Xanadu -- Rush (Scorchy). Glad to see that Scorchy has recovered from his Rush overdose all those years ago

I was in third grade when I bought the Tom Sawyer 45 in an attempt to look cool to an older kid at my bus stop who kept talking about it. I don't think I heard another Rush song all the way through junior high (after all, they weren't played on Top 40 radio, the roller rink, or local skateboard ramps). In the summer before high school, a good friend who was a percussion savant went away to some fancy band camp and mailed me a dub of A Farewell to Kings. The first album I hear from a band tends to always stay my favorite, and Rush is no exception. Even through my Rush-avoidance decades, that album always kept a place in my rotation.

It is, missed it though. Added and should be good.

Hey, anybody wanna talk about "The Weight" by The Band?

Groovy song?

What's your favorite verse?

Mine's the one where Annie takes her load off. Oh, that's the chorus? Hot damn! I like the part about Nazareth, then. Very Christ-invoking.

Take a load off Annie
Take it off for free
Take a load off Annie
And then you put the load right on me...

What?

What?
We also need to discuss what the best version of this song is. My top 3 in no particular order:

1. The original recorded version from The Big Pink.

2. The live version from The Last Waltz, which features The Staple Singers.

3. The Playing For Change version, starring Robbie Robertson, Ringo Starr and a large group of international artists.

I love all 3 versions and can’t choose between them.

I meant to comment about @otb_lifer and his Sia pick, but got called away for a minute.

I thought I would have a Sia song ranked highest by far here. I done got outdone. Great song. Big Sia fan. What an interesting artist.

I still prefer "Titanium"

If this be modern dance music, give me more.

it's a friggin' powerhouse ... the music itself are so melodic and infectious ... chaotic in all that, to boot - the way it explodes into that frantic/manic chorus - jaw dropping to me, i tell ya.

when i took a deeper dive into the lyrics, tho ... WHOA! it put it on a whole other level for me - elevates it to perfection, it's a gut punch, as brutally desperate in it's honesty as i've heard - she lets a TON out here ... so beautifully anguished:

Vid

Party girls don't get hurt
Can't feel anything, when will I learn?
I push it down, I push it down
I'm the one for a "good time call"
Phone's blowin' up, ringin' my doorbell
I feel the love, feel the love
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
Throw 'em back 'til I lose count
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier
From the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night
Feel my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier
From the chandelier
But I'm holding on for dear life
Won't look down, won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light
'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight
Help me, I'm holding on for dear life
Won't look down, won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light
'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight
On for tonight

Sun is up, I'm a mess
Gotta get out now, gotta run from this
Here comes the shame, here comes the shame (ah)
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
One, two, three, one, two, three, drink
Throw 'em back 'til I lose count
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier
From the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist

ETA: i bolded for emphasis on that passage. hits me very hard.

Four Tet does a remix of "Chandelier." I love Four Tet but it loses something as trip hop. The Plastic Plates remix is much better. Ooh, a Piano Mix, too.

Nah, the original is the best. Sparse percussion and ethereal noises in the background. Nice. Lana Del Rey or Lorde-esque.

New-to-me favorites from #5:

Black Betty -- Spiderbait (Val Rannous). Just as good as the famous Ram Jam version, and even more over the top (which is the best way to do a song like this.)
Taj Mahal -- Jorge Ben Jor (Don Quixote). I agree with everything that has been said about it so far. Infectious.
One Vision -- Queen (Higgins). Given its history, I probably should have come across this, but I don't remember it. (I never saw Iron Eagle.) Great rocker with Freddie doing Freddie things.
Soul Rebel -- Bob Marley (Manster). I never came across this one either. The soulfulness of the vocal arrangement is what I really like here.

Shout Outs

@Ilov80s

Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
(duplicate, second vote)

This is more in line with how highly this song should be ranked, IMO.

@Oliver Humanzee

53rd &3rd - Ramones

Outstanding track about a gutter profession. Makes it sound palatable.

@Manster

Battery - Metallica

I suggested -- and it was accepted -- that our team skate (hockey) out to this song as an entrance song our senior in high school and the visiting crowd started headbanging mockingly. Silly fools. What a crazy song that was for '86 or so (never mind '90, which was when we did that). There was nothing like it at the time, even four years later. That fast, that heavy, that precise, that accessible and not about Satan (because Slayer was doing that in spades, just Slaytanically). Great track.

