Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

I don't want to anti-Thumper, but OH's comment on today's Dire Straits song made me

"That's what you get when you're shopping at The Beige Store in 1978."

(Sorry to drafter. I really didn't think it was so bad.)

Newly posted known favorites:
Just Win Baby: Eruption / You Really Got Me - Van Halen
Pip’s Invitation: Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
Dr. Octopus: Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
The Dreaded Marco: Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies
worrierking: Layla - Derek And The Dominos
New Binky the Doormat: The Needle And The Damage Done - Neil Young

Favorite new to me:
Don Quixote: Metamorfose Ambulante - Raul Seixas
otb_lifer: Gallowdance - Lebanon Hanover
landrys hat: Dripping Sun - Kikagaku Moyo - WOW!!!!!!

28-pointer listening party, partly with OH:

Special shout-outs:

- "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley - I had no idea this was the name of that song. :bag:
- "Fantasy" by Aldo Nova - yes, it's the third time selected, but the first time OH was part of the listening party. "Wait, is this Loverboy?" It took until the part where it said "fantasy" that he yelled, "Aldo Nova!"
- "Like A Hurricane" by Neil Young - since this came right after Dire Straits, it included a lot of commentary about how much better a guitarist Neil Young is than Mark Knopfler. "See? Listen... See? Listen to that!"
- "Europa" by Santana - He normally dislikes Santana but identified this as a winner. I agree.

New-to-ME favorites (capitalization to distinguish from OH):

- "Gallowdance" by Lebanon Hanover - He came in after a few seconds had passed. I asked if he liked liked this band, since I assumed he would know them. He didn't know them. Said it was like "my blues" and "everything I listen to." High praise. Made my favorites list, too.
- "Dripping Sun" by Kikagaku Moyo - Both of us were huge fans! Highest on my must-listen-again list.
- "The Girl And The Robot" by Royksopp and Robyn - He thought it sounded like New Order, which is a big compliment. I had to turn off with the female vocal, but loved the music.
- "Truth Hits Everybody" by The Police - Neither of us is a Police fan, especially him, but we both thought this was great. He reminded me how amazing a drummer Stewart Copeland is, and I reminded him that Copeland's favorite drummer is...Ringo.
- "Battery" by Metallica - New only to me, of course. I loved it, and he said he was transported to being 14 again. Actually, he was 9 or 10 at the time, or he's lied about his age. Nah, I'm the only one who can manage to renew our passports, so I'm confident.

I'm going to go ahead and say it. Stewart Copeland is the best drummer in in this draft. There, it has been said.

Suck it Rush fanboys.

I'd give you Copeland by a hair given that Peart is covered by 6 feet of dirt.

Really surprised at the lack of Dave Matthews appearances in these list. I'm not saying he should be on these lists, just that I expected we'd see more of him.
#2 Touring band in the last 40 years, second only to U2, and after this tour they will be close to #1. So I was also expecting to see more selections. I wasn't expecting the majority of picks so far to be from Some Devil, that was a bit surprising. But tbh I typically listen only to live shows, not very often do I listen to just an album.
That's an interesting stat.

Is the issue that DMB puts out a lot of good material but not top shelf material? Are they Rod Carew in a world of Reggies and Winfields?

Je sais - Shy'm
(new artist)

Today's @ditkaburgers pick takes her back to her trip to Paris in 2010 with the Girl Scouts. They had some shopping time in a mall so she hung out in Fnac, a big music stores and listened to French music at a kiosk. Shy'm caught her eye as the only Black face in a rack of White folks so she listened to this song on repeat.

"Je sais" has kind of an old fashioned sound by ditkaburgers standards with its prominent piano line and handclapping rhythm.

It Makes No Difference (Last Waltz Version) - The Band
(duplicate, second vote)

My first exposure to The Band outside of the radio was penultimate album of the classic lineup Northern Lights, Southern Cross. It came out when I was 15. The two songs I dug the most were this one and their epic of the French Canadian diaspora "Acadian Driftwood". I discovered their back catalog later but by then the ship had sailed.

"It Makes No Difference" is a heartbreaker. When Danko sings "without your love, I'm nothing at all" it makes me want to cry. I went with the Last Waltz version because I prefer the slightly faster tempo and Howard Johnson's horn arrangement beats the synths on the studio version.

