symbol. Or maybe that's just what I wanted to believe as a moody teenager.

Had no idea Mother Love Bone, Til Tuesday or LCD Soundsystem were eligible.

I don't know anything about Mother Love Bone so just let that one through.
They were part of the early Seattle grunge scene, but they didn't sound like anyone from that scene (or any other scene at the time). They had a lot of glam rock and ('70s) Aerosmith in their sound -- frontman Andrew Wood had some vocal and persona similarities to Steven Tyler. The band broke up after Wood died of a heroin overdose and two of the members went on to form Pearl Jam. (A third joined Love Battery, a band I've drafted in various other music threads. Don't know what happened to the French drummer.)

Wood had a pretty big personality apparently......Temple of the Dog was a tribute to him......one of the best albums ever created, imo.

Yep. His death affected everyone from that scene profoundly.

Modern Nature - Sondre Lerche (Norway)
(new artist)

My selection today, like yesterday's, is strongly connected to a time and place. Pip and I seem to have had a similar period of intense concert-going and music discovery, which he calls his "Lost Years" (for reasons that he needn't share!). Mine were my "Found Years," where I feel I grew the most creatively and figured myself out, all through the power of music and the luck of having incredibly talented friends around me.

Sondre Lerche's debut album, Faces Down, was released during my Found Years, and some friends invited me to go to his show at a small Chicago venue. Sondre had written the songs when he was 16-17 years old, recorded them when he was 17, and was 18 when he toured for it. In this intimate venue, we knew we were experiencing someone very special. The maturity of his songwriting at that age was incredible...I might even say better than some band that rhymes with Schmeatles, who were big influences on him along with his home-country band A-ha. He's gone on to a successful career working through a variety of genres, but I always come back to this sweet but mature album from a 17-year-old. I just looked him up, by the way, and see he's 40 now. Wtf. What does that make me?!

I chose "Modern Nature," which is more in the fashion of Paul's granny music, not just because it's charming but it allows me to get another female voice in my line-up, since I'm not very good at that. (But I do have three females in my top 10 this time, including one in the top three!) It's hard to choose just one of his songs, though, because I think the albums are better experienced as a whole. Probably my true favorite is "Dead Passengers," which I'm posting since no one else took his songs in this countdown.

So many tragic losses among the singers from that scene: Wood, Cobain, Staley, Cornell (and I may be missing others). It's a testament to Eddie Vedder that he was able to hold it together.

Mark Lanegan made it longer than he should have. Have you read his autobiography, Sing Backwards and Weep? It's pretty brutal......pretty cool insight into that era of you're into it though.

Right - Lanegan is another. I haven't read that, but sounds interesting - thanks for the heads up.

My top 5 from the 2 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. Pip’s Invitation: For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) - AC/DC
  2. Andy Dufresne: You're Going Down - Sick Puppies
  3. Zegras11: Message In A Bottle - The Police
  4. Mt. Man: The Night Owls - Little River Band
  5. MAC_32: Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
You're Going Down was in my first 5 out and just missed. Love that song.

I should probably get that book. To me it seemed like the Trees were as dysfunctional as the Who and the Kinks put together.

Housekeeping note: for ease of spreadsheetin', I'm conforming all artist and song names. If I've received multiple spellings - see, e.g., Derek & the Dominoes, Derek and the Dominoes, Derek & the Dominos, Derek and the Dominos, That Jerkface Clapton and Some Other Guys - then I check discogs and look at pictures of albums/singles to see what they say. Once I've chosen via that method, that's what we'll go with throughout the countdown. If you later think it should be changed, well...bummer.

For about five years, the Screaming Trees were my top band. I don't remember why or how, but I picked up a copy of the Uncle Anesthesia CD and played the ever loving #### out of it. Saw them live once at Sunken Gardens Theater in San Antonio in Sep '93, opening the show around 6:00 pm with a 100 degree sun beating down on them. Fantastic show, and the second act, Soul Asylum was just as good. We (me and the pregnant wife) skidaddled before the Spin Doctors could wash away the good vibe.

I saw em once at La Luna in Portland in '97. Josh Homme was with em at the time....it was the Dust your. Pretty awesome, but I would've loved to have seen em in the early 90's.

Uncle Anesthesia gets better with age, imo.
