Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

I noticed that I seemed to own a lot more of my songs this time, so I counted them up. I originally owned 23 of them! Huge number. Yuge.

[Two songs yet to be revealed]

When Your Mind’s Made Up – Glen Hansard and Market Irglova

California Stars – Billy Bragg and Wilco

Take On Me – a-ha

How Can You Mend a Broken Heart – Bee Gees

Overkill – Colin Hay

Purple Haze – The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Rise – Public Image Ltd

Hope There’s Someone – Antony and the Johnsons (but I quitclaimed this one over to The Dreaded Marco)

Spring Rain – The Go-Betweens

Where Does The Time Go? – The Bamboos (feat. Aloe Blacc)

Where Is My Mind? – The Pixies

I Got You – Split Enz

Strange – Galaxie 500

Kansas City – The New Basement Tapes

I Wanna Destroy You – The Soft Boys

Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen

Modern Nature – Sondre Lerche

Taj Mahal - Jorge Ben Jor (Brazil)
(new song)

Love Ben Jor’s catalog. His music evolved with the times. Started off his career with the samba standard “Mas, Que Nada” (popularized by Sergio Mendes) in the mid-1960s, then moved onto samba rock in late 1960s. Both eephus and I picked songs off his Africa Brasil album, which is funkier than most of his stuff.

This song is probably most recognizable in the US for having its melody ripped by Rod Stewart for “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.” Stewart did own up to it a bit after he was sued, and settled with Ben Jor (ETA: Stewart agreed to donate royalties to UNICEF). If you are going to rip a melody though, it’s a good one to rip.

I knew 22 songs from today's list, not counting my own but counting repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #5, not including my own pick or Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Band on the Run, which are known to be on my list:

Rockin' in the Free World -- Neil Young (MAC 32)
Welcome to the Jungle -- Guns N' Roses (Just Win Baby)
The Weight -- The Band (Rockaction)
This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) -- Talking Heads (Shuke)
Cult of Personality -- Living Colour (DrIanMalcolm and Sullie)
Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen -- Santana (Raging Weasel)
Go Your Own Way -- Fleetwood Mac (AAABatteries)
Remedy -- The Black Crowes (Hov34)
Rhiannon -- Fleetwood Mac (Simsarge)
Can't Find My Way Home -- Blind Faith (Binky)
Handle With Care -- The Traveling Wilburys (Worrierking)
NYC -- Interpol (John Maddens Lunchbox). "The subway is a porno / The pavements they are a mess / I know you've supported me for a long time / Somehow I'm not impressed / But New York cares." Those lines stuck with me a lot in the early '00s.
Xanadu -- Rush (Scorchy). Glad to see that Scorchy has recovered from his Rush overdose all those years ago.
Let Me Roll It -- Wings (OH). I have seen Ween cover this!
School -- Supertramp (Zegras11)

Speaking of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, I have introduced my son to The Monkees (AXS TV has started airing old episodes). Today when we were watching, I mentioned that Stephen Stills tried out for the Monkees and was rejected because of bad teeth. If his teeth were better and he were cast, we probably never would have gotten SJBE or his other greatest moments.

Here's an indicator of whose tastes might be most similar to mine so far. I'll do this when we get to a number that ends in 0 or 5.

The "similarity scores" are definitely starting to be affected by who picked Neil songs.

The second list seems particularly interesting.

Hey, anybody wanna talk about "The Weight" by The Band?

Groovy song?

What's your favorite verse?

Mine's the one where Annie takes her load off. Oh, that's the chorus? Hot damn! I like the part about Nazareth, then. Very Christ-invoking.

Take a load off Annie
Take it off for free
Take a load off Annie
And then you put the load right on me...

What?

What?

New-to-me favorites from #6:

Pissing in a River -- Patti Smith Group (Worrierking). Stunning vocal and arrangement.
Onstá la Yerbita -- Los Destellos (Mister CIA). Basically the same stuff as early Santana (with rougher production), which I could listen to all day.
Take Me Away -- Fefe Dobson (Ditkaburgers). Fantastic pop tune.
Meet Me in the Woods -- Lord Huron (KarmaPolice). A bunch of their stuff was taken in GP4, so I may have heard this but I don't remember. Evocative and well-constructed.