Not seeing The Band in concert is one of my biggest live music regrets. I missed seeing them by only a couple hundred yards. They were headlining Milwaukee's Summerfest during their final tour in 1976. I was on the grounds that day but my high school friends and I went to one of the side stages instead. :bag:

Since it seems like there's been a Metallica song or two every day, it's reminded me of my Metallica story. It's not very good and I'm sure I've told it here before but it's been a while and now you all know one of the main characters better.

She must have been 2 or 3 years old because her brother wasn't on the scene yet. There's a lovely urban park in Pacific Heights that's officially named Alta Plaza but ditkaburgers always called it the Horsie Park because its playground had a little carousel with four fiberglass horses. ditkaburgers loved riding that thing and would wait patiently for her favorite horse which I believe was the yellow one. She'd stay on that thing for as long as I was willing to push it. Anyways, we had just arrived at Horsie Park and she was really excited and kind of hopping down the path to the playground. she was a little ways ahead of us because we had her stroller and the accoutrements that come with toddlers. As she passed a couple sitting on a bench with a big dog on leash, the dog didn't take kindly to a little girl dressed in pink jumping around and took a lunge at her. It happened so fast that I have no idea how close the dog actually got to her but she's our baby so my adrenaline was up. I was going to say something to the couple but when I got there I recognized the owners as Kirk Hammett and his wife. She was very apologetic and ditkaburgers was more interested in getting to the horsies so there's a happy ending.

Gallowdance - Lebanon Hanover (Larissa Iceglass - Switzerland)
(new artist)

A late entry to compete with Interpol and The Sisters of Mercy for the title of "who is most influenced by Joy Division?"

yeah, fingerprints of influence all over it - though i've always leaned a little more to the Cure's troika of "17 Seconds", "Faith", "Pornography" (circa '80-'81, the prime post punk/goff Bob) as being the influence sweet spot - but even ol' Bob were never this dark.

The Vid

crucial accompaniment - William exiting the store to the strains of the mindless pop 'let's make the most of the night like we're gonna die young!' blaring out.

*cue the numbing bassline*

the vid is as cold and bleak as that soundscape they laid down - they went heavy to convey this atmosphere, and i'm all over it - the best of this ilk is always tilting to the more theatric & bombastic side - if you're gonna sing the string is always ready in a tune called "Gallowdance", well then ya better have the self awareness to sledge hammer the vamp.

as long as we're not hanging

the Goff girl 'two step', which dominated the scene's dance floors, takes on new meaning here with Larissa sporting the noose ... the body movements evocative of somebody freshly swingin' from said gallows - if you are buying into their shtick thus far, then this vid vaults it into orbit.

but it always comes back to the mesmerizing song - it's from another dimension, one that grabbed at me throat (pun intended) and wouldn't let go ... i've listened to a ton of post punk/goff over the past 40 years, and this was as fresh and exciting as the first strains of Bauhaus, JD, JaMC, etc

28 reasons not to spoil
1 - Interesting to see the pick of Bryan Adams. Man he could write a hit. Not sure if we should have seen more of him or less. Hard to turn off Summer of 69 at the very least.

2 & 3 - Such a variety of Marley Tracks. Will be interesting if we see any new ones coming up. His catalog is so deep too. Amazing artist.

4 - I feel dirty after listening to this. Had to put some Joy Division on after to cheer myself up. That noose in the video...jeebus. Not subtle. Interpol are friggin “Don’t Stop Me Now” compared to this. Nice to hear though. I enjoyed it.

5- ive never got into LCD Soundsystem. After listening to this maybe thats a mistake. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Great rhythm and noise.

6 This was eligible and no one picked it yet? Id pick it for the “Piano exit” alone. Amazing to think it has eventually been credited to Rita Coolidge. I always thought it was Eric Clapton playing that amazing riff. Turns out it was Duane Allman...i think.

7 - Saw a couple of rave reviews and thought i had to check it out. Thats the amazing part about this with some people pulling stuff from the recesses of their collection or stuff theyve found. Id rather check out all this new to me **** than stuff ive heard a 1000 times. Im sure theres a minefield of interesting stuff in asian music. Maybe more so than south american and african music. This was such an interesting piece. Sweet vocals, interesting but different music

8 - Always had a soft spot for Rihanna since this song. Its nice when they do somethimg interesting with a sample and thats the case here. Whoda thought she wouldnturn into the superstar she became when this came out.

