Why is Joe advocating against week 17 championships? (1 Viewer)

Joe must have really been burnt in a week 17 championship game at some point in his life. How else to explain today's strange note:

Bigger issue - Week 17 Super Bowls are a terrible idea. If you're being forced to play today in the biggest week of your fantasy year, do EVERYTHING you possibly can to get your league to move to a Week 16 Super Bowl like most leagues do now.
I look at week 17 games as a plus for two reasons:(1) It extends the season. Why not have 1 more week to enjoy FF? There's already 35 weeks without it, why add one more?

(2) Competitive advantage. If you're better prepared, with quality backups, whether or not Ray Rice sits should be immaterial to your chances. I would think the owner of a fantasy football business would favor of anything that increases - not lessens - the need for his services.

Maybe that's just me.

Because they suck. If anything you have everyone in the league chip in 10 percent extra on the buy in and play week 17 as a league all its own. First place gets 80% of the money second place gets 20%.

Because they suck. Half of the players only play sparingly if at all. We do a week 17 in my league to maintain interest, but only for weekly & season hi scores. Our championship is wk 16 and always will be.

Unless they go to an 18 wk schedule

one league I play in combines the score from week 16 and week 17 to determine the champ....it's a nice little twist....kinda like having a halftime between games....plus it adds another element to the game/strategy as owners have to plan and prepare for that last week as the season starts winding down...sometimes beating each other to the Bernard Pierce type pick ups, etc....not neccessarly because they may play Pierce, but to keep him off the oppenents roster... kinda cool and different if you are in a bunch of leagues...the owner that is behind right now still has a shot

I play in a few different leagues. A zealots dynasty league with a week 16 championship. A league with my college buddies a week 17 championship. A work league with a combo of weeks 15 and 16 for the championship.

I prefer the week 17 championship league the most. Partially because I know everyone in that league but it also gives us an extra week in week 14 that everyone in the league is playing before our playoffs start. Losing out on a week just because a few players (who may or may not be on teams playing for the title anyway) MIGHT sit isn’t worth it to me.

I never really understood why the zealots championship is week 16. Everyone has 53 man rosters so there really shouldn’t be any excuses for lack of depth in week 17.

Either way as long as you and your league mates enjoy it, it doesn’t matter when your championship game is

Because hes paid to give GOOD fantasy advice. Advising a week 17 championship game would be BAD advice and make the site look amateurish.

:lmao:New here?First the notion that anything approaching a majority of the Shark pool would disagree with Joe on anything is laughable. Just doesn't happen. I get that many FF players are "scared" (for want of a better word) of week 17. I see the same thing in one of my leagues both with respect to ending the season after 16 weeks and a reluctance to add IDP. The guys in that league simply don't want to do the work. And there is a possibility of additional work to be ready in week 17 (and in some cases week 16) should teams lock up playoff seeds and decide to rest players. Some people don't like week 17. Its a preference, there's nothing inherently "good" or "bad" about ending the season early in week 16, it's just something we'd rather not do in my main league. That said, there's a business opportunity to differentiate by serving that small population that plays the entire season. I noticed a marked lack of material in the week 17 subscriber section. Regardless of my feelings on the subject, that isn't fair. A lot of the missing content has to do with forward rankings and transaction help. There is no need for that in week 17 since there is no future week to get ready for. Furthermore, week 17 sucks.

So if I drafted Rice, Dalton, and AJ Green, I should be penalized in week 17 championship game?

No thanks. Week 16 is good enough for me and 90% of FF players out there.

I like 17 weeks, because there are 17 weeks in the NFL season. You deal with whatever comes your way just like you do all season long. Why not have 12 weeks or 14 if you want to cut it short. The NFL has helped by scheduling division games in Week 17 making these games more meaningful.

If Joe said that week 17 Super Bowls were a good idea, you would get a very large majority of the Shark Pool disagreeing with him.

FBG had Green ranked as a top 5 receiver this week, he was supposed to have a big day. Calvin Johnson was projected No 1 and going after 2000 yards and had a poor day, nothing to do with week 17.

How do you prepare for it? Ravens and bengals had nothing to play for and rested their starters most of the game. We learned that today. Ey clinched everything last week. You were able to prepare for that? Meanwhile the falcons who clinched everything played their starters the whole game. Meanwhile, people have been talking about the, resting their starters for weeks now. Its a crapshoot that there is no preparing for. Also, some years, there is a 4 oclock game which might become irrelevant due to results of a game at 1pm. How do you prepare for that?