Twenty-Four-Point Selections:
Hawks64:

4-No Woman, No Cry (Live at The Lyceum, London 1975) - Bob Marley
(duplicate, second vote)

4 - I actually prefer this version to the one i just chose. Didnt think to look for live versions of songs i chose.
This is the version that most of us Americans are most familiar with, because it's the version that appears on the Legend greatest hits album, which has been played at pretty much every college party since the early '80s.

I just don't get it. This song just seems average to me. I guess I'm the only one.

I agree, but learnt long ago that my musical tastes are different than others.
If people feel the way about this song as I do about Dreams by the Cranberries, then thats awesome.

KarmaPolice: Meet Me In The Woods - Lord Huron

Nice to see them picked @KarmaPolice. My wife's favorite band, so I've seen them 7 times in 4 different states.
Strange Trails is one of my favorite albums of the last decade or so. To be clear, the other songs on the album were for the US countdown, but this is my favorite song and had to hold off until this one because of the backing vocalist on the track. My wife and I have seen them 3-4 times as well.

Okay. Today's workday was less terrible than the previous two. So while I'm listening to today's list (about to keep on rocking in the free world), I figured I'd throw in small bits about my selections. Mostly because I can.

#7: Still Loving You. Welcome to 6+ minute songs where the title doesn’t drop until about 4:45 in! Honestly, this song always hooks me early, and then builds up along the way. In the vein of “She’s so popular” though, I’d be curious what people might first heard as the refrain that ends most of the (early) quatrains. Plausibly not “I will be there”.

#6: Panama. Reach down between my legs and… ease the seat back. Because that’s definitely where your mind was going. Energetic and high-tempo enough for the band to be ‘flying’ around the whole time. And that’s talking about both the song itself and its video.

#5 Lateralus. Black/then/white are/all I see/in my infancy/red and yellow then came to be/reaching out to me/help me see. I’m willing to go out on a limb that Lateralus is my favorite song whose lyrics follow a Fibonacci sequence (-like) form. No, but really, this might have been the first song I wrote down for this list, and had a good chance as any song to be my #1. It just wasn't’. Anyway, I also really enjoy the (not surprisingly instrumental Vitamin String Quartet version of this. Check that out as you will.

The beginning of the second section was my favorite part, because it's exactly what I'd do when I see a band name I recognize.
I literally did this yesterday when my son sent me a link to Green Day playing in a festival 10/23 in Vegas. There was nothing else I recognized. :lmao:

Yikes, I've only seen four of mine live.

Wings – Band on the Run (by Paul)

When Your Mind’s Made Up – Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (by Glen)

Modern Nature – Sondre Lerche (by him)

Wake Up – Arcade Fire (by them)

Edit: Wait, five. One more still to be revealed.

I’ve seen 0 of my 31 live.

Same here, 0 of 31. Actually, I'm zero for everybody's list. I went from "living in rural hicksville" to "poor college student" to "most of the bands I like don't make music anymore" to "I wish I was healthy enough to be able to walk into a concert venue and enjoy myself", and really never had the opportunity. The only one that really disappoints me is Mrs. R tried to convince me to go to my very last chance to see Rush live when they were doing their farewell R40 tour. I ended up chickening out for various reasons (paying for a pricy seat, not knowing if I was physically up to it, having to go solo...), and I still berate myself for not finding a way. ANY way. Especially after Neil Peart died.

I'm 0 for 31 on the live thing.

Wow. That's bad. I should have at least seen ****ed Up and PUP and Daft Punk one time. I really regret not being into Daft enough to where I would want to see a show. That's probably my biggest regret of the countdown.

I am sure mine is 0/31 as well. I went to a lot of punk and ska shows as a teen but that's not really music I consider my favorite now. After that, I wasn't a big concert guy. I love music but find concerts to sometimes be a hassle or just not my scene.

Wait, five. One of my top four that I didn't list.

Also have seen both Billy Bragg and Wilco live, but neither of them played "California Stars," so I didn't include that.

shuke:

This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads …...........David Byrne from Scotland, rest of band American
(duplicate, third vote)

About my pick today. This didn't used to be my favorite Talking Heads tune, but it has become that over the years, primarily for the feelings it invokes. It was the last song played by Cincinnati's decades-old independent radio station, WNKU, but it was bought out and turned into a religious station.

Here's a clip of the sign off, song intro starts about 4:40. I remember exactly where I was when I was listening to this, driving my daughter to softball practice. I teared up because it felt like a loss of a community.

Today's playlist special shout-out: "Stumblin' In." Hell yeah! This would qualify in Mt. Man's "dig the vibe" category. Also, "School" by Supertramp was my favorite by them thus far.

