It's a relatively busy intersection and it's during higher traffic time. This isn't NYC so people aren't hurrying across the intersection when they are walking. Still, pedestrians at this particular intersection take their sweet time in general (it's right near a university). It's a 4 lane road (2 lanes in each direction) and the right hand lane often has cars that are turning right but have to wait for the pedestrians to cross before they can. This makes traffic that much worse (usually only 3-4 cars can eventually turn).

There is one pedestrian texting on their phone as they walk across the intersection and walking even slower than the others (who are generally strolling across). A car that has been waiting to turn right honks the horn at the pedestrian as soon as they can clear them and turns close to them as soon as they can make the turn. The texter and other pedestrians are startled, clearly annoyed at the honking.

Who is the bigger #######?

So the light is red in this scenario I'm guessing, but the cars are waiting to turn right?
No, the light is green for the traffic. The pedestrians are crossing to the right of the traffic. Cars that are going straight can go but cars turning right have to wait because the pedestrians have a walk signal. Problem is, as it's only 2 lanes going in that direction, if the car in front is waiting to turn right, that entire lane is stuck despite the light being green until the pedestrians clear the road. If they walk fast enough, there'd be plenty of time for more cars to turn.

Oh I see. I am in DC every day and see this all the time. If I'm the pedestrian in these cases, I make sure to get across as quickly as possible. Then again, I'm not honking at idiots strolling across at their own speed (and in DC there is a lot of this). It's part of the circle of stupid.ETA: So in this case everyone is wrong/stupid

It sounds like the light is green. But the car in the right hand lane can't turn right until the pedestrians clear the crosswalk. That ends up backing up the right lane (which may have cars that want to go straight through the green light). The pedestrians do have the right of way, but it's common courtesy to make your way briskly across the street in this type of situation. I've even seen people start to jog when they see someone trying to make a right turn. That's unnecessary of course, but meandering across while texting without even noticing that you are holding up traffic is rude and annoying.

That said, you can't blow through a crosswalk early so close to pedestrians that they are frightened. That's just dangerous.

That's exactly it. That said, the car turning wasn't "dangerous". The texting pedestrian was the last one and then it was clear to turn. The only way it's dangerous is if the pedestrian turned around and walked in the opposite direction as the car was turning. If the honking didn't take place, there would be nothing noteworthy about the turn. It was the turning and honking right as the car was next to the pedestrian that was "frightening".

Okay, but you did say that the car turned just as soon as it could clear them. Not sure how close it was, but if the guy was timing the turn perfectly, what might have happened if the pedestrian stopped short for some reason? It didn't sound like the car was making an appropriately timed turn after the pedestrians were well clear, but if it did and it was just the honking that was the issue, my opinion goes from tie to the pedestrian was the bigger #######.

So I'm guessing you're the driver.
Nope, I was neither. But I was behind the driver that honked. The pedestrian was obnoxiously clueless of all the traffic she was holding up. While I personally wouldn't honk, I do think she deserved it.
Yeah the more I think about this, the pedestrian is the bigger #######. Unfortunately most people in society are completely oblivious and inconsiderate ##### bags

I run into this all the time and it's one of my big pet peeves. If I'm the pedestrian, I almost always break into a little jog to get out of the car's way as a courtesy. If I'm carrying luggage or a work bag or something that makes jogging impractical and/or weird, I at least speed up and walk fast.

If I'm the driver I never honk; that's aggressive and disorderly. Instead I sit there and glare at the people practically crawling their way across the street because they don't give a crap. Assuming they appear to be able-bodied, of course.

The pedestrian, easily. Perfect example of the general lack of common courtesy in our society, and a definite pet peeve.

If the texting coed is attractive and wearing yoga pants then she can take as long as she wants. I say you are the ####### in this situation for not taking some creeper pics and sharing them with the ffa.

If this scenario takes place away from campus or the pedestrian is male or a large female then they are obviously the #######.

Try driving in another country. Honking is seen as more of a hello there wake up and not a F-U like it is here. Car is doing the sexter guy a favor here. Never understood why people get so irate when I beep my horn, every car has one.

When I was in DC this summer for the first time I could tell the locals really loved driving around the city. Constant horns and a couple of road rage spectacles. Simmer down people.

In reality it's about equal, but the way the story is conveyed leaves one frustrated at the pedestrian and they will lose this poll..

OP has to be careful about running somebody over with that schtick. ...

That is weird that the light would be green for traffic at the same time the pedestrians have a walk signal.

So where you live all lights at an intersection are red while pedestrians have a walk signal?

Texter.

One of my biggest pet peeves and a major contributor in my dislike of people in general. Not the texting, per se, but the overall unawareness and indifference toward the plight of others. I get physically uncomfortable if I feel like I'm in someones way or impeding their progress so I'm very conscious of it. Bugs the crap out of me that others don't have the same courtesy.

By the letter of the law, if the pedestrian has the right-of-way, and is actively crossing, the car is the ###. I get that the person texting makes a world of difference as "texting" has become synonymous with "being completely oblivious to your surroundings," but if you swapped "pedestrian texting" with "elderly man with a walker," and both were crossing at the same speed, we'd see near unanimous votes for the honking car being an ###.

From an impact to the driver standpoint, both are the same as they make him have to wait longer.

100% this...I posted something along those lines in another thread recently. Be aware of how your actions impact others. If we all thought beyond "me," the world would be a better place.

Walking from where I park my car to my office 3 blocks away can be hazardous to my health.

Pedestrians in crosswalks have the right of way in MD & VA regardless of the light. In pedestrian mode, I'd rather be alive than right, so I make sure the road is clear before trusting the crosswalk & I break into a trot if I see traffic is waiting while I'm crossing the street. Cars, trucks, buses typically run a red light by my office several times a day so I tend to be hyper vigilant.

When driving I yield to pedestrians. I'm not going to stop for someone standing on the sidewalk texting, but I'm ready to stop should they step into the crosswalk.

Bottom line, there's plenty of blame to go around.

What REALLY bothers me is the cyclists buzzing by on the sidewalks. They get bike lanes on some roads, and are allowed to use the sidewalks when there are none. Thanks, Bethesda MD. Can I drive on the sidewalk?

Pedestrians that stroll through crosswalks or parking lots knowing full well they're holding up traffic are worse than Hitler and those that tailgate.

I'm not asking for a sprint, but just make it look like you're giving an effort.

I was all for saying the texter was the bigger #######, but the bolded puts the driver right up there with them.

The driver is the bigger #######, not for honking, but for brushing back the pedestrian. That's the most egregious behavior in your story.

This.

#### the idiot dragging his feet with his face in his phone.... and I'm a guy who's usually buried in my phone.

It was just a joke. Tanner is one of my favorite posters, by far. It wasn't meant to be serious.