I play in a week 17 league and just won the championship. I had to make just one roster move to account for a resting player. I like the 17 week season as it presents you with additional challenges and requires a lot of thought, strategy, and analysis for the final week. You also have to think ahead and prepare.

I play in both 16 and 17 week leagues and like the different challenges of each.

I agree with kupcho that the lack of content and discussion this week was disappointing.

So which players were actually held out of week 17 because their teams had nothing to play for? Is there a list?

:goodposting: and one of the main reasons I'm not a subscriber any more.My old league has a week 17 championship. A couple of years ago I was in the championship game and felt FBG's let me down when I needed them the most (preparing for a championship game) For the record, I don't like week 17 championship games (that's why I no longer play in that league), but a fantasy football site that charges money owes it to it's subscribers to have valuable content in week 17.

This year I won the championship in my league with a week 16 championship without being a subscriber. Thank you Shark Pool!

Edited!

Have a great season, guy!

I'm interested in OP's reasoning about this part, the topic subtitle...: "Why is Joe advocating against week 17 championships? Isn't that contrary to his business interests?"

I can't imagine there's any impact to Joe/FBG financially either way. Subscribers pay for the season. Whether an individual's league season is 16 weeks or 17 weeks is inconsequential.

I'd rather take my wife out on Week 17 and spend some of that $$$ I just won in week 16 :) However, I must admit that 2012 wasn't as kind to me in the playoffs as 2011.

I used to be a wk16 advocate, but the rhetoric has become such a joke that now I side with wk17 people out of principle. There were about 5-8 players affected as is usually the case and you can count on one hand the number of guys who sat out. Half the league? I don't think so.Edit to be more excellent to a solid poster.

Sorry, but there really isn't a good argument for playing championships in week 17. Even if just a few sit out it isn't fair to the good teams who were unlucky enough to have this happen, while a lesser team steals the title because they got lucky and their best players didn't sit/thread

Why not? More teams than that are affected every week by injuries, bye weeks, suspensions and any number of other factors. That is part of the luck of the game. You deal with it. You don't skip week 7 when lots of teams are missing several players due to byes, but you'll skip week 17 because a couple players in the whole league might sit.

One of the better moves by the NFL in recent history.I play in two leagues and one is a week 16 championship and the other a week 17. In the week 17 I try to look ahead later in the season to see which teams will be playing meaningful games at the end in case I make a late run and make player moves based on that. You adapt to the league.

... I won the Week 17 league yesterday too!

:lmao: at thinking that most are taking this stance just to agree with the owner of this site. I am sure most of us were playing fantasy football for years before even finding this site. I had been playing for 7 years before coming here, and in no league had we ever used week 17 for anything. No legit league does.

So which players were actually held out of week 17 because their teams had nothing to play for? Is there a list?
This year?
Sure
This was an unusual year in this regard. Many of the teams still had something to play for. Many of the others who could have rested players had recent history or special cases happening where they didn't rest when they could (Bengals and Falcons both still smarting over embarrassing first game playoff exits after having rested players in last 2-3 years, Colts wanting to play well for Pagano, etc). The Ravens rested Rice, and there were probably some other players who were dinged who might have played if it was a meaningful game but there wasn't any reason to.That normally isn't the case though. I have a league I haven't been able to get to switch from a week 17 Super Bowl. This was my 7th straight Super Bowl appearance in the league (look at me!!!), so I've had a lot of opportunities to note the effects. At worst we've had seasons where both of us were missing 3-4 of our offensive starters because of teams resting players. Actually, worse than that are the seasons where 1 team is missing zero or one player, and the other team is missing 3-4. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth that the championship gets settled by people's backups, not their starters. And it's not really something that is overly predictable. A lot of times it's a wildcard team or a lesser division winner who is sitting their players, not necessarily the best team in the league.

It's just you. I want to decide the league championship when the vast majority of players are still fully engaged.

One of the color guys on yesterday's broad cast made a reference to "U-Haul games", Specifically mocking the Eagles for packing it in.

If you think "one extra week" of fantasy football is that important, God bless you.

Playing in week 17 is no smarter or dumber than playing head to head instead of total points. If you like it, play it and live with the negatives.

That being said, week 16 is important if your league plays head to head. If you play total points, no real worries playing to week 17. I think an extra week of football is a good thing, but with everything on the line you're banking your season on meaningless games.

If you really want to emulate the NFL, why not determine the SB participants in week 16, and have those owners play it out over the course of the real playoffs with a new draft? That way your biggest games are also the players' biggest games. You just skip week 17 altogether and crown your new champ in february...when the NFL does it. I know it's not what everyone is used to, but wouldn't that eliminate players not giving it their all, or playing out the string or whatever?
