Why don't more teams just franchise their star RB? (1 Viewer)

I saw on the news ticker that the Bears will franchise Forte if no deal is struck. After seeing what happened to CJ(and Shaun Alexander, and that Chiefs back whose name escapes me) this kinda seems like the best approach in alot of situations for a RB. Their peak is usually so short, after all.

How many years can you franchise a player? If you get them on a 4 year rookie deal and can franchise for two years, that should about use up most backs. That's what I would do.
