Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

And for the record, I STILL hasn't picked a Rush song. Yet.
If you stuck to one song per artist, then I presume we won't see it for a while.
Actually, I told Krista earlier that I was going to base my number of Rush selections on a decision she made in a previous draft, so whatever happens - it's her fault.

The 9:30 Club is pretty legendary for DC music. They are opening up a new venue with space for just 450 attendees, and just released list of artists to see that seems pretty crazy for such a small venue, with tickets priced at just $44 (artists like Foo Fighters, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Joan Jett & The Blackhawks, Spoon, Billy Idol). Lottery system in place and only allowing ticket exchange to prevent resellers from taking advantage.

Can sign up for 11 artists. Feel like everyone’s going to go for the some of the more famous ones. Any of you music aficionados recommend someone from this list that might want to put in my lottery bid that may be a bit under the radar to increase the odds of seeing a great band in such a venue for pretty cheap?

I didn’t think it was the kind of album one would forget, but I guess that’s not the case for everyone…

One thing to consider is that while it might have been a singular and landmark achievement to some ears (and I remember it hailed that way), it was also part of a emo/post-hardcore movement that had similarities with other acts that came out a little before Source Tags and Codes. I'm thinking Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and others. If you were like me in CT, you'd probably be listening to the regional acts first and then sifting through the differences of the national acts.
I just came upon it at a party. I did not follow the emo/post-hardcore scene at all* and knew nothing of Trail of Dead or any of their contemporaries. This was my first exposure to any of it. I did seek out the first two TOD albums eventually but didn't like them as much, mainly due to the production. (The songs from them that I heard live came off very well in concert, though.)

* -- Ironically, some of the members of the band who I saw the night I was introduced to Source Tags went to high school with the members of Saves the Day.

I can definitely see where that would be the case. We were older for that scene. It was a younger brother/friend scene, and I had a couple because of a kid that grew up across the street from me. That's not how I came to know those bands -- I would generally introduce those bands to them or have heard of them a bit before -- but it helped cement them as bands of the time for me.

Aside from the big names you mentioned, I would go for:

Jeff Tweedy
The Walkmen
Clutch -- I have never seen them but I have some friends who swear by their live show
Living Colour -- Ironically I saw them at the 9:30 Club in the mid-00s
P-Funk -- They've always got talented musicians to marvel at even if George is having an "off" night
Gary Clark Jr.

I don't want to be this way forever
A dead letter marked "return to sender" -
Thursday, "Understanding In A Car Crash"

That was the first post-hardcore song I really got into and understood. It would have been in the American 31 for me, but I wanted to spare people the Hot Topic screamo ****, so I did. I personally love it, though, even though it's a little comical in retrospect.

I have not much to add other than this is very cool.

I'd second the Walkmen in an intimate space.

My Triumph selection today (Fight the Good Fight) in my opinion wins the award for "Song by a band not named Rush that sounds JUST like a Rush tune", right down to the lead singers accent being almost exactly like Geddy's. I do like Triumph on their own merits as well, but this was a great way to get another Rush song on my list without actually taking another Rush song.
Wish I knew so many were going with the great FTGF - I would have gone in a slightly different direction for them.

Thanks - Familiar with most of those, but not really familiar with The Walkmen and Clutch. Will give them a listen — have until Friday to make some decisions.

Clearly it's their Surrender. Which probably makes
Lay It on the Line
and
Magic Power
their I Want You to Want Me and Dream Police.

Just catching up so perhaps someone has pointed this out, but even if one were to assume a point total for Supertramp, or any other artist, there's no way to say that's how they would have scored in a prior draft, since...you know...the person selecting the particular artist might not have selected them in place of "x" artist in the prior draft. For instance, if there's someone who selected Queen six times here, that doesn't mean they would have replaced six of their other selections in UK with them; in fact it's nearly impossible to imagine they would.

Likewise, we don't know the final totals for some of those selected in prior drafts because some of their selections could be leeched off by the new artist, but we don't know which ones.

This is why I worded the total points question about Queen carefully.

Wow, that's a hell of a list. I'm not sure who qualifies as "under the radar" on it. Good luck, as this looks very cool!

ETA: I'd third The Walkmen.

Well - Maybe not under the radar, but anybody that may be more likely to only get 5,000 tickets requests instead of 50,000 or whatever, and increase my odds ever so slightly of getting 1/450. But, I’m pretty sure I’m putting in a request for the pride of Alexandria in Dave Grohl even if my odds are close to those of winning Powerball.

I thought today's playlist was good. Listening to three playlists in one day is not something I'd recommend, though. A little "new-to-me" fatigue. Special shout-outs to "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "In A Big Country," "I'm Waiting For The Man," and "Pressure Drop" as some known faves. New-to-me favorites included, but were not limited to, "Missed the Boat" by Modest Mouse, "Only God Knows" by Young Fathers, and "Bittersweet" by Hoodoo Gurus. I know of Hoodoo Gurus but don't think I've ever listened to a song of theirs before, so this was a nice find.

Listened to the 15-pointers. Was this the playlist Eephus was "meh" on? Had a similar reaction. Nothing I actively hated, but not my favorite of the playlists. Of the new-to-me songs, I liked "Ghost Town" from The Specials the best.

