not really. there are some things out there that are objectively worse than their alternatives. take subway sandwiches for example. you're never going to convince anyone that a subway sandwich is better than a sandwich at a real deli, yet lo and behold right across the street from where i work, there's a subway next door to an an awesome italian deli which btw is also cheaper, and guess which one has the longer line. people in general are stupid, plain and simple.

its not about my preferences. there are plenty of other examples of stuff where there is more than one acceptable option that may not match with my preferences, but you're not gonna convince a sane poerson that subway or chipotle is better than the real thing, especially when the real thing is right next door, cheaper, and has a shorter line. people need to look up from their electronic gizmos and look around once in a while.

Even if this was your point, which is still wrong, Chipotle is a horrible example.

Chipotle and authentic Mexican food are barely even in the same food group. Not everyone prefers onion, cilantro, and uncooked corn tortillas to melted cheese, salsa, and flour. In fact I would say that most people prefer the latter, hence the lines.

ETA: It's also nice that a place like Chipotle can actually handle the crowds. There's a little tacqueria here that's always packed (#1 on yelp or something) and it's always a crowded, sweaty, 30 minute battle to get your food there.

Right. They're at exact opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of food quality. Subway uses crappy factory-farmed meat, highly processed and loaded with fillers.

Chipotle buys high-quality meat, often raised on pasture. It's one of the very few chain restaurants, at any price level, that doesn't use crappy meat.
