White Sox pitchers and catchers aren't scheduled to report to Arizona for spring training for another four weeks, but Jake Peavy appears ahead in his lengthy recovery from surgery near his right shoulder.
Pitching coach Don Cooper reported that Peavy, who suffered a detatched latissmus dorsi muscle in July, has been throwing off a mound.
"It's going well," Cooper said. "He's feeling better about his command."
In conversations and text messages, Peavy has revealed to Cooper that he has felt normal stiffness and rustiness at times. But Peavy originally wasn't scheduled to start throwing off a mound until the start of spring training.
Peavy's recovery will dictate whether Chris Sale will join the rotation until Peavy is ready or return to the bullpen, where he could be the closer. Sale, 21, posted a 1.93 ERA after being promoted to the majors last August.
"Everybody's got to be ready," Cooper said of his relievers. "Let's face it. From the seventh inning on, everyone's got to be on their toes, not knowing who we're going to choose. I want them to be mentally acute."