My Own Song

rockaction

Buzzcut Season - Lorde

I chose this track because it's a deeper cut and picking "Royals" seemed passé. Only picking "Royals" wouldn't have been passé at all, and I should have picked "Royals" because that song blew me away when it came out. I never thought a person that young could articulate something like status and economic inequality the way Lorde did in that track. That's not a political comment, by the way, as being unequal in status and economics has been around since the beginning of time. But to paint it like she did is brilliant.

Anyway, "Buzzcut Season" is a more ethereal track, with a subtler hip hop beat and sprinkling of pianos. I particularly love the lyric that goes

I remember when your head caught flame
It kissed your scalp and caressed your brain
Well you laughed, "Baby, it's okay.
It's buzzcut season anyway."

That's quite a lot in one lyric. If you've ever lit your head on fire -- and I have doing some bad stuff -- I can assure you the panic that goes along with it is crazy. Hair smells, your scalp lights, everything catches flame in a scary instant. To laugh afterwards and think about aesthetics is the perfect picture of a teenage male, risking life and limb often, seemingly immortal, unfazed by the circumstances that he has wrought with his implied carelessness or willfulness. It's an evocative image and Lorde makes the most of it. I love the track.

I have seen 14 of the 31 songs on my list performed live, in most cases by the original artist. In one case by a child of the original artist.
I have see n 16 of the 31 live. Could be 23 by the end of next Saturday. Hoping it gets to at least 20.

LOL - based on your handful of artists that means you went to 3 concerts :lmao:

I'm 0 for 31 on the live thing.

Wow. That's bad. I should have at least seen ****ed Up and PUP and Daft Punk one time. I really regret not being into Daft enough to where I would want to see a show. That's probably my biggest regret of the countdown.

yeah a total of 4 (initially had 3) :sadbanana:

Freedom Fighters - Todd Rundgren's Utopia

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

Wings - Venus & Mars

not yet presented on this list ...

I had 12 on my final list dammit!

Had about 40 on my first cut of around 80 songs. I'm thinking I've been to around 70-80 concerts.

I’ve seen 0 of my 31 live.
I have seen one, but they didn't release the track I picked for six years after I saw them. There's a handful of picks where I could have or tried to see them live but for whatever reason it didn't work out

53rd & 3rd - Ramones - OH

lookin' at them, then hearing them in interviews, one woulda been hard pressed to have pegged DeeDee as the primary lyric penner ... but, then again, after digesting said lyrics, it makes all the sense in the world.

Johnny were the drill Sargent, Joey the girl-group aficionado/dreamer, and DeeDee were the street - always.

a dysfunctional dynamic that they were compelled to make work - forced, even (mostly by Johnny)

DeeDee's H.o.F. acceptance speech brings a tear - dude had it rough, mostly by his own hand ... but he had a ton of grit and gravel in him, amazed he made it as long as he did, tbh.

this is one that is ALL his ... they renamed a street down the LES "Joey Ramone Way" - would love to see a green street sign over the exising one on 53rd proclaiming it "DeeDee Drive"

then i took out my razor blade
then i did what god forbade
now the cops are after me
but i proved that i'm no Sissy

they had no choice but to allow him vocals on that passage ... Joey just couldn't.

🖤

@Just Win Baby Baby I used Eruption as your pick since there isn't a Eruption/You really got me combo in anything that Van Halen has released live or otherwise. Even using your video link, the guy states he put those together.

@krista4 not sure how you want to count the song since it's not a band released combo?

I think that Eruption/You Really Got Me were played back-to-back on classic rock radio stations, much like Green Day's Brain Stew/Jaded in modern rock times, even though they're separate tracks. That might be where he's getting that from. They're sequenced back-to-back on Van Halen, at least.

But they are separate tracks, never released as a combo track. Although they have done other combo tracks fronted by Eruption.

I see no reason why they can’t be back to back on the playlist. They were always played on the radio together, like Brain Damage and Eclipse.

I think that Eruption/You Really Got Me were played back-to-back on classic rock radio stations, much like Green Day's Brain Stew/Jaded in modern rock times, even though they're separate tracks. That might be where he's getting that from. They're sequenced back-to-back on Van Halen, at least.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Eruption alone. YRGM on occasion though.

I see no reason why they can’t be back to back on the playlist.

just don't set Spotty to shuffle ... Eruption leading in to anything else is beyond bizarre - and hearing the blazing opening riff of YRGM cold, with no lead in, is borderline blasphemous.

