OK so sure, there's Teddy, Johnny Football, Carr, and Bortles as possibilities.

There's some backups in Ryan Mallett, J.Garropallo, Zach Mettenberger, Mike Glennon, Nassib, Chase Daniel,
Logan Thomas, Brock Osweiler.

And couple of guys coming out of college in 2015 in Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Brett Hundley, Bryce Petty, Connor Cook

Anyone else? Who do you think is poised to become a quality NFL Fantasy QB in 2016?

Good topic. My guess is Johnny Football. He has the big time WR in Gordon, can run the football, and seems like the type of guy who would gladly play the role of StatWhore if given the chance. Plus, he's pretty darn good.

 
Bortles, if they get him a new offensive line in the offseason. If they welcome Blackmon back, his receiving corps will be silly.

 
Assuming we're meant to ignore more obvious candidates, I'll throw in Logan Thomas as a great upside guy. Journeyman backups are not going to cut it forever in zona and they'll eventually give him a whirl. Balanced team with some real receiving talent when healthy, and LT has elite measurables at 6"6 with a 4.54 40-time

I see what you're saying but height and speed are pretty low on the scale of important measurables when it comes to a QB.

As previously stated, Johnny Football could have short spurts of 2012 RG3 type production though I doubt he makes it as a long term NFL QB. Mettenberger impressed from a fantasy perspective last week. If Sanchez maintains his job in Phili he will rack up easy fantasy points in that offense, but obviously Foles is the favorite to regain the job when he heals up. Brock Osweiler might be pretty good, he was a second round pick and being eased in behind Peyton Manning should only help. Brett Hundley and Connor Cook are long shots but should be on that list as well.

 
It seems that players like Brees, Rodgers, and Luck come along once every 3-4 years. That being the case, I'd bet against any given young player reaching that level, even if he's a projected elite prospect. I wouldn't back Bortles, Bridgewater, or Manziel to ever reach that level. I probably like Bortles most out of that group, but he needs to improve by leaps and bounds in future seasons to be considered a great QB. In terms of value-per-cost, I would take a cheap punt on Garoppolo.

In terms of the college guys, I watch a lot of Pac-12 ball and I think Mariota is overrated as an NFL prospect. Many of his big plays are made by exploiting his running ability on the edges, which won't be nearly as effective in the NFL. He throws in a spread offense to wide open receivers. Not much of what he does fits what he'll need to do in the NFL to be more than a flash in the pan, which is why I'm very skeptical of him. You can apply all that and then some to Hundley, who is just a worse Mariota.

The guy I want to see more of is Garrett Grayson from Colorado State. He has been playing insanely well this year, with a 64.8% completion percentage, 9.79 yards per attempt average, and 32 TDs against just 6 INTs. I have not watched him enough to have a concrete opinion yet, but he looks to be a real athlete with an overall game that's pretty similar to Garoppolo's. I want to see where he gets drafted and how the scouts evaluate him. He may just be another David Fales day three type of guy, but he's the college QB from this draft that I'm most eager to learn more about right now.

I wonder about Osweiler. There's the possibility of an Aaron Rodgers type of situation. However, Brock's not getting any younger and Peyton has a year or two left. How much time would he have to prove himself if he assumed the starting role?

What about Carr? The few times I've seen him, I saw accuracy, timing and receiver anticipation. Some of the intangibles. Does he need better weapons before we'll know if he can be elite?

I actually like watching Carr for some odd reason, but he's a complete mess as well. Even if he was to get it going, he plays for the dumbest franchise in the NFL. He's not a good bet at all.

I would seriously buy a PPV to see who can throw the ball the farthest between him, Big Ben, Cutler, Mallett, Newton, Kaepernick, Stafford and Flacco. I'm probably forgetting someone. Vick probably doesn't have the arm he had a few years ago.

 
I always thought Osweiler was a Jekkyl and Hyde at ASU. I think he's Derek Anderson+, not another Luck/Rodgers.

He was really green when he left school though. Could have some latent upside based on that.

