WIS XV: Alphabet Soup with a side of Salary- Draft & Season Thread (1 Viewer)

1995 Tom Urbani
In 1999 Urbani ended his career, pitching for the Italian baseball team of the Rimini Pirates as an Italian-American (oriundo) player. He led the team to a 7 games Championship Series win against Nettuno : in that season Urbani threw the fifth perfect game in the history of the Italian baseball (against the San Marino team), and the only one in the 40 years history of the Rimini team. In that summer (1999), Urbani played as a starting pitcher for the Italian national team in the pre-Olympic European tournament, beating France on a two hit, 14 strike out effort.

I took Miggy in the 16th. Fritz was my best available SP for a long time out there. I thought he'd go in the WC for one of the many teams hurting at SP.

So, Oso, in your shadow draft, you roughly drafted the letters in reverse frequency order? I see you drafted all the top-8 letters in Rounds 15-25.

That would have been a great overall strategy, with two or three "out-of-turn" picks to nab a few elite seasons.

I considered Peterson and Donovan in the wild card round but I went with Schoolboy Rowe's smaller set of higher quality innings. I think I used Peterson before and he underperformed (or maybe that was Mike Kekich).

I'm not sure who would catch, but this team of leftovers could probably win 70 games.

Sp1 Earl Moore

Sp2 Carl Lundgren

Sp3 Fritz Petersen

Sp4 Ed Siever (wild card)

CL Andy Rincon

RP Chief Yellowhorse

RP Kenley Jansen

RP Bill Henry

LF Ken Williams

CF Cesar Cedeno

SS Vern Stephens

1B Mark Teixiera

3B George Brett

2B Marcus Giles

RF Moises Alou

4OF Happy Felsch

5OF Amos Otis

although I wonder if we have 14 who want to live why we don't just go 7 and 7, that should be more than enough sim live for everyone...
As much as it pains me to agree with Larry, this makes a lot of sense.
:goodposting:These divisions are whack.
So propose something else. Not just a vague description but an actual setup. Assuming it's reasonable then we'll use it.
I honestly think it should just be random. I think the live/non live thing is much ado about nothing much. Some of the "livers" always stop playing live because their teams end up sucking, and some of the "non-livers" would potentially sim live more if they ended up in a division with someone who wanted to sim live.Just seems to be the "fairest" way

Make Ted Simmons the WC, and take George Earnshaw or Hod Eller as SP4.

Could also take Wilkins as the C and find a OF elsewhere which is easier.

Surprised nobody gobbled up Don Padgett as backup C. Only 273 ABs, but a 998 OPS lefty.

Also was looking at Cliff Johnson as C/1B/OF.

So let me get this straight, we're letting people change the divisions after they've been set because they don't like their match-ups? (Tre wanting out of jfranco's division)

Is there no way other than SIMLIVE to have pitchers as pinch hitters?:valueofZINNdropping:
None that I was able to figure out. I had Doc Crandall in one of the previous sims and wanted him to pick up a bat before either of my backup catchers. I couldn't get Sparky to pick Crandall even when I set both backup catchers to rest.Edit: You can decrease the pinch hit frequency for you good hitting pitcher so he'll stay in the game longer. This isn't more useful for a mop-up guy who's half decent and has sufficient IP/G. Don't know if Zinn qualifies on either count.

Pretty sure you can set Sparky to allow pitchers to PH. Think it's just a check box ... might be in the batters' settings window where you set things like propensity to steal bases or lay down sacrific bunts. It is NOT where the PH fine-tuning/defensive replacements are set.

Yeah I don't think its possible.

I am now fascinated with Jimmy Zinn. I want to know his story. How do you rack up 295 wins in the minors? Almost all at AA level? 14 years at AA, not good enough to move up, yet good enough to average 37 starts a year??

Something doesn't add up.

Zinn has an OAV of .340. Then again, he has an average in 50 PA's of over .380. Hitting good. Pitching harrible.

He hit over .300 in the minors I believe - for his career.

that's how it worked out. i just did a quick/dirty baseline (a la VBD) for each letter, then added a bonus for positional scarcity on offense. With a bit more prep work, would have put more emphasis on $/PA & $/IP, to find some low salary nuggets, and build a better baseline.Would have liked to get a better R and D, in retrospect.

P.S. Would have taken Bagwell as my B, but knew that would have been artificial, as he was able to slide to round 23 in the real draft because there was only one more team needing a B.

The actual moving dynamics of this draft were pretty cool. Positional vs. letter scarcity gave the ability to really wait on some guys. Then again, if only three people needed a letter but one player REALLY stood out and fit your team, you might want to pounce. So many ways to skin this cat.Of course, we don't know how the behavior of the other drafters would play out, so the early rounds were pretty crazy deciding between an impact player (imo Larry Walker) and position and letter (in retrospect, I could have gotten a great OF much later, even if not Larry Walker). This is the first draft that I can remember when I really dont know which picks were regrettable because of the odd situation we were in when that pick was made. Sometimes you just took a great player knowing that if you took a chance later and missed, you still had money in the bank.

And yet he wasted away in AA. I'm going to blame it on a woman. Stupid dames.
