Who thinks "America's team" are the Pittsburgh Steelers? (2 Viewers)

It cracks me up that every year some team tries to steal the "America's Team" nickname from the Cowboys. The Giants fans wanted it after 911The Saints fans wanted it after KatrinaThe patriots have made claims to it as well as the Packers.and now the Steelers....Why not come up with a new nickname instead of always trying to steal the Cowboys nickname?I have never understood why that annoys so many people.
Dude, nobody wants it. It is all marketing BS and who ever is dumb enough to buy in is ......................."America's Team" Enjoy!

I've been to many bars across the east coast and as far inland as the Mississippi. Pittsburgh fans are usually the biggest group of non home team fans at the sports bars I have visited on Sundays. This is coming from a Giants fan.

I'm a Skins fan. I think we have very good fans, probably top 10 in the league.

But I'd say the Raiders, Packers, and Steelers have the best fans. They are with the team through thick and thin. They'll travel to games. And unlike Cowboy fan, they actually understand the game too.

For what it's worth, the Raiders have sold about twice as much merchandise in the last 10 years as any other team. And other than 2 years of Moss, they don't have a single star I can remember. So that counts for something.

Does this make any of them "America's Team"? Heck the Boys can have that monniker if they want. The Atlanta Braves and Notre Dame have it too. Just like those teams, more people hate them than like em, so it's nothing to brag about.

Here is my take (opinionated):

Steeler's/Packers fans = greatest % of "true/passionate" NFL football fans around the country are most likely Steelers or Packers fans. By "true" I mean people who actually watch games on Sundays and other night games whenever possible and also try their best to get tickets for NFL games, because they love the game of NFL football and the Steelers and Packers just so happen to be their favorite team for whatever number of reasons

Cowboy's fans = at the nation level the "true fans" are in fact up at the levels with Steelers/Packers fans, but the Cowboys also bring in a huge poser crowd because of their flash and pompous marketing style (beutiful cheerleaders, the "star", prima dona players, prima dona owner...Texas as the biggest state in the lower 48 etc). As far as world marketing of US football, naturally a clueless foreigner is going to latch on to "Cowboys" over any other NFL team because that is primarily representative of everything "cool" and tough about the U.S.....the "John Wayne" effect so to speak. Unfortunately Jerry Jones and George Bush give us more of a "boss hog" visualization for our country! :-)

How many 10 year old boys around the country whom probably watch an NFL game bought a #21 jersey when Dion Sanders was playing because he was "Prime Time"? How many 13-15 year old teeny-bopper bimbo's are currently walking around their middle school or high schools wearing Romo jersey's simply because he's cute and dated Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson, without ever sitting down and actually watching a single 3 hour football game in their life? There is your answer why your marketing/merchandise is always so high for Cowboy's gear. Throw in a significantly more enormous population base in Texas than either Wisconsin or Western PA/appalacia regions (even including the migrants of people out of western PA due to hard times in the 80's)....and that explains how the Cowboys are up there at/near the top.

Cowboys have the most "fans."

Steelers have the most FANS.

The Cowboys can have the title of "America's Team." Seems appropriate that a team known for having an egomaniac at the helm and a roster full of drug addicts, criminals, and assorted other malcontents would be the flagship franchise for 2008 America. Me, I'll stick to a team full (for the most part) of people I can get behind. Family owned, fans who stick together and know the game, and players you can be proud of. I can go watch the Steelers play in any stadium nationwide and have 10,000+ of my brothers there swinging that towel with me.

