WIS XV: Alphabet Soup with a side of Salary- Draft & Season Thread (1 Viewer)

this format is perverse. value x position scarcity x alphabet scarcity. how do you figure out rankings in 3 dimensional space?

btw, if i had a team in this, i'd name it oso caldo alfabeto

wow...

two picks and my already ridiculous and different from every other draft thought process is changing more...

I think I'm going to hate this draft... its already ridiculous...

1.04- Jimmie Foxx

Can he field? Not really. Are there a lot of productive F's in baseball history? More or less than others. Could I have picked a player with position scarcity? Sure.

but can Jimmie Foxx crush a baseball? You know it.

Scrabble score for Foxx is 21Piazza is the early leader with 28
Now there's a potential future format. Scrabble score in draft round X determines draft order in round X+1.

you'd almost have to do scrabble score in round (x+(x+1) is the draft position in round x+2 so its still serpentine... otherwise I'd worry about the top couple picks taking it out of control with repeated top picks...

Flipping a coin between two guys....

1.5 - Fernando Valenzuela - 1981

Scarce letter, solid value up against the cap, and I am not doing another one of these things without decent pitching.

It hurts to look at the other guys you're saying goodbye to by selecting a player by a given letter. That being said, I think this guy isn't the best available at his position, but he's still a #1 starter and I'm willing to say goodbye to the other V players out there. Normalization helps his HR rate and he's got some other great numbers, including a lot of IP.

1.06 - Justin Verlander, SP

Plus, he's into asians.Gb that.

Verlander was my #1 pitcher and v player and would have been my picked if he made it to me...

Outlay and verlander were probably my 1 and 2... Venezuela was up there too...

Ok I removed the owner list which was NOT in draft order, so now there shouldn't be any confusion about who's up. The draft order list now has a link to everyone's profile for easy PMing.

The google doc and draft list are up to date. I'm not going to be as good about updating things over the weekends but I'll do my best.

Yount was #3 on my initial list. #2 will probably end up being my pick, but 1,2,4,5,6 are all gone. Love what he brings to the table.

When a guy has all 3 it's easy (Yount, Verlander, Utley)... the question is how do you value a guy who only has 2 of the 3 dimensions.

Hmm. I'm officially free ballin' with Dr. D after these developments. Figured I would try to sneak Utley and Yount around the 1/2 turn. Apparently folks are in on the letter scarcity nice and early.

Way to try to stoke the fire!

I think letter scarcity is going to be pretty overrated when all is said and done. Not to specifically criticize anyone taken so far, as you can make a case that they are all towards the top of their position tiers, but I think generally it's more likely to result in having stronger positions 22-25 on the roster at the expense of top end strength.
