Why don't airlines charge passengers for excessive weight? (1 Viewer)

BMI was developed in the early 1800s by a ####### Belgian astronomer.  There is no more worthless measurement that has ever been dreamed up.  I'm not sure anyone in Belgium even weighs over 160.  And they certainly didn't in 1830.
This is the Belgian Minister of Health. That's right.  The minister of HEALTH.
it kinda sorta looks like she is flipping you off and when i say you i mean you not me because i am a brohan and she probably respects that take that to the bank bromigos

i flew a red eye to jamaica, many moons ago.  the dude sitting next to me, was built like schwarzenegger, in his prime.  i have reasonably broad shoulders.  we were in the waaaay back of the plane.  we just looked at each other and laughed.  we took turns just putting our arms on top of each others.  there was no other solution.

Just flew back from Jamaica with a 300lb woman next to me.  I am 6'3 215lb and got half my seat.  Her 300lb friend sat in row in front of her.  They should have been made to purchase a whole row and maybe they would have fit.

You should have purchased the jump seat in the cockpit. Totally your fault bro.

You are simply trying to hard here to make this a non issue. Either you are incredibly fat, or you have someone very close to you that is and instead of addressing the obesity, you feel it would be better to address all the other people that would have to deal with that obesity on a plane. Stop making it harder than it is and address the obesity.
Neither actually (I've posted pics and vids).

Obesity is a fire issue facing our nation, the world really, and I have been very clear I'm my belief that it needs to be addressed.

Sitting next to an overweight person for a couple issues is a minor inconvenience. Playing the extreme card is disingenuous as those extremes are also extremely rare and if a 600 lb life person tried they absolutely would be required to buy at least two seats.

I get that many find fat people disgusting and wish they would go away. That's a sad position to hold.

This is such a hypocritical post. You have been playing the jj watt card. That is way more extreme than the fatty spilling halfway into the next seat.

Forget it, he's rolling.

Why do you say that is hypocritical?

What about the question of whether or not you would treat a JJ Watt shaped person the same as an overweight person is hypocritical?

I never said, or suggested one was better than the other. I merely asked if you viewed their obligation, in your opinion, to purchase two, or more, seats was the same.

My guess is that you view them differently. But I can only accept what you type as a response.

You said people bringing up super heavy people is disingenuous because they are the exception. Jj watt's build is even more of an exception. A JJ Watt type build flying coach becomes even more of an exception, since so many people with such a build will be professional athletes.

Okay.

Airline seats average 17-18 inches wide, plenty of people with broader shoulders than that, at what point do they, or the airline, owe you money or demand more money from that person?

I honestly cant remember a time on a flight where the broadness of somebodys shoulders caused me an issue. Maybe because you can just lean away or slightly lean back and away and so can they.

I definitely remember sitting next to a guy who had just been cut from the packers in the preseason. He was pretty ripped, but he had the window and he pretty much leaned up against the window the whole time and slept. The few moments i remember him being awake i was too busy being the annoying fan asking about training camp to notice if i was cramped. Although i definitely made sure i didnt ask him about other packers since i thought that would be rude. But i was probably still annoying and should have had to give him money.

Not when we each paid the same amount for our seats, and I have less of mine because of the size of the person next to me. I should get all of what I pay for on that flight.

And I'll double down. There's something else going on with you. This issue hits too close to home for you to keep going on and on about this. There is something else going on here.

Well I posted a brief story about an experience I had sitting next to an overweight person upthread. That's it.

Again, if you can get your butt in the seat and the airline gets you to your destination then you got exactly what you paid for. I'm sorry if you had to touch another human being during the process.

I don't think this qualifies as being excellent to each other. Someone less charitable than me could say, for example, that your mother was the size of a house and died when you were young, which colored your opinion on the subject. But that person would not have a shred of evidence, like you don't have about Chaka. That person would, hypothetically, be a jackhole.

Like I said, you are taking way too much offense at people not wanting to touch someone for 2-3 hours straight because they spill over into the seat they have paid for. If this were a poker game, I'd go all in on the notion that you have more of a vested interest in this subject that you have let on and I'm pretty sure I'd take all your chips.

