Expecting To Fly - Buffalo Springfield (USA, Canada)
(new song)

Love this song. It's hard to call Buffalo Springfield underrated due to the star power of Young and Stills (and the others are no slouch), but at the same time, everything except "For What It's Worth" is prettymuch a deep cut.
Yep. All their singles except FWIW were flops, and their albums sold at “cult” as opposed to “popular” levels at the time. Though they did get lots of praise from other musicians and the music press.

OK so tomorrow is the last artist that I have upcoming which has not been used yet. It surprises me somewhat as I would have thought someone would have picked something off of them, but I guess not. At least up until now. Remaining top four of mine are all previously used bands and there's only one unused track
I wonder if one of my remaining (double) set of picks uses them. Country hint?
Germany

edit - if you mean the artist as opposed to the song title

I was putting together tomorrow's post and couldn't believe when I confirmed that your artist had not been previously selected.
Kinda obvious now. And i cant say anything further lol.

I'm glad the 26 pointer playlist was delayed today because it allowed me to catch up from yesterday. I wasn't able to spend much time with the 25 pointers because Lou had a vet appointment. The little guy came with a heart murmur and this was a follow-up visit with his cardiologist. The nearest canine heart specialist is in Oakland so we had to borrow my mother-in-law's car to get across the bridge. We gave our car to our son in New Mexico last year. Since we had wheels for a day, we ran a few other errands but I didn't want to mess up Grammy's bluetooth connection in order to play some tunes.

Lou's echocardiogram came back fine. The hole in his heart is the same size as it was two years ago and the vet said there's no need for future scans unless his condition changes. The traumas of separation and getting poked at were greater than the joy of riding in a car again so he's been very subdued since we got home. But we're relieved his heart is still in decent condition.
As a fellow owner of a dog with a cardiologist I wish you all the best. Surprised they wouldn’t have some specialized vets in SF, but at least it’s reachable across the Bridge.

Guess and not judgement: Maybe we hate them?

I mean, join the club....

I disagree

Eligible based on Mutt Lunge of South Africa handling backup vocals.

Dolby played the synth intro to "Waiting For A Girl Like You." from Foreigner.

 But actually not eligible. Solo artist rule; only Dolby counts. Was eligible, but not selected, in the British Isles countdown.

Dang all these rules.

...coming from the guy with The KLF logo avatar, I can see that. :lmao:

From the outset, the KLF adopted the philosophy espoused by esoteric novels The Illuminatus! Trilogy, making anarchic situationist manifestations, including the defacement of billboard adverts, the posting of cryptic advertisements in NME and the mainstream press, as well as unusual performances on Top of the Pops. In collaboration with Extreme Noise Terror at the BRIT Awards in February 1992, they fired machine gun blanks into the audience and dumped a dead sheep at the aftershow party. This performance pre-announced the KLF's departure from the music business and, in May of that year, they deleted their entire back-catalogue. Drummond and Cauty established the K Foundation and sought to subvert the art world, staging an alternative art award for the Worst Artist of the Year, and burning one million pounds sterling (approximately £2.35m as of 2022).

Maybe to early, but the Worldwide top songs crush the US songs IMO.

Would be kind of interesting after you wrap this up to put the top ten from US, UK, and Worldwide and have people submit a top ten from those thirty songs and artists.

I was thinking something like people who did all three submit the one favorite of their 3 31's, their 3 30's, and so on. Get a master list for everyone. Be some hard cuts as we got deeper... how do I pick between my 3 #10's, never mind #1's.

Then I realized Krista would say "great idea - have at it" and that's prettymuch where it dies. :)

Our old german short-haired pointer had a cardiologist as well. At one point, we had the following conversation:

Vet: What brand of food to you feed him?

Me: Buffalo Blue

Vet: Hmmm. A lot of my patients eat a similar kind of food.

Me: Really? Do you think it's the food that is causing the heart problems?

Vet: Could be. Or maybe it's just the same kind of people that take their dogs to cardiologists and pay $800 for EKGs are the same kind of people that buy $80 bags of dog food.

Enjoyed a lot of today's playlist!

Special shout-outs: Van Halen. I hadn't commented on any of the picks from them so far, but I like most of them even though I hadn't commented. VH were a big part of my childhood. I think today's selection of "Take Your Whiskey Home" is my favorite, though. Scritti Politti sighting! Their hit, "Perfect Way," is still a guilty pleasure. "Expecting to Fly" by Buffalo Springfield is outstanding.