New-to-me favorites:
"Taj Mahal" by Jorge Ben Jor - Don't remember if I shouted out the first selection by him, but enjoyed them both.
"The Stairs" by INXS - Don't remember this one. Loved it.
"NYC" by Interpol - I listened to a bit of them backinnaday (did I do that right, Dale?), but I don't remember this one. Special.
"Tiago" by Kendji Girac - Niiiiiice.

Twenty-Seven-Point Selections:

westerberg:

Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - Arcade Fire
(duplicate, second vote)
This was my 26 pointer from yesterday. Such a great song. The first song on their first album—-still my favorite.

But sometimes, we remember our bedrooms
And our parents' bedrooms
And the bedrooms of our friends
Then we think of our parents
Well what ever happened to them?

When I heard this song for the first time this lyric hit home for me and still does.
I went back and forth on which one to take. They have a handful of songs that I had a hard time choosing between.

Btw, this has happened a few rounds in row: y’all keep taking the song I chose a round before me. 😆

Okay, I covered my selection today elsewhere. So let’s take a look at what others had. It was a tough day of choices. I mean, that’s kind of always, but it still feels like the cuts are getting more difficult as we get closer to the end.

#5s
Recognized by title alone: 20
Sounded familiar: 4
Knew from this countdown: 5
Didn't know: 13

Selected Favorites:
Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen (Raging Weasel)
Black Betty (Val Rannous)
Chandelier (otb_lifer)
Can’t Find My Way Back Home (Binky) - Oh, wow. Severe flashback here!
Remedy (Hov34)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Dr. Ford (Andy Dufresne) - Westworld is on my list to catch up on… eventually.
Cincinnati (Mister CIA)
NYC (John Madden’s Lunchbox)
Chase (Doug B)
Many Rivers To Cross (Chaos34)

Dig The Vibe: Tiago (ditkaburgers)

Here's a clip of the sign off, song intro starts about 4:40. I remember exactly where I was when I was listening to this, driving my daughter to softball practice. I teared up because it felt like a loss of a community.

Cool story, bro.

I'm totally kidding. That was moving. There's something truly sad about independently-run radio stations going off the air because of viewership and demographic concerns. It is a community, for sure, and the more of these that we lose, the worse off we are. But we can celebrate when they were and the memories they left! At least we have that; those moments in brief, unappreciated at the time yet lasting for longer than we ever imagined.

I can still remember going to Central Connecticut State University and guesting on my friend Dan's brother's radio show. I picked up ****ed Up (whoa, that keeps coming up. this was back in 2007) and introduced Dan and others to their music. They loved it (quelle surprise!), but I remember the conversation with staff and others to this day.

There's something magical about being over the air to a community of people who love music even if the particular music isn't loved by everyone. It's interesting.

ditkaburgers:

Tiago - Kendji Girac
(new artist)

Another French song for @ditkaburgers with two more yet to come. Girac is a TV singing show winner (in France obviously). She discovered him via the "Top 50 France" playlist on Spotify which tends to be pretty hit or miss for her but every now and then she finds something that's special enough to go into the bi-monthly repeat playlist.

Via text: I love the catchy guitar riff and the Spanish and French lyrics. Kenji Girac is most likely the "Ed Sheeran" of France so I think it's pretty fair that I only like a handful of his songs. The rest are pretty forgettable.

Eephus:

Spring Rain - The Go-Betweens
(duplicate, third vote; song owned by me! ME!)

It's lovely to see The Go-Betweens' stuff (band and solo) doing well in this countdown. Not a lot of people liked the band when they were around but they're one of those bands where it seems that everyone who like them really love them.

I picked "Spring Rain" because I'd already selected one of Grant's solo songs so I wanted a Go-Betweens song where Robert sings. If I would have picked one of Grant's it probably would have been "Cattle and Cane" but it could have been several others. It's too bad that the band's full catalog isn't available for streaming--the beginning and end of their career is pretty spotty on Spotify although thankfully their three best known albums are.

We never saw The Go-Betweens but we did see Grant and Robert play as an acoustic duo. It was in 1999 right before they started recording again as The Go-Betweens. Unfortunately their duo tour was before the days of ubiquitous cameras so the only documents I could find were two songs on video, an interview and a session for German radio. They played "Spring Rain" on the latter.

Updated Song standings. This is a more interesting race. Golden Earring might not have the legs to finish the race though...