A perfect example of the difference between Steelers fans and Cowboys fans. I was in Vegas in December of '01 and the Steelers game was on at 10:00 AM. I watched the game from the sports book at MGM Grand, but they had reserved all the really good plush booth tables around the sports book for big players (they've since shrunk the book to near nothing, but people who used to go there earlier this decade know what I mean.) After the game was over, I was standing there with my soon-to-be-wife when a dude taps me on the shoulder. He sees my Ward jersey and says he's got a table and has to leave, but he was waiting for a Steeler fan to give it to. He brings us over and we sit down.. he tells the waitress to bring us whatever we want for the rest of the day and put it on his tab. As he's about to leave and we're thanking him profusely, my buddy rolls up with a Cowboys shirt on. The guy tells the waitress that if she sees him sitting with us, we're cut off. We laugh, and I look at him, and he's dead serious. He eventually leaves and we make my buddy stand there rather than sit down so we don't lose our tab. After the first quarter of the 4:00 (1:00 Vegas time) Cowboys game, a group of Cowboys fans at another table sees him standing there and invite him to sit with them. They're all drinking white wine (I'm not making this up.) So, he says goodbye to us and goes to sit with them. About 1/2 hour later, I look over and he's there by himself. Turns out the Cowboys fans all left to walk down to Caesar's to see the Escape from Atlantis 3-D movie.

That's the difference between Steeler fans and Cowboys fans. Steeler fans give their brethren unlimited free drinks just for being Steelers fans, but will not extend that courtesy to non-Steeler fans. Cowboys fans leave in the second quarter of their team's games to go watch a movie.

Packer fan is most overrated fan base ever. These 'loyal' fans are as big on bandwagon and jumping on a winner as any other team. Living in Wisconsin during the 3 titles in 4 years in the mid 90s run for the Cowboys, there were more COWBOYS gear at school than Packer gear. Jackets, jerseys, hats, whatever. Of course these 'loyal' fans had Packer jackets/gear just a year after the Cowboys run since the Packers won it all and of course they argued how they were always Packer fans and for how long. Known very few Steeler fans overall except for the time I lived in Ohio so I certainly don't think they are 'Americas Team' if anyone should have that nickname as stupid as it is.

You supported my point exactly. School kids your talking about...

I believe the true measure of the quality of a fanbase can be measured during the lean years rather than the good ones. I'll always be indebted to the Steelers (and Ralph Wilson) for going to bat for the Browns during the move; however, I wonder how many would jump off of the bandwagon if they fell upon some hard times.

Although many fellow Browns fans I know act like battered women, I'm proud of this fan base and would put it up against anyone calling themselves America's Team or some nation.
:goodposting: Wiki:

The most prominent organization of Browns fans is the Browns Backers Worldwide (BBW). The organization has approximately 93,100 members and is considered the largest sports-fan organization in the USA. Browns Backers clubs can be found in every major city in the United States, and in a number of military bases throughout the world, with the largest club being in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, the organization has a sizable foreign presence in places as far away as Egypt, Australia, Japan, and Sri Lanka.

Love them or hate them, Dallas is America's team (most popular team...whatever). That's just how it is...& that's likely how it will always be.

A friend of mine was in the military stationed at Ft. Huachuca in AZ back in the mid 1990's (the middle of the Dallas 90's dynasty) when Dallas played Pitt in the Superbowl out in Phoenix. Him and his Army buddies didn't go to the Superbowl but spent the weekend partying up in Phoenix. He approximated about 2/3 Steeler fans compared to approximately 1/3 Cowboy fans in town. Surprising being that most of AZ is Cowboy country and travel distance even for Texan's is way less than Pittsburgh or Pittsburgh transplants living elsewhere. There could have been alot of weathy "neutral" NFL fans just in town routing for the Steelers as the underdog that game as well. Who knows.

Steeler fan not smart enough to come up with something. They would rather steal ummmmmmmmmm "borrow" nicknames from the Raiders and Boys
Not sure who thinks the Steelers are "Americas Team". The OP made the claim and I think its a stupid ### nickname. "Steeler Nation" sounds alot better to me  :towelwave: :towelwave:
The only "nation" is the Raider Nation.Seriously we Pittsburgh fans have to stop this nonsense.
Actually the first use of it is documented on NFL films... as Steeler Nation in like 1973.A journalist did a report before "nation" was a trendy phrase, it was used in a literal sense... and talked about the Steeler Nation.