9 i was trying to squeeze Abba, A Ha, Royksopp and Robyn into two spots, and leaving some damn fine Norwegian and Swedish music on the shelf. Ultimately because royksopp and robyn have collaborated on about a dozen tracks, 2 could become 3, meaning a choice between Abba and AHa. This track is the second single from Royksopps glorious album Junior. Luckily I got a leave pass to head to London to watch the Royksopp gig, their only one in the UK for this tour. As most of their tracks are female led, they always have a couple of touring female vocalists to cover the dozen or so songs sung by the likes of Robyn, Karen Dreijer Anderson, Anneli Drecker, Suzanne Sundfor, Lykke Li etc, so it was a great surprise when Robyn herself came out to sing this song and a couple of others. Great gig.

10 Jon Anderson has such a great and distinctive voice. As a fan of Vangelis, i prefer the Jon and Vangelis stuff, but Anderson is always a great listen. No difference here, but he is underutilized. Seems to have been a fractious recording with 2 separate camps. The egos of 8 seem to have been fun to manage

11 interesting track. Shes gorgeous too. Her mother is french, but her father is from martinique which is where she gets her tan palor from. The charts really suck these days. One track of hers charts at 174, the next at 2. This one at 70...all the French charts of course. Of curiousity she won the french dancing with the stars comp and then became a judge. She moves great in the video for this track.

12 - Looks like a song making a run. O/U on top 3 appearances = 6

4 - I feel dirty after listening to this. Had to put some Joy Division on after to cheer myself up. That noose in the video...jeebus. Not subtle. Interpol are friggin “Don’t Stop Me Now” compared to this. Nice to hear though. I enjoyed it.

i usually treat myself to a sit with "Begotten" (hope to see it on a future flicks list here) to come back to earth - better than an Absinthe smoothie.

6 This was eligible and no one picked it yet? Id pick it for the “Piano exit” alone. Amazing to think it has eventually been credited to Rita Coolidge. I always thought it was Eric Clapton playing that amazing riff. Turns out it was Duane Allman...i think.

"LAYLA" fatigue is real ... but then i see "Bohemian Rhapsody" making a late push, so maybe top 3 glory also awaits Layla? dunno.

i chose "Thorn Tree in the Garden" off that platter, and i like the other coupla non Layla selections up in here, too ... there is still one dangling, though, which i thought for sure would've been a few votes deep already.

The Union album has a crazy history. After the Big Generator album (1987), Jon Anderson left Yes and joined with former Yes members who were not part of the '80s lineup in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe. They released an album in the late '80s that returned to the progginess of their '70s work. In 1990, ABWH began work on their second album, while the remnants of the '80s Yes began working on an album with Trevor Rabin doing most of the singing. Then Anderson had a dream in which everyone from both bands played together. He convinced the other musicians and a bunch of lawyers to make it happen. Most of the resulting album, Union, is stuff from what would have been the second ABWH record (with Tony Levin on bass, the only Yes tracks Chris Squire did not play on until his death), but four tracks were from the sessions of the Rabin/Squire wing, and to these Anderson added vocals. Lift Me Up was one of those. The resulting tour in 1991 was the only time all eight participants actually played together (and the show I saw from it was spectacular.)

Summer of '69 is an all timer - and also on the list of Songs I Don't Really Need To Hear Again.

I like a lot of Adams' 80's stuff but I don't know that more of his stuff should have been included here.

Well, “Don’t Stop Me Now” was discussed at same length earlier in the countdown. I’ll mostly add that it’s another high-energy song that grabs me. And yes, being featured in one of the best scenes of the Cornetto Trilogy helps, of course.

Now then, 4. More than just a Foreign Album title (from which I took a song earlier). I’m going with 4 for favorites, and 4 for didn’t know. But wait, that’s fewer songs than usual? Well, not quite, because I’m also going 4 deep for Dig The Vibe, thanks partially to such strong selection there.

