Why Didn't the Patriots play for the Tie (with 3 time outs left&#3 (1 Viewer)

I was shocked that the Patriots didn't try a more systematic approach to move the ball 40 or so yards to try to get a FG to tie.

Instead Brady started throwing bombs, when the long ball wasn't working for the whole game. A few dink and dunks to Welker/Moss/Faulk (which WERE working the whole game) would have gotten them closer and a chance at a FG.

Did Belichick give up? Try to win it all in one play?

I think after the sack they did not have much choice but go for the bomb. They basically only had two plays left before they had to kick a field goal.

Didn't the hail mary's come after the sack on 2nd down? That sack was HUGE. I agree that the Pats should have been throwing underneath though. I was shocked to see them lose 10 yards on the first 2 downs.

The Pats ego is what kept them from kicking. They've been doing it all year. Glad to see it came back to bite them in the ### finally.

I was actually hoping the Giants would kick a field goal or go for another TD with 1 second left on the clock at the end of the game. That would have been sweet. Assuming it wasn't blocked/picked off for a TD.

If they didn't trust their kicker enough to attempt a 48 yarder earlier in the game (instead they went for it on 4th and 13, IIRC), why would they do it then? Brady went for Moss on both bombs, both times in multiple coverage. It was plainly evident they were attempting to either win it all on one play or get a pass interference.

Yes, but the first one (on third down) Moss was behind both defenders by a step. It is a pass Moss regularly caught in his glory days. C-Pepp would just fling it up there and Moss would get it.

Was actually thinking that Brady should try that other Culpepper special, the deliberately underthrown ball. Give Moss a chance to outjump the defenders.

Moss was wide open on 1st and second down -- Brady totally under threw him both times ! How is thats Moss's fault ? On first down Moss has his man beat by 3 yards and Brady didn't even get it close. on 3rd Moss on had a 1/2 a step but Bradys pass was better but still short.

that ball wasn't thrown high enough to be a jump ball -- on first down he was WIDE oipen Brady just made a awful throw.

I don't think he was saying it was Moss's fault.

it was something like a 70 yard pass attempt... can't really fault brady for not hitting him in stride.

Like has been said, after the sack, they had no choice but to throw deep. And at least they gave themselves a shot by throwing deep to Moss twice. That was their best bet, and they gave it two shots at the end.

Yes, if only Brady could have thrown it 80 yards in the air........

Jeff George would've.

As I pointed out in the game thread, it was a shame that Welker got injured, had to go to the bathroom, had to take a phonecall, etc and thus wasn't available on those last plays. :blackdot:

On that one hail mary (3rd down?), I think Moss catches it if he goes up high for it. Instead, he short-arms it and allows the defender to out-jump him.
