Why do People Like Dr. Who? (1 Viewer)

This is a serious question. Why do people enjoy this?

Some creepy old man convinces a teenage girl to go traveling in his phonebooth with him and they go do random bull#### while experiencing really creepy sexual tension. The continuity makes no sense, people will talk about stuff that happened in previous episodes and there will be recurring characters but then when a large scale alien invasion happens apparently everyone has completely forgotten about it by the next episode. They seem to make up arbitrary and completely nonsensical rules for science or time travel that will cause the universe to implode or something but then they'll be broken and ignored an episode later with no consequences. The sound design is terrible with an incredibly simplistic and transparently manipulative score and the whole thing looks like it was shot and directed by college freshmen, poor lighting and everything.

Why do people like this? Is it the accents? is it pedophilia? I honestly don't understand why this is so popular. help.

 
Idk its a terrible show. British shows are either very funny or not funny at all. Like red dwarf. I have no idea why red dwarf is popular too

 
I am a fan of the 1974-1981 era when Tom Baker was Doctor Who. I also do not love the new stuff and don't get into it as much. The older is more like Star Wars in '77 where there is not much CGI if any, lot of sets, models, make up, real special effects and that makes a big difference.

Robots of Death will always be my favorite and I believe even folks who have never seen Dr Who would enjoy this miniseries they did back then. It is spread over about 4 different episodes cut up on youtube. If someone doesn't care for this particular episode, something wrong with them IMO, this is popcorn Sci-Fi at its best IMHO.

Transdimensional Engineering is explained around the 3:30-4:00 mark. Also Lela was not a teenager and I had a crush on her when I was 7-8 years old, as much a crush as you are gonna have. Her outfit is sexy.

Well it was pretty edgy in 1974. Do you hate Star Trek in the 60s?

A well educated man who time travels and lives to be ancient, the scarf down to his knees, the big hair, it all worked back then and I think you are not even giving the premise a chance. And there was none of this pedophilia you are hinting at, all the women were at least early to mid 20s until more recently as they went younger to try and draw in younger viewers. They lost a lot of us older viewers in the process.

Enjoy ripping Dr Who all you like but it has a rich history and your opinion will not change much of that. Good Day Sir.

All that's missing is this.

 
I like the older Dr. Who. But it has always been campy. And you have to remember the Brit audience is much different than the American audience. Kids in Britain actually think, or did think back in the day, that Dr Who was a scary show. We have Sesame Street episodes that are scarier. Still I enjoyed the show back then but I haven't watched in years so I can't comment on new doctors.

Oh and pretty much every science fiction show has played fast and loose with the science tweaking it where necessary.

 
It's going to be hard to answer why people enjoy any show that has lasted 50 years. Doctor Who has felt like a lot of different shows over the year. For instance, "classic" Who (before the Eccleston reboot of the show) features absolutely no sexual tension between the Doctor and any of his companions. For better or worse, we have Russell Davies to thank for that, and many fans hate Rose for exactly that reason.

To address some specific criticisms, it's certainly true that continuity in the Who-verse can be pretty hit or miss. That seems pretty par for the course for any time travel show (to quote Austin Powers II "don't YOU think about it too hard either!"). At some point, you have to kind of commit to the plot making emotional sense rather than logical sense. It's a fair criticism of Moffatt era Who that this propensity to slack continuity has grown to a distracting level. I still think that modern Who has considerable charms. Both David Tennant and Matt Smith were very engaging personalities. I think the Doctor can be a compelling character, particularly to the extent that he's in love with humanity. He has a very positive view of humans and the show is, for lack of a better word, humanity affirming.

And the very best episodes, like Blink, The Doctor's Wife, or the Girl in the Fireplace, are great, creepy little one-off pieces of science fiction.

Reasons why people like Dr. Who:

  • Cool theme song
  • It's science fiction. Here are some other cool science fiction shows - Twilight Zone and Star Trek I. People love SciFi it turns out; there's even a whole network channel devoted to it. Millions and millions of books sold, one single tv show permanently dedicated to scifi.
  • It was BBC, it's a Brit export. Accents and what not.
  • The girls. Someone mentioned Leila. Well there was also this redheaded knockout - Kate Gillan. Love that girl. Just put her on screen I don't care, she's awesome.
  • The Tardis - lots to like here, it's like the Superman phone booth, but inside it's like the Enterprise.
  • Mystery. There's a lot of Sherlock Holmes influence in these shows, especially the Tom Baker era.
  • The campy special effects. You should be laughing and enjoying and using your imagination. not be Mr. Stuffshirt and shout "it's fake!" Go with it.
  • History - it travels through time.
  • Robots. Lots of human, modern technology interactions here, very relatable to a modern world.
  • The main character changes. One age group gets tired of it, another age group latches on.
  • Continuity. Someow every show is connected, from back in the early 60s to now. People who are into shows love this. TV producers dream of creating shows that draw in tv nerd geeks who... well get really into shows.
Oh, yeah this thread needs a poll.

Wife and 14 y.o. daughter like it. Asked my wife why she likes it and she says because its about time travel and she likes things about time travel.

Sure, still a good show but it misses Russell Davies. A lot of the more recent episodes seem to be faster paced but difficult to follow.

 
Because it's fun.

And frankly, that's all the explanation you, or anyone, needs. If you don't think it's fun, that's fine. Perfectly valid. But to throw words like pedophilia at it is highly offensive. If you don't like it, don't ####### watch it.

Came in here to post the same thing.

A buddy of mine told me this was the funniest show ever. I actually got through 2 seasons of it - horrible all the way. My 6yo thought it was hilarious, that's the only thing that kept me going.

Well, yes.

One of the core premises of the show is that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. The sonic screwdriver, which can do basically anything the plot requires of it, is the most visible example of that. If you find yourself annoyed by all the arbitrary rules that get broken from episode to episode, imagine yourself trying to explain to a bronze age goatherd why your satellite TV goes out in some rainstorms, but works fine in others. They'd never understand, just like you'll never understand why Dr Who can change history with no adverse effects in some episodes, but tears a hole in the universe when he does it in others.

It's not the sort of show where you're supposed to logic your way through it and guess the ending before it happens. You just have fun and enjoy the story.

I remember two things from Dr. Who: The Daleks (Exterminate!).

And one with giant rats in the sewers, and a homicidal chinese ventriloquist doll. There are no Sesame Street episodes scarier than giant rats, and chinese ventriloquist dolls armed with knives. :shock:

Its the purest form of sci-fi. Anything you can dream up is possible. Time travel, space travel, alien life forms, frightening time calamities. Its a little kids wildest imagination come to life.

Also the ####### Angels are terrifying.

I cant believe even a 6yo would find it funny

Ive never watched a full episode but have watched several videos of its funniest moments on youtube......I didnt even crack a smile

Maybe that is your fantasy but mines involves Jessica Alba dressed up as my doctor and I can't afford to pay for the visit so we work something out.

Haven't watched Dr. Who in years. Tom Baker will always be the Dr. Who for me. But if both Scoresman and DSP don't like it, maybe I should start watching again.

They actually poke fun at this in their Day of the Doctor special. John Hurt asks Matt Smith if the romantic stuff happens more often because he's not familiar with it. He just says it does start to show up more often.

I certainly don't enjoy it because it is a british show. I can't stand most british shows because of the accents.

If I ever get to a point where I'm on my couch watching tv and I catch myself thinking, "Well the sound design for this show is just ####### terrible! The score is incredibly simplistic and transparently manipulative!!!" ...I'd probably shoot myself.

Its story is the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism.

And for 50+ years now people somewhere have held onto that and tune in.
