Who's earning their keep? (1 Viewer)

Reading through Jeff P's post about stealing $$ got me to thinking about how many big name off-season acquisitions really live up to the hype. Some guys are dreadful (deangelo hall), some guys are good but not difference makers (Asante Samuel), and some guys earn every penny (michael turner).

So lets hear it for the best and worst of the 2008 offseason moves, rank them and add to them if you think of people i left out

best:

turner

favre

jared allen (i had hardly heard his name but he has 8 sacks and 2 safeties - maybe someone can fill me in on the details)

kris jenkins

worst:

pacman

hall

troy williamson

javon walker

i'd also like to hear about some unsung signings like frerotte and dominic rhodes that didn't make a huge splash but have been huge parts of their teams success.

Allen is actually having a down season statistically in every category except for sacks - at least compared to what became his norm while in KC. Maybe some Minny homers can chime in about how big his impact has been in terms of the intangibles.

His second safety of the season was legit, but his first one occurred when the QB stepped out of the back of the endzone and Allen was the closest guy to him. Not that he wasn't applying a little bit of pressure, but it was a bit cheap - kind of a right place right time kind of thing.

Lorenzo Neal and Fabian Washington have helped out the Ravens this season. Washington wasn't a free agent signing though. He was acquired in a trade from the Raiders.

The Colts wish that they still had Jake Scott on their offensive line. Their loss is the Titans gain.

Bernard Berrian has had a pretty good season playing on a team with no qb.

I don't have stats, but was listening to someone make a case on Sirius that Pacman was having a decent, but not great, year, prior to suspension #143. So, not sure if you're taking the suspension into account, or just based on performance.

Some of these guys you've mentioned were trades (Allen, Troy Williamson, Pacman Jones, Favre), not free agent acquisitions (not that I think this takes away from the discussion however).Allen led the lead in sacks last year, not that I knew much about him either, him being a Chief. He played against Green Bay with a separated shoulder and really helped keep the pressure on Rodgers all game, despite his injury. Overall, great play from Allen that has opened up the sack #'s for Kevin and Pat Williams because they are not seeing as consistent amount of double teams this year because he is drawing more attention. He's also had opposing blockers flagged for holding several times this year.

He's been held down a few games though, but I am real happy with the trade.

In recent years (as the thread title says), the two that stick out in my mind are Drew Brees and Charles Woodson.

The group of Jets mentioned have all risen to the occasion. I would throw Calvin Pace in there as someone who has lived up to billing. There free agency/trades (not including draft) for '08 could be one of the best ever as far as delivering. Honestly, it is almost flawless...

sorry for the confusing thread -

free agents and trades are fair game for discussion. i started thinking about free agents, but then realized most of the big ones were trades this year. also chime in about previous years.

a lot was made about faneca and woody in the offseason. jones has obviously been a lot better from a fantasy perspective - is pass protection a lot better too?

is there a rb or wr other than turner that comes to mind?

Randy Moss was a huge steal for a 4th round pick...Vikings got Chester Taylor a few years back and though he's a #2 he's got some sick moves (spun some guy out of his shoes changed directions and scored a TD on the Vikes 1st possession on Sunday).

Not sure how pacman was a disappointment. He held down the fort while Newman was injured, and his play was more than serviceable. The suspension actually helps his case as the Cowboys now get a 5th round pick back.So in sum, the Cowboys got 6 games of above average corner play for the difference between a 4th round pick and a 5th. Not to mention any games he plays starting in week 14.Hardly one of the worst moves of the offseason. Then again, you didn't know who Jared Allen was. :goodposting:

Chad Pennington. That pickup is the sole reason that Miami is competing for a playoff spot. Without him, that franchise would be struggling to win one game.

Jeff Faine has been absolutely awesome for the Bucs. I think it was Dr. Z who had him midseason first-team all-pro.

i meant i hadn't heard his name much this year and wanted details on how he's played for the vikes. i'll agree that you can't classify the move as bad because jerry jones covered his ### well. but i'll stand by pacman being a disappointment. you don't make a trade for guy that you think could be a star, then be satisfied that he gave you six "above average" games. I'll also question whether his play was indeed above average since they cowboys entire secondary was pathetic in the beginning of the year.

Tony Richardson did a great job in K.C., did a great job for Minnesota, and is doing well in NY on the Jets this year. He's getting up there in years but he's still plowing ahead and making holes. Each team he's played on has had a great running game.

Alot of guys like Williamson aren't really getting paid that much so.. it's really a problem.

But who I think is def earning their keep

Kris Jenkins

Shaun Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers (not a free agent but his new contract)

Turner

Faneca

Warrick Dunn (leading the team, wasn't signed for that role)

Gibril Wilson

Vilma

Babe Ruth - quite possibly the best trade of all time.

As for football, I'll say Favre. ATL gave him up after only 4 pass attempts as a rookie. For the next 16 years, he averaged 3853 passing yards and 28 TD's. And during that time, no ATL QB topped those numbers even in a single season, let alone 16 straight.

In recent years (as the thread title says), the two that stick out in my mind are Drew Brees and Charles Woodson.
 I would also add Patrick Kerney for Seattle last year. This year, the whole team has struggled with injuries...and Kerney is out.

Trade - Carolina gets Chris Harris SS for a 2008 5th round draft pick from Chicago.

I'd add Jim Lehnard to the Ravens list, though he wasn't high-priced. Very solid fill-in for Landry & it a great ST player on top of that.