People are paying to get from point A to point B, not to cuddle with a stranger the entire time in between. This is not that hard. How about this. Next time you are in a big city and call a cab or an uber, why not climb into the front seat and sit on the drivers lap the entire way and tell them to loosen up about having to touch another human being. It's no big deal.

Ahh, the whole, "you need to be excellent to each other, you jackhole," argument. I love that one. Hey, the pot called...

Trying to dig out the study that basically showed that flying domestic planes burn more fuel because people are so fat here.  So yeah, for sure fatties are costing more to the airlines and we are all paying.  I'll dig it out, pretty sure put it in Otis's fatguys thread a few years ago anyways.  NTSB even went onto say that in some of those EJ planes that are so popular now that you want to avoid letting all the fatties sit in the single window seat as they would rather do since it may cause the plane to tip over a bit.

Like I said, you're wrong. And I do not see where I have given any indication that I have taken offense. Honestly, the people complaining in here make me chuckle more than anything.

I got problems with people spilling over into my seat.

my bigger problem recently is sitting next to people that reek of weed. I tend to fly in suits and I’ve left a few flights smelling like I came straight from Snoop’s house.

I am 6-1 and weigh 210.  Workout 5 days a week and my pants size is 32-34.   My doctors is a BMI guy and says I should lose 35 lbs weigh and be in the 175 range.  Plus he is a short butterball.

Hmmm. They did invent fries....

To be perfectly honest, your defensiveness on the subject likely means several are doing the same on your behalf. So I'm sure it all evens out.

Fair enough, text can be a difficult medium.

At no point have I felt defensive about this, but totally understand why it seems that way.

My stance comes from the experience I had that I posted on page one

On my last flight of about 5 hours a Chris Farley clone had the middle seat with me in the isle seat.   My entire body was at a 45 degree angle the entire flight.  Everyone walking by banged into me, along with the drink cart.

At no point in that experience was there any level of comfort.  It was terrible the entire 5 hours.  Yeah I think the dude should have paid more, but not to the airline.  To me.   He was using half my space.

I am a very tolerant and patient person, and I was ready to give myself a chloroform nap every chance I got the entire way home.

I'll always remember riding in one of those tiny planes from Charlottesville next to UVAs defensive line coach. I was squished, am I'm not exactly tiny.

Was the best conversation I've had with a stranger in a long time.

Could you not ask to be reseated?

Who knew that all these seat and a halfers were so interesting.

I am reminded of that kirk cameron and jamie gertz movie for some reason.

Can't believe you inconvenienced that guy by not flying first class and leaving that seat empty. Jerk.

Full flight
I'm trying to think what I would actually do if put in this situation.  I'm not the aggressive type to cause a scene, so I would most likely get up to talk to a stewardess instead of using the call button to avoid unnecessary embarrassment to the fat guy.  If they absolutely couldn't re-seat me I'm sure I would just deal with it as best I could.  I don't care too much if I touch the person next to me so I would try to claim as much of my seat as I could to be as comfortable as possible.  I would also try to claim the armrest (if it could even be pulled down).  He's taking half my seat, that's the least he could give me.

I still think what should happen in that situation is for the stewardess to inform the fat/big guy that if he can't fit in one seat then he needs to buy two seats on future flights.  This should also be mentioned on booking sites so people know going forward.  Then after a bit of a grace period, if you are taking more that your allotted seat, policy should dictate that you get the boot.  This will probably never happen because airlines don't want to take the PR hit from the obesity enablers, and asking all the airlines to enact a policy like this together is asking too much.

Different size seats with different prices.

Might be 50 years away from this happening since nobody is in a rush to build new planes.

There was nothing that could be done.  Someone gonna switch seats with me??  Nah.

I couldn't get a flight the next day cause I needed to be home.

Basically I just dealt with it and enjoyed that the non stop round trip flight from cleveland to phoenix was only like 180 bucks

Bout to book a round trip flight from cleveland to phoenix for 175 bucks.  Can't wait to see who I get stuck sitting next to this time.
