Johnny Danks takes a liner off the skull in the 4th and stays in to pitch a gem.Regardless of how asinine it was to question a pitcher with an above .500 record and above average peripherals, over the last 2 years in the first place, I think it's safe to say someone's put on their "big boy pants"
Ridiculous statements here Limp. Your problem is you are stuck in stat mode. Great for fantasy players but you just don't have the Cubbie thing quite purged. Once again- it is all about winning championships. Taking a liner to the back of the head is no laughing matter and trust me when I tell you that residual effects can be more than possible. Regardless- the Danks stat line this year is all that matters. This is a vastly underacheiving unit that will not be able to contend with the Tigers and the Twins. Heck- they will take their lumps against the Royals. The bullpen looked great last night. Wait until they have to nail down a save. Take out PK and this team is on the level of the Cubs. I see that you are in kicking Ozzie mode. Good for you dude. Ozzie has to work with the mutts that your boy sent him and the results for the past 5 years have been failure in my world- unless you want to count stats.

I like Ozzie as well. The players talk about how they enjoy playing for him. He treats his players as professionals because at this level they are supposed to put on their big boy pants.

What is funny about that is that I have considered cheering for both teams in the past, why not? But I am not sure if I could handle two losing teams. The Cubs have done enough of that in my lifetime. And I know the overall the Sox are a bit more successful (with one great year) in the last 30 years, but a season like this could actually depress me if I was cheering for both.

I am not a big Cub hater myself. I do not care for the goons that act like convicts at Wrigley but there is no denying that the ballpark and the neighborhood are very cool. We all watched the Cubs on WGN and the Sox on Ch. 44. Harry and Stoney really brought a festive feel to the team and that carried over into the 90s and beyond.

I use to check into the Sox to watch Frank Thomas bat. I though he was more in control of an at bat then any hitter I had ever seen. Liked watching Bo Jackson and One Dog as well. I don't have any hate. My house was a Cub fan house. Only my older brother would throw in Sox hate but Big Frank to was too good to resist (I was 12 in 1990). I do find it difficult to talk to Sox fans at times since they often brimming with Cub hate (not saying Cubs fans are much different). It wouldn't be a huge jump for me to cheer for them.

You're problem is that you're just not realistic. No matter how loud you want to scream it from the mountain top, it's not about winning championships. It's a business and it's about making money. Championships? Those are nice but once you get into the position to win one, too much luck comes into place. What I want is a team that puts itself in position to win those championships. It's about making the playoffs. Kenny Williams has done that more often than anyone in this city. When John Danks has an above .500 record, a WHIP and ERA better than the average AL starting pitcher and does it while pitching in a bandbox, he's one of those pieces that can help put you in that position. In 2008 John Danks WAR was 6.4. Third in the American League among SPs2009-2010, 4.8. Ranked 7th in the AL reach year.I'm not going to worry about John Danks struggling to get a W for 6 weeks when the whole of the last 3-4 years is that of an All Star caliber pitcher. If you don't think John Danks is a piece that gets you in position to win a championship, then you still don't understand baseball. Kenny's going to go down soon enough though. So you can be happy and ignore that fact that pretty much all GMs get fired when it's all said and done and claim you were right about him all along. But IMO, until this year, he's been one of the best GMs in baseball for about 6-7 years.

I understand your position and felt the same way for years but I grew tired of 3rd place or getting bounced in the playoffs. I agree that baseball is a business but if that business is about putting a big name or two in place to put folks in the seats- well that does not serve the fans. This is the formula that has hit the Sox this year and it is failing because a carry over from the past few years has put in some underacheiving pieces. That is being realistic. Luck is not magic. Winning is about opportunity meeting a situation while being prepared. Maybe Ozzie is the problem. Maybe these players as a whole are the problem. Perhaps the chairman is a problem. From what I understand- Kenny gave Jerry two plans this year and Jerry wanted to go for it all. All In. Maybe there is more going on behind the scenes that we just don't know about? Regardless- you can point at year after year about how "the pieces" are supposed to fall in place for a baseball team to compete, sell tickets, sell concessions and if the stars align- they just might win a championship. From what I gather here- there is a plan to make money first and if the stars align and a championship is attained that is all just icing on the cake. That might be good for the players and the chairman but for the fans it might not be acceptable and based on the attendance figures taking a dive- it appears that the fan base is not buying into it. Maybe the fans are getting tired of paying inflated prices for a game. Maybe corporate handouts have dwindled due to cuts from the recession. Maybe we were spoiled with a championship and hunger for more. I see a core of players on this team from the 2005 squad and felt for certain that they would have won another championship by now. The Sox have put the focus on having a group of solid starting pitching over the past dozen years and have supported that cast with bombers but they have failed with the fundamentals. They either hit all at once or suck all at once. They get solid bullpen work when they are down in a game and they are a shotgun ride to disaster when it comes to nailing down a save. Teams like the Twins know that they can beat the Sox by stealing, hit and running, getting solid pitching and playing the best defense that they can play. The Sox are good at one of these strategies and mediocre at the others. This is a team that is built on pitching and big name HR hitters and they are failing because only one or two of their HR hitters are hitting HRs. Dunn and Rios are big names that were brought in to light the fireworks and that has failed. Kenny is on the hot seat and Ozzie is on the hot seat. The team beats themselves 1/3rd of the time and that is on the players. They have been coddled like little spolied brats these players and they have underacheived like no other team in baseball for the past several years. You think that the fans are going to come out and drop some hard earned bucks on these guys? Correct me if I am wrong, but in your world the fans should accept watching a team being good enough to draw interest, stay out of the red and watch as the GM puts in big names in the off season to replenish the hype. Yes- it is a business and yes someone will be accountable and we know that it will not be the players. Perhaps the Sox bring out the best in other teams. Heck- Big Z was not going to come out and lay out a stinker last night. He knows that a solid outing on the Sox will go a LONG way with Cub fans. He got beat by PK who just so happens to be on an MVP pace. Outside of that- what you saw last night was the best we will see from this team. They will put lumps on some avaerage pitchers but what I am seeing here is not winning baseball and all the stats from the past will not salvage this season. This team lacks leadership from the players in my opinion and needs a kick in the ### but these days- that is too harsh. Better just get the fillet mignon sandwiches on the buffet table and hope that they decide to play up to the level that they should because this season has been just a complete cluster....

