Greg Zuerlein just kicked a 61-yard FG with the wind for the Rams at Vikings that the announcers thought might have been good from 71 yards. Wind is approximately 19 mph in Minneapolis today. Not sure about the exact wind speed at TCF Bank Stadium.
Shouldn't kicks be broken into two categories, FGs and Wind-Aided FGs? Kind of like in track and field.
Anything over 5 mph? 7 mph? At elevation might be another *.
7th longest in NFL history so not a big deal for the record book, but what if it was 71 yards?
I think you're making an assumption that the others on the list weren't with the wind.
Maybe also that it's super easy if you have the wind. Some times when announcers say the wind is behind them it's truly diagonal and not as easy as it would seem.
Temperature affects the football and it's flight.
Rain, snow
Altitude used to be discussed.
In the 80s, some of the best teams had outstanding kickers and punters and some of this carried over into the 90s then died. Today we only discuss FG % and occasionally XP %.
No one cares about coffin corners, hang time, or kickoffs out of the end zone assuring no return.
100 years ago, Reggie Roby punted 75 -80 yards in the air with an incredibly long hang time. Pats punter Camarillo punted the ball probably 60 yards but it rolled another 29 yards for an 89 yard punt. People did discuss that Roby's punt was probably better despite Camarillo having the record.
Sean Landeta punted four or so coffin corners in one game and the gmen won like 6-3 or 9-6. IDK remember what Parcells said but somehow they started keeping track of coffin corners for a year or two then dropped it. I've never seen a stat since
Well back to Kickers, Adam Vinatieri is certainly one of the top scorers in NFL history and (although JWB has a heart attack if you say it) one of the best kickers ever. When's the last time you saw a Vinatieri article? Did you notice anything of Morten Anderson retiring years back?
Sorry for long reply, trying to put in context how simply no one cares anymore