#4s
Recognized by title alone: 24
Sounded familiar: 4
Knew from this countdown: 1
Didn't know: 13

Buzzcut Season (rockaction)

Same could be said for just about any given ‘60s/‘70s/‘80s band - maybe with the exception of Stryper.

Sax and horns have been a huge part of the band from the beginning, and there have been essentially two lineups. One with LeRoi Moore and one after he passed. With LeRoi, it was mainly sax, and live there would be a smattering of horns. After LeRoi, it's sax and horns with Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross as permanent members.

Fantasy - Aldo NovaDoug Bwow - what a throwback classic, another great pull

I wasn't going to touch on Nova's connection with Celine Dion because I forgot that she's already been tabbed. But I went back and checked (twice so far and, yeah, the Jim Steinman song was one, natch).

Anyway. I don't know if anyone remembers the 2008 TV movie Celine based on her 2000 autobiography. In the film, right after she won the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest**, there was a scene where Rene Angelil (her then manager and future husband) was going over all the Canadian songwriters and producers that wanted to work with her. Angelil rattled off a list and mentioned "Aldo Nova".

I did a double-take: Could Nova have molded Dion into a hard-rock goddess had she and Angelil chosen a different path?

In real life, it turned out that Aldo Nova had branched out beyond hard rock. In fact, at least in his writing for other artists, he left hard rock way behind ... kind of a similar change in musical sensibilities that Richard Marx and Michael Bolton underwent. And a few of those softer, more commercial songs fit comfortably onto Celine's 1990s multi-platinum albums.

I'm going to kind of invoke the Thumper Rule on myself and just say that Celine Dion is as technically proficient on these songs as you'd expect her to be.

Aldo Nova did return to releasing hard-rock bangers in recent years, though not a load of new material. He put out Aldo Nova 2.0 -- mostly re-recordings of his 1982-91 output -- in 2018 and a "reloaded" version of the same album last year. Here's "Fantasy 2.0" -- the instrumental sections are fantastic, though his vocals were better in '82.

** So how did Canadian Celine Dion get to sing for Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest? I wondered the same thing. Turns out there are no limits on nationality whatsoever in the Eurovision Song Contest.

I noticed that I seemed to own a lot more of my songs this time, so I counted them up. I originally owned 23 of them! Huge number. Yuge.

[Two songs yet to be revealed]

When all is revealed I will "own" 27 of my 31 songs.

There's one person in there that reminds me of when squisition joined that one music draft.
I love a good disagreement now and again, but it's made that thread freaking exhausting.

I assume I know which one you guys are talking about, but when I left the thread there were 3-4 that had made it unreadable. I'd hoped for discussion of movies, but those 3-4 people added no substance whatsoever. Just "if you don't rank the movie I loved as a kid highly enough you suck"-type comments. No analysis of why they loved or hated something - far from it, in fact, as several of them declared that certain movies sucked having never seen them. Then the accusations flying that these were somehow NOT KP's and 80s' actual favorites or something? Bah. Just no recognition in there of all the effort put into the exercise.

As an aside, I think I'd be embarrassed if my tastes and preferences hadn't changed since I was a kid, but several seem to wear it as a badge of honor. A little nostalgia is understandable and relatable, but it's like some people are stuck in their childhoods. I feel bad for them.

Seems to be a lot of drive-by ill-willed thumping in there :kicksrock:

New-to-me favorites from #4:

Dripping Sun -- Kikagaku Moyo (Landryshat). I don't even know how to begin to describe this, but it's trippy AND gorgeous.
Metamorfose Ambulante -- Raul Seixas (Don Quixote). A fun little groover.
53rd & 3rd -- Ramones (OH). Must not have been on the compilation that my freshman year next door neighbor played EVERY SINGLE DAY. I agree with what OTB said about it.
Buzzcut Season -- Lorde (Rockaction). Striking.
Call the Police -- LCD Soundsystem (Shuke). My favorite of theirs so far. Sounds like U2, which is a good thing in my book.

(new artist)

I love both Crowded House and Split Enz, but it's one of the Finn Brothers' 2004 collaborations that I can't stop listening to. Sublime, contemplative pop music.
I will listen to anything they do in any configuration. They are WAY, WAY up on my Favorite Artist List.

The first two Finn Brothers albums (one of which has I Won’t Give In) were in heavy rotation for me in the 90s and 00s.
