I didn’t think it was the kind of album one would forget, but I guess that’s not the case for everyone…

One thing to consider is that while it might have been a singular and landmark achievement to some ears (and I remember it hailed that way), it was also part of a emo/post-hardcore movement that had similarities with other acts that came out a little before Source Tags and Codes. I'm thinking Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and others. If you were like me in CT, you'd probably be listening to the regional acts first and then sifting through the differences of the national acts.

I just came upon it at a party. I did not follow the emo/post-hardcore scene at all* and knew nothing of Trail of Dead or any of their contemporaries. This was my first exposure to any of it. I did seek out the first two TOD albums eventually but didn't like them as much, mainly due to the production. (The songs from them that I heard live came off very well in concert, though.)

* -- Ironically, some of the members of the band who I saw the night I was introduced to Source Tags went to high school with the members of Saves the Day.

"Hocus Pocus" by Focus...what in the holy hell am I listening to?! I'm not even saying I dislike it at all, but wtaf?

Now you see why I asked how in the hell it became a hit?

Suddenly it was 1971. Given the other weird crap the Beeb played, it was Mozart. And I liked it. It was way better than "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", which I loathed.

I can definitely see where that would be the case. We were older for that scene. It was a younger brother/friend scene, and I had a couple because of a kid that grew up across the street from me. That's not how I came to know those bands -- I would generally introduce those bands to them or have heard of them a bit before -- but it helped cement them as bands of the time for me.

That was the first post-hardcore song I really got into and understood. It would have been in the American 31 for me, but I wanted to spare people the Hot Topic screamo ****, so I did. I personally love it, though, even though it's a little comical in retrospect.

Just catching up so perhaps someone has pointed this out, but even if one were to assume a point total for Supertramp, or any other artist, there's no way to say that's how they would have scored in a prior draft, since...you know...the person selecting the particular artist might not have selected them in place of "x" artist in the prior draft. For instance, if there's someone who selected Queen six times here, that doesn't mean they would have replaced six of their other selections in UK with them; in fact it's nearly impossible to imagine they would.

Likewise, we don't know the final totals for some of those selected in prior drafts because some of their selections could be leeched off by the new artist, but we don't know which ones.

This is why I worded the total points question about Queen carefully.

Well - Maybe not under the radar, but anybody that may be more likely to only get 5,000 tickets requests instead of 50,000 or whatever, and increase my odds ever so slightly of getting 1/450. I thought today's playlist was good. Listening to three playlists in one day is not something I'd recommend, though. A little "new-to-me" fatigue. Special shout-outs to "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "In A Big Country," "I'm Waiting For The Man," and "Pressure Drop" as some known faves. New-to-me favorites included, but were not limited to, "Missed the Boat" by Modest Mouse, "Only God Knows" by Young Fathers, and "Bittersweet" by Hoodoo Gurus. I know of Hoodoo Gurus but don't think I've ever listened to a song of theirs before, so this was a nice find.

Nobody even sniffed at "Pretender" at #28, a song I thought encapsulated everything Hanoi did well, up to and including flaming guitar solos, saxophone riffs (sorry, krista4!), ethereal backing vocals, and rock and roll sloppiness with a time signature change and stomp about teenage youth running riot.

@ditkaburgers' brother likes Country music much more than she does but this Shania tune is a little bit Country and a whole lot of Pop so it made db's list. She says it's her current karaoke pick.

I think the song is total pop. I had a co-worker that loved the song and CD. If we went to lunch in his car, he would play this song and sing and dance to it. He was fun, and his enthusiasm for the tune made it grow on me. I like the memory the best, but I also like the song.