But they are separate tracks, never released as a combo track. Although they have done other combo tracks fronted by Eruption.

They are indeed. I think when you grow up with a format that always plays them together, you think of them together.

I don't care (at all) what either goes down or what the ruling is; I just wanted to explain his mindset.

I hope the "I don't care" doesn't sound petulant. I think we'll all live whatever outcome comes of this. Plus, it's a pain in the *** for you who has been doing the playlists faithfully. I understand that. Your good deed is not going to be punished by me, that's for sure.

The point is that they are two songs, not one, which makes it hard for both tracking for points and playlists.

When I submitted my list, I also sent this comment:

I like to think of Eruption and You Really Got Me as being linked. So I presented those as one selection. If that isn't valid, you can strike Eruption, and I'll stick with You Really Got Me.

I’ve seen 0 of my 31 live.

Same here, 0 of 31. Actually, I'm zero for everybody's list. I went from "living in rural hicksville" to "poor college student" to "most of the bands I like don't make music anymore" to "I wish I was healthy enough to be able to walk into a concert venue and enjoy myself", and really never had the opportunity. The only one that really disappoints me is Mrs. R tried to convince me to go to my very last chance to see Rush live when they were doing their farewell R40 tour. I ended up chickening out for various reasons (paying for a pricy seat, not knowing if I was physically up to it, having to go solo...), and I still berate myself for not finding a way. ANY way. Especially after Neil Peart died.
Kicking myself for not getting out to one of the Rush concerts too.

Also 0 for everyone's list. I've been going to a couple concerts a year recently and couldn't name the artist in the last five. Just looked up one...The Head & The Heart. I liked the opener Shaky Graves better. Just don't get the appeal unless you're a huge fan. Cracks me up that the 20th tune in their catalog is moving people like Benny Hinn is healing them. More power to those folks. Hilight of the night was hitting a FD tourney on the NFL game going on at the same time. I enjoy rap but I can't imagine they're being an artist that I like enough of their music to part with a couple of bills.

Feel the same way about sports though. Went to a Denver Broncos game last year. Same deal...don't get the appeal of sweating with strangers in a dump of a stadium and waiting 20 minutes for $14 beers. I could maybe see it if you're a huge fan and they're good.

It's like Def Leppard's Bringin' On The Heartbreak needing to go into Switch 625. It's a necessity.

it's essential - the necessary big comedown from the roundhouse that side one of "High n' Dry" were - what a great opening salvo of songs.

did Mariah do likewise with "Switch"?

Really surprised at the lack of Dave Matthews appearances in these list. I'm not saying he should be on these lists, just that I expected we'd see more of him.
#2 Touring band in the last 40 years, second only to U2, and after this tour they will be close to #1. So I was also expecting to see more selections. I wasn't expecting the majority of picks so far to be from Some Devil, that was a bit surprising. But tbh I typically listen only to live shows, not very often do I listen to just an album.

My top 5 from the 27 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. Sullie: Cult Of Personality - Living Colour
  2. landrys hat: Seek Up (Live at Red Rocks 1995) - Dave Matthews Band
  3. DrIanMalcolm, shuke: This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
  4. Mrs. Rannous: The Stairs - INXS
  5. New Binky the Doormat: Can't Find My Way Home - Blind Faith
Great choices on Seek Up, especially this live version, the Stairs, and Can't Find My Way Home.

Hey, anybody wanna talk about "The Weight" by The Band?

Groovy song?

What's your favorite verse?

Mine's the one where Annie takes her load off. Oh, that's the chorus? Hot damn! I like the part about Nazareth, then. Very Christ-invoking.

Take a load of Annie
Take it off for free
Take a load off Annie
And then you put the load right on me...

What?

What?
I just don't get it. This song just seems average to me. I guess I'm the only one.

You're not the only one. I'm with you.

Metamorfose Ambulante - Raul SeixasDon QuixoteI'm not immediately attracted to "Spanish-influenced" music, but this hits the mark - sounds very 60s-70s songwriter

The 28 Pointers playlist

@Just Win Baby Baby I used Eruption as your pick since there isn't a Eruption/You really got me combo in anything that Van Halen has released live or otherwise. Even using your video link, the guy states he put those together.

@krista4 not sure how you want to count the song since it's not a band released combo?

Ah, sorry, should have noted that one. I couldn't find those two together either but thought maybe you would. I only counted the points for "You Really Got Me," but you can put them both together on the playlist.