Great write up PM

I still think this team doesn't want to play for a manager that threw one of their former players(link) under the bus this off season.

Once you lose the trust of your ball club, you may as well call the fat lady.

Very talented team, that just seems to play flat most of the time.

Could be. It feels like Kenny and Ozzie are just waiting for the axe to fall. Maybe we are honing in on the root cause here. Keeny and Ozzie are just not playing well in the sandbox again? The table is being set by the media and the fans for bringing up minor leaguers at the expense of sitting vets that are not performing BUT are making some bucks. This might be the catalyst that ends the Ozzie era and from what I heard- Jenks pulled a class move with "Moose" Skowron.

A loss tonight and/or a sweep at the hands of the Cubs will be disasterous to the Sox much to the glee of Cub nation. Stay tuned...

The bullpen was nails the last 2 games. Another series win...if they win the next series they will be back at .500. Rios is actually showing signs of life also. Dunn is still god awful. I'm watching the Chicago Tribune Live replay on Comcast and they just said he is 1-48 against lefties. I also saw Viciedo is tearing it up down in AAA. I wonder if there is any chance he comes up soon.

:goodposting: He's a manager who looks out for his players and doesn't give a #### what people think. He makes mistakes, but the good thing about Ozzie is he will ALWAYS tell you how he feels. As a Sox fan, I will take that any day of the week. People will miss Ozzie when he is gone.

Got jobbed on that call at first and than the flood gates opened up. I saw that coming a mile away right after it happened. Ugh

A win today will keep the Sox on a nice roll of just winning a series. They have to win 2 of 3 or 3 of 4 until they get in a groove. If this team can just play up to their potential they will run the table in the division. Heck- if Rios and Beckham can pick up their hitting look out. Viciedo? From what I am hearing they would have to cut someone on their current roster and eat millions. With the injury to Danks, they might have to put him on the DL. Maybe that will get Viciedo up here- if anything the move to get him here might light a fire on Pierre or Viciedo just takes over. Something has to give. Perhaps the Sox will not even bring a position player up. With Danks going to the DL, the Sox need Jake to stay healthy and that is no gaurantee.

The Nats broadcast team just gave a stat that is literally unbelievable.

Dunn is 1-52 (.019) vs. LHP.

You could go up to the plate and blindly swing at the first pitch 52 times and you should get 8 hits.

Yeah it is pretty ugly. Not sure why he is back hitting clean up. Also he has 98 strike outs already.

Another tough loss. The Nats are getting some awesome pitching but the Sox had the wind knock down two potential bombs. 9 more LOB. I might not be a baseball brainiac but in all my years of watching the Sox I have never quite seen anything like this Dunn situation. 4 more strikeouts. At this pace- he will break his personal worst SO total for a season BUT he will not even sniff his average power numbers. He is clearly wasting space in the middle of the lineup and PK does not have any protection in the lineup. Sad to see but this team desperately needs another consistent bat in the lineup and with the ASB coming up, Kenny needs to work his "magic"...

Glad the Tigers got VMArt and not Dunn.

I can't remember the last time I saw the wind take a sure HR away from someone like that ball Konerko hit today. I don't think there was anyone in the staduim or watching on TV that did not think that thing was 20 rows up, and it just got beat down by those heavy winds. I'm sure a few HRs were lost today and maybe both teams suffered, but I just haven't seen Mother Nature take a ball like that in a really long time.

To make matters worse, Dunn has only two hits in his last 26 at-bats, just one hit in 56 at-bats against left-handers and 14 hits in 111 at-bats at U.S. Cellular Field, which has turned into a boo factory when he walks back to the dugout.
Sweet Jeebus, what a :tfp:

Do these guys ever win in extras? Some painful loses.

Wasting a ####load of good pitching lately.

The nightmare rolls on. There was no way they were going to win that game last night w the pathetic on the road w a lame offense routine going. This is going to get ugly come late July. The team is stuck with mutts that are killing the payroll and clogging up the potential for young players to get a shot. OK- well if they cannot touch these lousy vets- I think they send Morel down and bring up Dayan Viciedo and put your uber stud Teahan at third base and have him earn the ridiculous amounts of money they paid him to be bad.

I think Viciedo will be brought up sooner rather than later. He's hitting .330 right now and has 55 Rbis. I doubt they would send Morel down though. Should get interesting.

I was praying Dunn would stay on the bench this series, but he didn't.

6th inning he's 0-3 and has hit into 2 double plays. Hey, at least he hasn't struck out yet.

Nice win in spite of Dunn. I hope we don't see him the entire Cubs series.

Sweep the Cubs and the Sox can go above .500. :boxing:
