I think (no quotes, etc) that is the answer. My guess is that initially it would a slight maybe 55/40/5 split with Ward getting the higher numer and Slaton/Chris O. getting the junk carries. Tate would have the chance to earn more, but as of three weeks ago the staff was complaining that they had not seen what Tate could do. Doubting that it went from that to his getting 65% of the work as clear lead back.
My gut tells me it would be mostly Tate. But that's only from watching a couple Texans preseason games this year. He just seems to have more explosiveness than Ward, and I don't think he would be taken out of games if he as making plays
I really like what I have seen from Ben Tate. Derrick Ward is the easy answer, but Kubiak has been impressed by him. The main area he needs to improve is pass protection.
I own all 3, but truly don't think I will need to worry.
Foster will be rested and properly rehabbed... Of course, the issue could flare up again, but from the things Ive read and heard, he'll be ok.
That being said, Tate is definitely going to be the Foster replacement. Look at the difference in production so far. Even just watching the games, Tate has "it".
I don't know either, but Kubiak, at least publicly, seems to think so: "That was the thing I told the coaches I was very encouraged with because when you play back there you want to be a three-down player in this league. You got to be able to protect the quarterback and he got his chances and stepped up and knew what he was doing. He was physical at the point so I was very encouraged by his whole game; not just his running, obviously that was good but he did handle himself well in protection too"
All indications today were very positive from a standpoint of what they're dealing with compared to what they were dealing with the first time, and Arian's very positive about it," Kubiak said. "It sounds like we're heading in the right direction."
Foster isn't the problem. Deciding who backs him up could be a problem. Derrick Ward averaged 6.3 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns in that role last season. In two preseason games, Ben Tate has carried 20 times for 147 yards and a TD.
"We're still lining up with Derrick as our two and Tate as our three, but there's going to be a lot of football played (at Minnesota)," Kubiak said. "I think they both bring something different to our team, so I could see us playing three guys on game day.
"Those things will pan out. Let's get through Thursday. I hope they're all standing and all healthy. We'll figure out that problem if we have it."