New-to-me favorites: A lot of them, which belies my theory that mood plays a role, because work is awful and I hate life today.
- Previously mentioned, I liked "Children" by Robert Miles despite its not being my usual style.
- Dio. Bear with me for a minute, but I just want to comment that all of the Dio songs selected have been surprisingly not bad.
- "Stadium Love' by Metric and "Down to Zero" by Joan Armatrading both made my new-to-me favorites playlist but not quite the podium.
- Bronze Medal in event #26, Best New Song from April 14, 2023, goes to...wait, you know how in some events they don't have a bronze medal match but instead just give two bronzes, and the medal podium gets all awkward and crowded? This is one of those events! Bronze medals go to "Onsta La Yerbita" by Los Destellos and "Meet Me in the Woods" by Lord Huron.
- Silver Medal in event #26, Best New Song from April 14, 2023, goes to...wait, you know how sometimes there's just a tie? Like those famous instances we all* remember from 1998 and 2018 when there was a tie for first in the two-man bobsleigh and both teams got gold and they didn't award a silver? Well, the judges tell me that has happened here! Gold medals go to "Transcendent Ramblin' Railroad Blues" by Colter Wall and "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men. Cue the Canadian and Icelandic national anthems. What does the Icelandic national anthem sound like, by the way? Why here it is. Kinda dreary if you ask me.

*I did, in fact, not remember and had to look this up.

How about a We Are The World draft, where there are no boundaries?

Probably not in.

How about one where we just draft songs by artists who sang on that record? I can tell you one artist's catalog that would be safe from me sniping it.

You know you put up a good one when Krista special shouts out despite them having a female vocal.

I can't believe I forgot about David Hasselhoff.

Take Me Away - Fefe Dobson
(new artist)
I thought I wasn't going to get a post in today because I happened to pass by @ditkaburgers when she was on her way out for the evening before we'd had a chance to discuss her pick. I remembered she also drafted it for Genrepalooza. It was in March 2021 before she joined the forum but was just making my weekend picks for me. Here's what I wrote at the time

231.8 or 12 - Fefe Dobson - Take Me Away (PopRocks)

This one definitely leans toward the Pop side but it pushes enough Rock buttons to qualify.

One of the recurring themes of our Music of our Life draft was how the years between ten and fifteen were musically formative for many of us. This one came out when my daughter was eleven and she's mentioned how important and empowering it was for her at the time to see a teenage Black girl rocking out like this.

She's going to see Muse tonight in Oakland. We're seeing Dave Alvin in the city. Lou is going to be a sad pup.

Eephus:

Down To Zero - Joan Armatrading
(new song)

Joan Armatrading was another artist that I had trouble with picking a single favorite song. I picked "Never Is Too Late" for the Best Song Draft but that was because I wanted some Reggae in my mix.

"Down to Zero" is side 1 track 1 of her self-titled breakthrough album. It's probably the first song I ever heard from her back in the mid-70s and it's stayed with me since. The three late 70s album she made with producer Glyn Johns are all classics with a gorgeous recording quality that I've used for testing hi-fi equipment. Armatrading is still active today--she appeared with Little Simz at the Brit Awards a few months back--but I'm guilty of falling back to her early familiar stuff when I want to listen to her.

You know you put up a good one when Krista special shouts out despite them having a female vocal.

just looked yours up - yes!! I think this is my second shout-out to this band, but the first to take a "best of" award. I actually had two female vocalists on my medal stand today!

Actually gonna go start fixing dinner and will put this one on again, along with the other faves from today.

How excited is everyone that tomorrow starts our individual top 5s? Here's how excited I am: very.

Harissa shrimp is (are?) marinating. Here are a few previews for tomorrow, with not much thought put in because I'm brain dead.

- A Deja-Deja Vote! Yes, a song that previously had a Deja Vote will have another Deja Vote tomorrow.
- As with "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "The Weight," we'll get the original of a song previously covered by another artist in this countdown.
- OH and I will :boxing: with two different songs from the same artist. I seriously considered taking his, and it's definitely my second choice, so he's not that wrong with his selection.
- The first appearance of a new song that ends up with multiple votes in the countdown. Which late arrival is so beloved by more than one drafter?

Actually gonna go start fixing dinner
You live with a chef!

Who works all but two dinner times per week!
Chefs working during dinner time sounds about right.

Totally is. He's actually working as a fishmonger now instead of a chef, but the chef-y life is awful. The fishmonger with a union job does much better. In 12 days he's going on his first ever vacation where he gets paid while out! But he's currently on 11:30-8 pm schedule five days a week, which still sucks.

My #5 excites me so much that thinking about it makes me struggle with words. Not all the time, though. Call it 50/50.
3 of 5 left taken by someone. Two more I might own? We'll see. We're definitely in the area where these songs could've been #1 on a different day of ranking.

Not is you like watching sports, especially East Coast fans.

Don't mean to distract, but what is a fishmonger?

He did manage to get his schedule changed about a month ago to have Sunday/Monday off instead of Wed/Thurs, which will be good for watching football. I told his boss I wanted to hug him. Instead I bought his wife a plant.
Oh man, I partied HARRRRRRD in my Sunday/Moday day-off days.

Wed/Thurs sucked because my Friday was his Monday, and his Friday was my Tuesday. Yuck. Now that his schedule has changed, of course, all the good shows we want to go to seem to be on Thursdays! I guess it's OK since I'm banned from Ticketmaster anyway.
