Pip’s Invitation:

It Was There That I Saw You - ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (US/UK)
(new artist)

I was introduced to the Source Tags and Codes album shortly after it came out at an afterparty following a gig by my friends' band. The shifting dynamics of this song, the opening track, made me go  and I was like that all night. It remains perhaps their best example of punk/non-punk fusion. I've told tales in past threads of live Trail of Dead shows I've seen. They're completely nuts, usually in the good way.

The 16s playlist

I knew 22 songs from today, not counting my own but counting repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #16, not counting my own or Fight the Good Fight and Voodoo Child (Slight Return), which are known to be on my list:

Southern Cross -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (Andy)
Bloody Well Right -- Supertramp (Zegras11). My #1 of theirs.
Unchained -- Van Halen (Binky)
The Dead Heart -- Midnight Oil (Zamboni)
Twilight Zone -- Golden Earring (Doc Oc)
Back in Black -- AC/DC (DrIanMalcolm)
Hocus Pocus -- Focus (Titusbramble). How the hell did this become a hit? Excellent that it did, but...
Heaven -- Talking Heads (KarmaPolice). I can never listen to this song without thinking of a memorial concert I attended for Scott Byrne, who was a member of a Ween side project and died young of heart valve disease. During his set, singer-songwriter Chris Harford played this song, and everyone in the audience lost it.
I'm Waiting for the Man -- The Velvet Underground (Worrierking)
No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature -- The Guess Who (Mt. Man)
Buffalo Solider -- Bob Marley (Chaos34)

Went to Lexington, 425,
Feel sick and dirty more dead than alive

that's Lexington/125 ... as in 125th & Lex
You’re right. Going on memory

i hear ya - i know you're not from around these ways, so, i toss a pass.

Times Square may be the "Crossroads of the World", but 125th & Lex is the most notorious crossroad/section in the City, by far.

anybody who grew up here with a chequered past kinda resumé, and went on copping adventures, found themselves up that way at least once or twice (if not dozens 😁) ... smack dab in the heart of Harlem, it weren't exactly the area of "the Renaissance"

Hey white boy, whatcha doing uptown?

also the biggest station uptown - that 6 train used to be referred to as "White Lightning", and it weren't for all them Yankee fans heading up to 161st, if ya know what i mean (Lee Michaels sighting, FTW).

oh, pardon me sir ...

C'MON, LOU - DON'T BE SUCH A FEMALE CANINE!

💉

I'm Waiting For The Man - The Velvet Underground (US/Wales)
(new artist)

The topics that VU sang about in early 1967 were scandalous. A drug purchase was unthinkable. The production is primitive and it's all about Lou's guitar in this one.

spot on ... those COTdamn hippies didn't know whether to s*** or shine shoes when they were clunked over the head with that friggin' banana 🍌

don't wanna spotlight, 'cuz obviously there are more to come ... but - damn

shake 'em up, boys and girls🤘

Hocus Pocus -- Focus (Titusbramble). How the hell did this become a hit? Excellent that it did, but...
It’s a fair question. Thinking it had a big influence here just a few years later.

i always liked it better than "Frankenstein", and always preferred Johnny to Edgar.

quite a few Instrumentals hit big back in them days ... folks had chops.

(btw, quoting here not necessarily as a direct response to your post, but to avoid the f****** cluster of whittling pip's comment down on mobile).

No worries - just remember to have your pets spayed or neutered.

The instrumental portion isn't the commercial mystery. The yodeling is.

Geddy doesn't yodel -- but I'm not entirely sure how to label what he does.

In my household, us kids would sometimes play The Price Is Right with household items, groceries from the pantry**, etc.

I remember we made a home version of Cliffhanger with a bike propped upside-down and a little paper mountain climber taped to a bike-chain link. And we'd even sing the song: DOO-doo-doo-dee-DAAAAW! DOO-doo-doo-dee-DAAAAW!

** back then, most non-refrigerated groceries had little price tags on them.

I think I’ve posted before, but there’s an actual song from which Cliffhanger is derived.

I missed das boot in selecting it here.

🤣 at the bolded

The other song I would swap in for Rick Springfield is one originally done by Sammy Hagar - I've Done Everything For You. I'm always amazed the RS version sounds better than SH...but there it is.

I also dig Human Touch.

Love Rick's version of "I've Done Everything For You"!
Don't Talk to Strangers is my favorite of his.

That’s a good one - also partial to Love Is Alright Tonite.

I've been sooooo frikkin busy. Making my way through the 14-point playlist right now.

Meant to mention this morning that it was surprising to me that this was the first day with the Velvet Underground, though they were partially eligible in the US countdown, so that might be part of it.

Also, didn't have a chance to give this update:

kinda surprised at all the luv for Supertramp ... not that i wanna THUMP here, but - does beg the question of: if we weren't splitting members, and strictly considered them a UK band, would they have logged in so heavily amongst those heavyweights?

dunno ... think they're the one act benefitting the most from the hybrid passport bundle.

I don't think they would have done discernably different from Genesis, Yes, and such.

i did not participate in the prior two, so i'm not hep to the wisdom of the crowd jive ...

dunno, tho ... from my vantage point, both of them acts clock in as far superior.

carry on ...

(no spotlight)

Thrilled to see several positive new exposures to Tool. They're the best of what emerged from my generation.
Interesting. You think Tool is the best band of Gen X?
I think Tool changed the game. They are the anti-grunge....probably helped kill grunge, or at least made rock music morph into what was to come.....they are dark, progressive, and intelligent.
Well put.

I think Nirvana was the most impactful and had more to offer, but the depths to which they could have gone still pale in comparison. I don't like talking too much about Tool because I feel like it can comes off as pretencious, but the level of introspection I experience whenever I listen to them is just something I'll never have with any other music. That and they ****ing rock.

I don't think it violates Thumper to express surprise. But remember this is the bottom half of the countdown, so it's not like they're getting "top-choice" love at this point, and also that three of the picks so far have come from the same person. [Redacted maybe spoiler-y part.]

Yeah ... we were the last kids in the neighborhood in the metro area to get an Atari :kicksrock:

I took Take The Long Way Home at 27. I would have taken it also in the British Isles countdown if they were all UK people. I like Supertramp, but it is all about the song for me. I love it, and it has a significance to me.

You rang again 🐧

Made it through the 14-pointers. Lots of good stuff but not a lot that went onto my favorites. Good stuff included:

The Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix - probably my second favorite of his. Or third or fourth. Or it could be my favorite. He has so many greats to choose from.
Others already discussed including "Fight the Good Fight," "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five," "Cult of Personality," and "Insanely Jealous of You."

New-to-me good stuff:
'39 by Queen - this is a Queen song?!
Tattooed Love Boys by the Pretenders, Sunday Girl by Blondie, and (Nothing But) Flowers by Talking Heads - strong selections by bands I don't normally like all that much.
Incubus Succubus II by Xmal Deutschland - Stayed interesting and compelling throughout
Forget What I Said by Noora Noor - For some reason I can't tag again, but if you're reading this Uruk-Hai, you should check this one out.
Burden by Opeth - Enjoyed this more than the first one and will be curious to hear more if they happen to have been selected again.
Pleasant Valley Sunday by the Monkees - Monkee goodness!
Banjo Odyssey by The Dead South - they're batting 1.000
Purple Sneakers by You Am I - curious to hear more from them

It totally seems like something my brother and I would have done, and I can't believe we didn't.

We did, however, do our own home version of The Gong Show.
