That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain
(new artist)

@ditkaburgers' brother likes Country music much more than she does but this Shania tune is a little bit Country and a whole lot of Pop so it made db's list. She says it's her current karaoke pick.
I think the song is total pop. I had a co-worker that loved the song and CD. If we went to lunch in his car, he would play this song and sing and dance to it. He was fun, and his enthusiasm for the tune made it grow on me. I like the memory the best, but I also like the song.
There was a funny and memorable SNL skit made around this song in the Wiig-Poehler-Fey days, but I can't find it on YouTube. Maybe a song rights issue?

The 9:30 Club is pretty legendary for DC music. They are opening up a new venue with space for just 450 attendees, and just released list of artists to see that seems pretty crazy for such a small venue, with tickets priced at just $44 (artists like Foo Fighters, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Joan Jett & The Blackhawks, Spoon, Billy Idol). Lottery system in place and only allowing ticket exchange to prevent resellers from taking advantage.

Can sign up for 11 artists. Feel like everyone’s going to go for the some of the more famous ones. Any of you music aficionados recommend someone from this list that might want to put in my lottery bid that may be a bit under the radar to increase the odds of seeing a great band in such a venue for pretty cheap?

I didn't realize that Luna had gotten back together. I almost picked one of their songs for this countdown. If you aren't familiar with their music, they were very influenced by The Velvet Underground. Dean Wareham of Luna used to be the frontman for Galaxie 500. If you like Indie Folk, The Head and The Heart are very good live. One more person not mentioned yet that might not fill up fast is Iron and Wine. He is folkie. Sometimes he is with a band, and sometimes he is by himself. He lives in Durham, so he plays around NC a lot. He's very good if you enjoy folk.

I forgot to add that the 44 list is great.

Joan Jett & The Blackhawks,

@Hawks64 , you in with me for this one?
I love Rocky Wirtz…
You might be the only one these days :sadbanana:
Did at first getting Kane, but he hasn’t been great for the Rangers.
10 points in 16 games, and the Rangers are 7-2-1 in their last 10 so something's working
Kane has been ok, but the Kid Line and Igor have really been carrying them.

I knew next to nothing from today.

But I've really liked More and Temple Of Love for a while.

As to my attention selection - Vernon Reid should get more love in "great guitarist" conversations. And it's a great song for a live performance.

Turn Me Loose - Loverboy (OMG The Bass Line! Since a certain coke bottle ( I'll explain later ) couldn't accompany me to the far east, i was left instrument-less until my dj buddy spun this little diddy. After much practice and many oscars, this song helped me become the Neal Peart of air drums.)
I missed that this song has been thrice selected so far -- great pull, simsarge! That bass line is the right kind of Thumper Rule: Thump the ever-lovin' funk on that bass 🎸 Dude just drops that pounding deep note down a mine shaft.

Another great driving song, BTW.

would be remiss if i didn't shout out @simsarge, and the awesome "Last Song" from Ed Bear ❤️

we had a great junior (14-18) street hockey squad - perennial top record, but always choking in the playoffs - was 4 straight years of heartache

by the time our last eligible szn rolled around, we were a friggin' machine ... 14-0, beat every team twice, including double pastings of our downtown rival, the Killer Kings.

a few of us decided to stay down for that szn, even tho we were eligible to move up to our senior 'hood team, which had already bagged a few 'chips - i turned 18 barely a week after the szn started, causing agita for quite a few of our rivals.

we swept the first playoff (best of 3) series 2-0, then had the Killer Kings lined up for best of 5 'chip series - yes!

we took the first two games convincingly, then choked back the next two, both in overtime. because of course we did. them KKs had some fast kids, but we were always the rougher bunch, and we kinda dented a few bodies while taking our losses.

the afternoon of game 5 was punctuated by torrential rains .... faceoff was at 6 p.m. sharp, and by 4 that afternoon the rains were still pounding - about a half dozen of us met at the captain's building, and held court down the basement, which his family had the run of, as his father were the Super.

so we got a ton of beers, and got absolutely shftaced - and our cap started playing some schmaltzy 45s, including the theme from "Brian's Song" about 10 straight times ... then he dropped "Last Song" immediately after, and started screaming at our goalie TO LISTEN TO THE F*****G WORDS!

cap was not only yuuuge for 18, but just plain yuuuuge - easy 6'1", 225ish at that time, and solid - not fat ... our goalie were a littler fella, nowhere near that kinda size ... so drunken cap had enough of yelling, and physically carried the goalie over tto the record player ... and again admonished him to LISTEN!

then drunken cap slammed him, hurting his shoulder - they were cousins, so there were some farkakte family dynamic going on we had no clue about ... we were all so bombed anyways ... last thing i recall was "Last Song" being stuck as a result, and hearing "and still the light is on" over and over and over.

thank god the game got rained out, ya know?

WRONG.

cap's mother screams down the hallway that Harry from the hockey league were on the phone ... seems that the KKs were up at the "rink" squeegeeing they arses off, and we were to do likewise, as game was ON for 6:30.

we could barely walk ... and once we showed up they knew we were drunk, and had no goalie ... they petitioned Harry & co to award them a forefit ... no dice.

the game were barely 5 minutes old before we were down 4-0, so we just started knocking the living ish outta them - it got ugly, even their cheering section of girls from downtown, who always fancied us, began tossing s*** at us, spitting, etc

it was 7-0 when they called the game off, and a damn mini riot broke out, as word got out to our 'hood that somehing were brewing up there.

another choke job.

THANKS, ED!!!!

What I said in my Neil countdown (some of you aren't going to like it):

111. Sugar Mountain (Decade, 1977; B-side of "The Loner," 1969, and subsequently other singles; written in 1965)

Arguably the most famous Neil song that didn't make the top 101, I like this well enough but it seems a bit trite compared to his other iconic acoustic material. I mean, it's about being too old to go to an under-20 club. Hey, he wrote over 600 songs, 111 is still a damn good ranking.

Don Quixote:

Zombie - Fela Kuti (Nigeria)
(new song)

I also gave this song as an assist to JML for 1977 Part II thread. Thought I’d re-post what I posted there…

I suppose I’ll let the Wikipedia page for the song tell the story. The song itself is great with some great brass and strong Afrobeat, but I can’t think of another song with the power to bring the wrath of the country’s military quite like it, which, in this case, caused the unfortunate death of Kuti’s mother.

The album was a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers using the zombie metaphor to describe the methods of the Nigerian military. The album was a smash hit with the people and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic (a commune that Kuti had established in Nigeria), during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Kuti was severely beaten, and his elderly mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries. The Kalakuta Republic was burned, and Kuti's studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed. Kuti claimed that he would have been killed if it were not for the intervention of a commanding officer as he was being beaten. Kuti's response to the attack was to deliver his mother's coffin to the main army barrack in Lagos and write two songs, "Coffin for Head of State" and "Unknown Soldier", referencing the official inquiry that claimed the commune had been destroyed by an unknown soldier.

I’m going to predict that today’s list includes, for the first time, the song that will be #1 when this is all done.
The song that @DrIanMalcolm told me that he thinks will be #1 is here today. Will be interesting to see if his prediction is the same as yours.
I’m not sure he’ll ultimately be correct but, to me, it’s obvious which song Tim is referring to based on this list.

There's four wide-appeal chalky** songs on today's list that should do really well. Not a bad bet.

This is all interesting to me. As I mentioned last night, there are some heavy hitters on today's list, but I wouldn't have thought any of them to be "obvious" #1s or anything. I think it's fine if you guys want to discuss your guesses here rather than pussyfootin' around it, though. Up to you. Or if you want to share your guesses by PM, I'd be interested in seeing them. (I won't give anything away, of course.)

