Why do bagel stores use so much cream cheese? (1 Viewer)

Was given cream cheese instead of the butter I asked for on my bagel this morning :X

I hate when cream cheese and butter are too close in color and you can't tell :(

On the plus side replacement bagel was right out of the oven

3 things that irk me:

1) asking for a bagel toasted - a real bagel doesnt need this - save that for the frozen supermarket ones.

2) when people ask for the bagel scooped out - barbarous!

3) Donut/muffin flavors for a bagel - just get a blueberry donut/muffin since that is obviously what you really wanted.

Butter and cream cheese aren’t even close in color.

Did you make this morning bagel yourself?

Always get a toasted sesame seed bagel with cream cheese and jelly.

Having a nice crunch and some of the cream cheese melting adds some texture to the taste.

I’ll get a 6 cheese toasted but otherwise usually opt for normal

is #2 really a thing?

When they make you a bagel with cream cheese, why so much of it?

Does anyone actually enjoy eating fistfuls of cream cheese? Furthermore,  it isn’t very cost effective for a bagel store.

Even when you ask for just a schmear, still a mountain of the stuff.
Great call.  Never understood this.

I was at the airport last week for a business trip. A guy sat across from me with a bagel topped with a fake egg circle thing, and then cream cheese was caked on top of that. It was disgusting.

I love fried egg sandwiches and I love cream cheese - when I picture them together like that on a sandwich, I do get a little queasy.
Plain bagel toasted with egg and cream cheese  is a staple in our household.  Egg should be over medium so when you take the first bite or cut the sandwich in half the yoke spills out a little.

Can we talk about bagel inventory while we are at it?

Always dozens of specialty bagels left at eod. No plain left. No i dont want a blueberry streusel bagel and apparently neither did anybody else.

Jewish Deli Rule, I think.

I was in Aspen, and this wannabe Jewish deli opened.  They had normal-sized deli sandwiches for affordable prices, I was stoked.  A Jewish friend of mine said the place was dead in the water, no chance.  He told me that at a proper deli, you're going to pay a lot for a sandwich but, "It's gonna be as big as my head.   Charge me whatever you want, but give me a huge sandwich!"

The deli didn't last three months, and every trip to Katz's since, I am reminded of my friend's explanation.

I know a lot of bagel places you are talking about aren't even a little bit Jewish, but maybe it's just tradition from their Jewish deli roots.

I enjoy a hefty smear
I am pretty sure this is an euphemism for something that is not FBG approved.  Don't you know they are watching? and Yes, while I don't get a bagel with cream cheese very often, when I do, the more cream cheese the better..........

That sounds awful
No kidding.  I mean, I LOVE eggs, especially on a bagel.  Having a fresh, runny egg with melted cheese on a bagel is heaven.  I similarly LOVE bagels with loads of cream cheese.

I would never consider putting the 2 together and don't ever want to try.

Btw, this is something I used to eat when I was a kid and haven't really seen it around.  When I make it for my kids they absolutely love it and it brings back memories for me.  You could probably do this with most any cheese, but the 2 I've done it with are Muenster (the original way I'd have it) or fresh mozzarella.

Warm/toast your bagel to your liking.  Add as much cream cheese as you like (the more the better for me).  Then stick a slice of Muenster cheese (or fresh mozzarella) and put it in the toaster oven on broil for 2-3 minutes until the cheese on top is melted.  It is absolute heaven to eat.  The cream cheese softens up just a bit but it's all contained under the melted cheese on top.

Oh, I completely agree. When I was a kid my aunt ordered me one while we were visiting some bagel shop in Chicago and it was so ####### phenomenal that I’ve been eating them ever sense. Over the years a lot of my friends thought the same way as you do and now they all eat them.

But yeah, this is something I normally would think would be gross.

Depends on the place - some places have butter that is basically off-white in color - and they scoop it out of those unlabeled tubs.

It's an unpleasant surprise when it happens.

I agree, although, I did once try a combo of scallion cream cheese and bacon - it wasn't bad, but it has never earned a spot in my rotation.

The idea of an egg with creamcheese sounds vile........... but for all those raving about it I'll have to try it.......
Yeah, it can't really be as bad as it sounds anyway, can it? I mean, egg on bagel sandwich is delicious with cheeses like cheddar or Swiss or with butter, so why does cream cheese sound vile to us?  When I think about it, it's probably pretty good.

I also never thought I'd like green olives cream cheese, but that's some good stuff.

"The food is terrible. And the portions are too small!"

You are missing out.  This is seriously one of my favorite breakfasts.  Onion bagel open faced with cream cheese, then top each half with an over easy egg.  If I'm feeling frisky I'll add some hot-smoked salmon to the mix.

Try my cream cheese and cheese recipe above and maybe I'll give this a shot.

I'm game.  How much do you broil it?  Just until melted or until it gets crispy?  I like to occasionally put a little cheese on sourdough, broil it, spread it in a thin even layer once it's melted and then broil it again until it gets crispy.  Having a crispy cracker of broiled cheese on top of molten cream cheese sounds like an interesting idea.

I do it just until the cheese is melted and see a couple brown spots.  I don't like it crispy because then it gets a burnt taste.  But, that's just personal preference and you can try either one.

The key is to remove it before it is crispy, and when it cools for a minute it crisps up without browning/burning

Or grape popsicles??????
The grape popsicles are the ones everyone leaves in the box.  When I grew up we'd know it was time to get more popsicles when the freezer had 2 or 3 open boxes but all of them were grape.  Cinnamon raisin bagels, oatmeal raisin cookies, grape popsicles, all fall in the same category.

the grape always went first at our house.

While we're here... y'all prefer the "whipped" cream cheese or the old standby?
Whipped Honey Walnut with a Cinnamon Crunch bagel is awesome. Otherwise, old standby is the go to.

ETA: Whipped Honey Walnut with Cinnamon Crunch is really like a dessert more than breakfast... but that doesn't stop me from pounding one when someone brings bagels into the office.

The rate of grape popsicle consumption in our house has always aligned with that of other standard flavors.

Yes, that's why I often for the bialy- to get that crisp crunch texture.

The natural evolution of all this is to put the popsicle on the bagel.  I would suggest a creamsicle...  HTH

For me, bagels should be normal or savory.  Adding blueberries or cinnamon is bull####.  It's a vessel for cream cheese or a sandwich...period.