Eephus liked it. I thought it was less than meh.

Have a few song heavy-hitters coming up tomorrow, and an unexpected triple-up for a fella who has two solo selections and one with the band for which he's most well known.

I could put a comma in there and enhance the meaning.

Should be a fun day!

Oh, also three more double-up battles, including one for another artist that is making their countdown debut.

I was enthusiastic  about the playlist although the sunny day may have had something to do with it

That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain
(new artist)

@ditkaburgers' brother likes Country music much more than she does but this Shania tune is a little bit Country and a whole lot of Pop so it made db's list. She says it's her current karaoke pick.

Eephus:

Will The Wolf Survive? - Los Lobos
(new artist)

I love Los Lobos and had a tough time choosing a favorite song. It was a good excuse to listen to a lot of the band during the run up to this countdown. I finally went chalky with my song pick figuring someone else might pick it too which would help them in the standings. So silly.

Mrs. Eephus compels me to vote for X.

I'm not a huge fan of their musical Queen pastiches but The Struts are a really strong live act.

Haven't seen him live but Bartees Strange's last couple of albums have been among my AOTYs.

Dr. Octopus:

Twilight Zone - Golden Earring (Netherlands)
(duplicate, third vote)

titusbramble:

Hocus Pocus - Focus (Dutch)
(new artist)
Haven't heard this in forever.
landryshat:

99 Luftballons - Nena (Germany)
(duplicate, second vote)
Fave song on the music loop while I bartended at Houlihan's Long Beach in the early 80's . Killer voice.
jwb:

Lights Out - UFO
(new artist)
Jack Murphy Stadium with several similar bands with my SAE big sis.
simsarge:

Last Song - Edward (NOT the Cocaine) Bear (Other than Alone Again, Naturally and maybe Last Kiss, the saddest song ever (IMO))
(new artist)
Reminds me so much of Jr. High. LOL
Doug B:

In A Big Country - Big Country
(new artist)
SOlid choice here
zamboni:

The Dead Heart - Midnight Oil (Australia)
(new song)
One of my faves so far in this count down.

Top 7 faves from today.

Of the artists I’ve seen on that list, I’d recommend Walkmen, Hot Chip, Yo La Tengo, Tweedy and Spoon.

"Kill City Kills" is an all-time great disco-punk track, and one I'm really surprised to see here, even given otb's eclectic tastes. Just never would have expected to see it anywhere, really.

Love it. This is from memory, off-the-cuff, Hanoi English

Oh it was three years ago
I'm all alone I got some money don't know what to spend it on
So I take a bus, I see her face
Where did she go she was here just a moment ago
I got a love, a love so strange
And now my life must be rearranged
Went down to the subway
The nights never let me know what to do

ran across this Demo version which i think pops more than the Spotty link i provided K4.

early recording, supposedly circa '80, even though they didn't line it up proper as an album cut 'til a coupla yrs later.

drummer Gypsy Casino also on this version, so it even predates the legendary/late Razzle.

they have quite a few bangers in the catalog, but i always return to this one as their signature piece - love their ability to swing this the eff OUT, while keeping the melodic pace chugging along.

Is there a Hanoi comeback in the works? A re-release of Oriental Beat, remixed with a total new sound (I can attest to that as I've listened to it on Spotify), the physical release of which debuted at #1 on the Finnish charts. 500,000 plays for "Fallen Star," the ballad of the album because it was used in the series Peacemaker on HBO Max.

I smell a Hanoi revival.

I'm glad people picked up on "Kill City Kills." Nobody even sniffed at "Pretender" at #28, a song I thought encapsulated everything Hanoi did well, up to and including flaming guitar solos, saxophone riffs (sorry, krista4!), ethereal backing vocals, and rock and roll sloppiness with a time signature change and stomp about teenage youth running riot.

Well mommy and daddy think I am a fool
cause I told them I'd leave for you
Won't hear about no Pretenders anymore
There'll be a rockabilly teenage party on Saturday night
I'll find a new chick and I'll pull her all night
Well I don't care what the people might say
As long as I go wild all night
Pretender...such a sweet Pretender...the dirty things that we do
Just you and me

I never could figure out exactly where Pretender stood in this world, but it's okay, we can gloss over things such as that, right? Rock n' roll! Dudes and ladies!

a right Mott the Hoople feel to that one - think MM would love that compliment, as i'm sure he's had enough of the "G n' R meets the Dolls" kinda pap (yes, they preceeded Axl, but comparisions, ya know).

shoulda got more play.

Big fan. Seen them twice and it'd be a third if I wasn't busy in June.

I had a brain fart when putting together my UK list and left them of (included in the Last 5 Out, I guess). One of my favorites is this song only available on their European release of Everybody Wants

from the comments ... and pretty damn accurate:

'This is the Queen song they never made! Good job kids! Thanks for keeping rock alive!'

I think the song is total pop. I had a co-worker that loved the song and CD. If we went to lunch in his car, he would play this song and sing and dance to it. He was fun, and his enthusiasm for the tune made it grow on me. I like the memory the best, but I also like the song.