LOVE seeing "Wind of Change" up on here ... love it more that i now know the lyrics: "i followed the Moskva, down to Gorky Park"
In the pre-interweb days without the ability to look up lyrics, I had no clue that he was saying “Moskva.” Klaus had a unique Germanglish accent.

Moskva being the Moscow River to us greenhorns - anyways, very powerful imagery, and such a timeless piece.

also ....

RISE - "ANGER IS AN N R G!"

thanks, K4

I was back-and-forth a lot between "Rise" and "Public Image," so I was happy to see the other got taken as well. I settled on "Rise" in part because it was longer, and the more the better for me on their stuff.

I’m not sure Tim will be right but my guess is he’s referring to The Weight.
That would be my guess as well but never occurred to me it might be the one.

including the theme from "Brian's Song" about 10 straight times

This whole story was A+++++, but I actually laughed out loud at this part.

it were the Peter Nero instrumental, pretty sure - i think a Michel Legarand (sp?) also had a version.

Cap was a big softee ... oh, yes, "Seasons in the Sun" & "Abraham, Martin, and John" anyone?

he became NYPD, his bro FDNY.

was just thankful it weren't the Andy Williams vocal take ("The Hands Of Time"), which the world's biggest Andy Williams fan, my mom, always enjoyed repeatedly after poppin' her mother's little helper.

Frikkin' Killer Kings.

it were actually KilleN Kings, named after the sponsor, Killen being an old school Irish name very popular in our 'hood.

all our team jerseys had the iron on names & numbers, and the kids on KK actually cut the N in thirds, and substituted the R instead, in marker ... those KilleR King bastids 🏴‍☠️

I’m going to predict that today’s list includes, for the first time, the song that will be #1 when this is all done.

The song that @DrIanMalcolm told me that he thinks will be #1 is here today. Will be interesting to see if his prediction is the same as yours.

pretty heavy prognostication - that being said, i hope not

There's four wide-appeal chalky** songs on today's list that should do really well. Not a bad bet.

** not meant as a pejorative

I’m not sure he’ll ultimately be correct but, to me, it’s obvious which song Tim is referring to based on this list.

This is all interesting to me. As I mentioned last night, there are some heavy hitters on today's list, but I wouldn't have thought any of them to be "obvious" #1s or anything. I think it's fine if you guys want to discuss your guesses here rather than pussyfootin' around it, though. Up to you. Or if you want to share your guesses by PM, I'd be interested in seeing them. yes, that's why i said "heavy" prognostication ...

😅

LOVE seeing "Wind of Change" up on here ... love it more that i now know the lyrics: "i followed the Moskva, down to Gorky Park"
In the pre-interweb days without the ability to look up lyrics, I had no clue that he was saying “Moskva.” Klaus had a unique Germanglish accent.

yep, samesies on that ... when he sings that in the opening of the vid, with the Soviet soldiers goose stepping, man ... that hits different.

and totally new complexion once i learnt the lyric proper.

Right along with lyric “walking down the street”. Heavy stuff

John Maddens Lunchbox:

Mr X - Ultravox (Canada)
(new artist)
Great song from the 2nd era of the band. In case anyone wonders who Mr X is, I found this theory:

"Though Warren Cann later denied this, I first thought this song was vaguely about John Foxx: Foxx was born in the forties, sang lyrics about cars and planes; and most of all he, was an ex-Ultravox member/frontman, so it could've been a pun: Mr: X = mr. EX = John Foxx"

Looking at the list, I'd say he is referring to that or All Along the Watchtower.

DARKHORSE -

Band on the Run, Cali Dreaming

if the overall #1 were, indeed, in today's playlist, i'd go with these odds:

Weight 6-5
Watchtower 9-5
BoTR 25-1
Cali 40-1

pm for wagering

TIA

I always thought he said, "I followed the Muskwa, down to Donkey Park." I never saw the video or knew the real lyrics, and now everything makes sense.
