Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (6 Viewers)

I have the following entries for the two contests. Please let me know if I missed yours! I should have farmed out these PMs, as keeping a tidy inbox between these and the actual countdown entries has been impossible. Please just bump our PM conversation if you're not listed and should be.

Still hoping for more entries! Remember that 1st AND 2nd place will get significant contributions to their charities due to the generosity of several of our brethren. :)

Did I win?

Congrats @Pip's Invitation - what a game!
Where did Pip go?
I'm right here! I had a busy day at work and then had to run a bunch of errands.
I thought he meant where did you go to school. I'm guessing Princeton.
Ah yes. Princeton. It came up in the GP4 thread but not everyone in this thread was in that one.

Pretty crazy.
NJ Basketball rankings:
1. Princeton
2. FDU*
3. Seton Hall
4. Rutgers

* my ex went to FDU and I picked Purdue to win the Tournament. That about sums up that relationship.

I remember this song from my childhood, but until I heard it recently on the Sirius 70s on 7 station, I had no idea it was by the guy from An American Werewolf in London: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F47AfASOnA8
I think it was from some TV Show.
Yep. Which I had no idea about until I went YouTube to find the song.

I guess ABC was desperate for a Saturday Night Fever knockoff/New Travolta.

In 2002, TV Guide ranked Makin' it at number 40 on its TV Guide's 50 Worst TV Shows of All Time list.

There were worse shows. 39 of them in fact.

It's hard to be more square than that. It's really bad. Anytime an AT40 comes up on SXM from 1979, I'm frightened this will get played.

Better than Billy Joel, though.

It always sounded to me like they were trying to recapture what Barry Manilow did on Copacabana.

Network TV was pretty horrid in the 20th century.

he's a Pepper

...they fired the poor guy after his werewolf movie role ...bastards.
I remember that commercial but I had no idea that was the Werewolf guy.

By the mid 80s he was reduced to appearing in teen sex comedies, as many actors under 30 did at the time.

I'm going to post the "last five out" list in a few minutes, and @Hawks64 has the playlist ready to go, but I wanted to go over a couple of reminders for the group, especially for newbies to these countdowns (@Raging weasel , @otb_lifer , @John Maddens Lunchbox , and @JMLs secret identity , I think?).

First and foremost, the reason that the first countdown was such a success, and the second a little less so but still great, is that the participants have gravitated naturally to The Thumper Rule, meaning generally that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. The idea of the threads is not to make fun of other people's picks but to share a love of music and to pick up some new favorites and revisit old ones. Sure, there will be exceptions based on ongoing board shtick, like Andy poking fun at Yankee's picks or Uruk's ongoing Billy Joel semi-shtick, but for the most part please keep the criticism to a minimum.

Second, please remember to avoid spoilers as much as possible, including "wink-wink, nudge-nudge"-type statements like "I bet we'll see this song again later...a lot later." It's absolutely encouraged to talk about songs that might come up later on your list, but just without saying that they will be there.

These are just guidelines and suggestions based on what we saw in the prior threads that worked and what didn't. I won't be an enforcer of rules of discourse, so the thread will be whatever you all want to make it. :)

This makes "Copacabana" sound like "I've Been Loving You Too Long". It is the whitest record ever made.

OK, let's get going!! :excited:

I promise that the daily posts will be in lovely formatting as always, but I don't have time to do any of that with the Last Five Out. Enjoy!

Looking at my last five out, I realized I like #32-35 better than stuff that made my list. But I put a hard stop on changes by me once we hit 19 lists, and that's where it stood. :kicksrock:

The Chicano Batman song came from a thread here - either a Genrepalooza or shuke's mega-thread, so thank you to whoever turned me on to that one.

I award myself a bonus selection for doing all this work. Of all the artists on my top 31, the Bee Gees were the most difficult from whom to choose one song. I wanted to highlight their incredible harmonies, but I also wanted to give a nod to Robin as the most underappreciated and talented of the brothers. I will have another song of theirs on my official list, but my bonus song, more than any other IMO, shows Robin's immense talent. I love to watch this live version from 1969, when he would have been 19 and looks as awkward and goofy as most teenage boys do. Poor kid...in that video he is such the ugly duckling, particularly compared to the always-dreamy Barry, regular guy Maurice, and the Aussie drummer who's just happy to be there. But Robin KILLS it on the performance. For the playlist, I asked Hawks to include a truly stunning live performance of the song from 1997. His voice was always vulnerable but angelic. Gives me chills.

LAST FIVE OUT (PART TWO):

The Dreaded Marco:

Someone Great - LCD Soundsystem
Debaser - Pixies
Poses - Rufus Wainwright
Soon - My Bloody Valentine
Blood And Roses - The Smithereens
When I realized that all 5 of these previously ineligible songs were going to be in the upper half of my list, 3 in the top 5, I decided to make them my last 5 out. I left a few of the ineligibles in my top 31 but they are widely dispersed throughout the list and the large majority of the songs are from eligible "world" nations.

I have basketball on, and as I was typing one of my prior posts I heard someone say, "He was born in the Canary Islands, part of Spain," and I instinctively jerked my head up to see if it was someone whom I should choose for the countdown.
Those Pitt twins are built like guitar strings.

you should get more than 1 @krista4 ...for real

I am hoping that with the early Bee Gees stuff being eligible - that some people dug into their stuff and discovered just how good (and different) they were than the disco "Night Fever" stuff with which they are typically identified.

and when people do know there earlier stuff - they think of the great harmonies and the more maudlin songs that dominated their earlier hits - that was still fantastic. They did some other stuff that pulled from other influential bands of the time - Cream, The Moody Blues, The Beatles - it's a completely different sound.

I completely forgot the Scorpions existed. Whoops, too late now
Looking at some of the last five out, I clearly didn’t do enough research on this one and missed some artists I might have taken.

I had to restrain myself from including some I'd forgotten until I saw the lists. Didn't feel right that I'd have the advantage of seeing the other lists. But it was tempting with a few that will come up that would have made my top 31 if I'd thought of them.

Why wasn't Rufus eligible for the US draft since he was born in NY?

Discussed along the way in this thread. I mistakenly thought he was born in Canada so ruled him out. I guess we could have made him eligible here due to the mistake, but I didn't, which was my second Rufus-related mistake.