 
It's kind of interesting how the elite QB landscape is changing. In a couple years we might be looking at only two elite QB1 in the league. Luck and Rodgers. It makes them even more valuable in 6 point passing TD leagues.

I don't see any coming up but no one thought Brady was going to be elite so maybe there's one coming.

You have to watch out for these MWC type of QB that face weak competition every week. I never heard of this guy until you mentioned him, so I checked out his numbers vs winning teams. Pretty clear drop off in production when you aren't playing Wyoming

Gms Comp Y/A A/TD A/INT 5 59.9 7.7 19.3 42.4 When he stepped up to face bigger, better competition in teams like BC and Boise St. he really struggled. Jimmy Garroppolo vs superior competition on the other hand...

 
One thing is, you're not going to know who is elite until year three. IIRC, Luck had a middling deep ball percentage, accuracy rating, and NY/A for the first two years compared to the elites. Michael Salfino was even pointing out this year that his AY/A was low, though it certainly isn't now.

Regardless, this isn't to bag on Luck, who is elite. It's just predicting this stuff from a guy's first year is tough.

 
Fantasy wise Bortles and Mariota seem like the only two that could be consistently in the top 5, but I think it is a long shot. Carr reminds me of Romo for fantasy purposes. A low end qb 1 and every now and again you will get a top 5 season out of him.

 
I think the guy that could follows Brady's path for fantasy would be Wilson. Even that is a very long shot

If I need a guy next year, I probably look at a rookie coming in and find the situation that lines up best (Rams....) or if I really swing for the fences I go with RG III just because he might be fixable in the offseason and the legs gets points in my leagues.

If I can wait a year, Bortles and Carr can both play well in this league.

If we are talking any longer than that, I think Jimmy G. will be a Rivers/Brees type of producer when it is his time.

 
I think it might be Tannehill. He's close. He's gotten better each season. He's got a strong supporting cast and his team is moving in the right direction. Throw one more stud on the team at wideout or RB and you've got something.

 
I don't know who it is, but I do know that in six-point pass TD leagues, this is a very important question. Once again, the narrowed field in my long-time 6 pass TD league is full of elite QBs. 80% this year (4/5). Luck, Rodgers, Manning, Brady.

So please carry on exploring who the next big dog might be.

I'll say the next Eagles QB if Chip Kelly remains there and their OL can regain health.

 
The college ranks are not helping matters. There is a serious lack of NFL style offenses in college now. When these 'read option' and 'drop back and run' guys get to the NFL, they are now pretty much useless. For the foreseeable future, there will not be a class even 1/2 as good as the 83 QB class. Now a draft class is lucky if it produces 1 NFL caliber QB.

 
I see something special in Carr's arm talent. But I feared before the draft and certainly still do that Carr's upside is of the Jeff George and Jay Cutler ilk. He needs stronger vertical weapons and OL[SIZE=14.3999996185303px] to succeed and he may not get that anytime soon[/SIZE]. And even then he may have turnover issues. But in terms of physical ability, I think he was the best of the last draft class after seeing them in the league this year. I'm excited to see what Reggie Mac can do in terms of helping him in the next drafts and FA. Raiders have a ton of cap space if an elite WR1 or OL goes free.

Pretty much agree with all of this. I could see Kyle Shanahan running something similar to what he did with RG3 with probably only 60-70% as many designed runs but a better offensive line and force feeding Gordon the way they did with Garcon. Interested to see how well Manziel does running the ball in the NFL, he does not have the same straight line speed that rookie RG3 had but IMO he may be more elusive and a better runner. Running for 500+ yards and 160ish targets to Gordon is a great start.

Also agree that whoever ends up starting in the future in Chip Kelly's offense is a good bet. As a Skins fan I don't really want it to happen but I think RG3 there could be really big, I know I've seen that speculated some lately.

 
Among guys currently playing, and already at a relatively high level, I think Wilson is the most likely to join the elite tier (assuming that Luck is already there).

Tannehill is definitely making big strides, but unless he can start throwing the ball downfield, his fantasy upside is going to be limited. Takes too many throws now to get the offense down the field, and it requires a lot of sustained drives.
