2 Questions actually in this poll.

-I'm interested in what folks are thinking here and what the expectations are. I cannot see any way Baker takes the field but I also know there are some that believe he is going to play.

I'm pulling for less but bracing for the worst with Watson and right I suspect he gets north of 8 games so was forced to vote Brissett because I don't think Baker will be on the team.

However I'd have voted other if it was an option because I think if Watson's suspension is for the year or maybe even if it's most of the year someone like Jimmy G would start making sense. Jacoby is just throwing the year away and the team's got to much talent to do that.

I also think it's bizarre people think Baker might start week 1 for them. I'll go a step further and if Watson is suspended AND Brissett has some sort of injury.... I'll take the field over Baker starting week 1. They will pick someone else up or start someone off their practice squad.

Right now they are playing poker with the Panthers and crossing their fingers for a QB injury anywhere across the league. They won't let Baker come close to getting injured before the trade deadline.

I still would rather have Baker than ~25-33% of starting QB's around the league. A trade will get done and Baker is fueled by these types of situations so I wouldn't be surprised if his best season(s) are ahead of him. There will be multiple teams that wish they hadn't bought low.

Good thought process here

I'm not understanding how they acquire Jimmy G unless he's outright cut, and I don't see that happening.
I follow about 4-5 SF beat writers and every single one of them think Jimmy G is going to be cut.Because he will be.

And if he's not it's because someone traded for him, which is a small market do to need and salary and the team with the most cap space in the league in the Browns and if they got Watson out of the year they got maybe the most need. He won't cost much since they are going to cut him otherwise.

If Jimmy G was outright cut I think CAR signs him to a multi year contract AND a guarantee to start for at least a full year.

As things stand right now I don't think CLE can match the opportunity even if they can match the $ part of it. He may value the starting job for this year and possibly longer rather than wait to see how many games he gets to be the short term fill in for Watson and will 100% lose the job to Watson no matter how well Jimmy G is playing.

CLE, SF, and CAR are all playing poker right now.... and all three seem to be bluffing at the same time.

I think Watson will be suspended a minimum of 8 games.  There's chatter the NFL wants a full season.  I just think the smart money is on NOT Watson in either poll.

Baker won't play another down for them.

Brissett/other seems like your best bet.

I do believe reports that CAR is working on trading for Baker and they just have a few more details to work out.  I thought SEA was bluffing regarding Baker, was waiting in the wings for him to be cut, but I think they are really are not in on him and right now it looks like a one horse race and Baker is going to be playing for Carolina next year.

Now that gets a lot of people to think, well ok then if Cleveland is trading Baker to CAR and Watson is suspended for most or all of the season then they are probably getting Darnold back. Makes sense but everything I hear says that's not how it would go down, CAR would be keeping both of them.

So then you got Jimmy G. Like Baker won't play again for Cleveland neither will Jimmy for SF. His head coach is saying he expects to trade him, they excused him from OTA's.  Not sure what else anyone needs to see, he's gone one way or another. Makes to much money and can't properly make it Lance's team with him around.  It's really a question of if it's by trade or release. SF would love to trade him for a few reasons. Trade comp is obvious, but also to make sure he does not land in Seattle. Also have heard that Kyle is frustrated because he thinks someone should give them something for Jimmy but due to his injury and maybe team needs no one will give him anything and he's annoyed by it. Of course trading for Jimmy means taking on his $24M contract and he probably can't pass a physical so he has close to if not zero market right now.

So I'm just dot connecting because I've never heard a credible person tie Jimmy G to the Browns but it makes all kinds of sense considering Browns might have the biggest QB need in the league and the most cap space and Jimmy won't cost much draft capital if they got to get him that way.

I just expect Watson to be out most of the year and Jacoby to not be the QB. Who else? Wait and see if Mason Rudolph gets cut? Yikes.

Watson finishing last isn't a shocker but it sure points to him not being on the field in 2022.

-We're potentially on the cusp of him not playing meaningful football for over 2.5 years by the time he gets to 2023. And if he's suspended i don't think he can hang out with the team 24/7 so he's going to have a lot of free time on his hands, sure hope he isn't thinking about meeting more women in his free time. Imagine he slips again or gets into a scuffle at some place he likely shouldn't be because he is away from the team with $230M to spend.

I worry we're still going to get some shocking testimony from these other 4 women that could compromise the NFL.

Do you think Watson is feeling any better this evening? Why now and not settle these 20 bak in Oct/Nov last year? What's changed?

some incentive was added.

last round of settlement talk was to enable a trade

maybe Buzbee dropped the price because he needs the money

or, NFL told him he gets time served if he settles before the season.

Yes, Buzbee needed the money. Guy was skipping lunches every day now he can go to Sizzler’s. Thanks DeShaun.

Time served? For what? Watson refused to play for the Texans and skipped out on the entire season WITH FULL PAY. As of now, his time served is a big fat goose egg.

curious about the bolded....is this simply because you own shares of him in fantasy.....?

I've done some googling recently and can't find this- this btw is a super common viewpoint so I'm frustrated I can't find it.

Officially the Texans didn't play him for non football reasons. I can find this on every reputable site.

In January of 2021 he said he wanted to be traded due to some disapproval of how the GM was hired.

Do you recall where this common view comes from? It seems to be everything in the time served discussion

I was not able to vote in the poll because other is not an option. I don't think any of Watson Mayfield or Brissett start week 1 and I suspect such an option would win the poll.

Deshaun Watson Met With David Culley, Refuses To Play For Texans (2/25/21)

Just prior to all the lawsuits being filed, Watson told the HC he was done playing for the Texans. At OTAs / minicamp / training camp, he was listed as 4th string QB and did very little other than stretch and individual workouts. He showed up to be able to say he showed up, but he did not practice with the team on the field. At the time, owner Cal McNair said Watson would remain a Texan, but later came off that stance and sought to trade him. However, by then the lawsuit circus had come to town. Watson was content to do nothing, and since the Texans opted to pay him his full salary, Watson just blended into the background all season. On the boards, there were various discussions on why the Texans caved and opted to pay him.

Technically, as you indicated, HOU listed him as not playing for football reasons, but it started as Watson saying he was done with the team. It essentially amounted to the same outcome as if he were officially placed on the exempt list (paid leave). Given that he received full pay (with no fines or team suspensions), there is no case to be made for him getting credit for "time served."

a refusal to play = no pay. can we drop that already?
It was a mutual decision between him and the team. He did not want to play for the team and the team did not want him on the field due to his situation. He was fully paid to sit and he happily did so.

of course. the team had options, they just didnt like them (and probably rightfully so)... but in the end, the team COULD have made him surrender his pay if he refused to play. they could have traded him for less than they got...

but it wasn't a 1-way refusal to play. obviously.

I would like to know who the other option would be. Thanks in advance!
Not necessarily Jimmy G, but something like that. Someone else may be brought in regardless, but not until after Watson's suspension length is announced. Depending on length that someone may not be added until September too. Give Dobbs reps for an opportunity at the (short term?) backup role.

Ok . . . so who is your "other" selection?
The field. But I would say either of Jimmy G or some other piece in a trade for Mayfield. I'm not going to be surprised if it is Brissett week 1 but I would vote field. And definitely not Baker or Watson but those should obv be in the poll.

Sign Cam Newton(both Brisset and Dobbs can probably be useful too) and run the wishbone with Chubb/Hunt/Johnson, maybe get some jet sweep action with Schwartz and Felton. I kid, but honestly, I think that would probably be pretty effective, what defense in 2022 is built to stop it personnel wise?

ETA: Plus you'd get frequent 1-1 coverage on Cooper.
