Women's World Cup Official Thread - think of them as little men (1 Viewer)

Just wanted to add the way FIFA treats the women players is outrageous. Underpaid, lesser facilities, etc. That corrupt organization can not be brought to heel quickly enough.
FIFA is corrupt to the core but they don't pay the players. The players club team pays his/her salary.

For international games, it is the countries federation that adds some renumeration.
The women got 2 million in prize money. Germany got 35 million. The women outdrew the World Series.
As I said, FIFA does not pay the players. They give out prize money to the federations based on the finish for each team. The prize money amount is based on FIFA tv contracts and FIFA sponsorships of which the men obviously have SIGNIFICANTLY more of.

Each player then has a contract with their local federation to get renumeration based on a multitude of issues.

It sounds like you don't understand the incredible gap in revenue difference for the men vs the women at the FIFA level.

The mens World Cup is a money making machine. The WWC probably struggles to make just a little if any profit.
I was reading a story on SI about this today, and it worked out that the women's WC generated less than 1/2 of 1% of the advertising revenue of the men's WC. I had no idea the gap was that big. That's pretty amazing.
And that is just one piece of the revenue gap. The massive gaps exist in all other forms as well (ticket sales, game day revenue, tv revenue etc). The women's games would not even be shown in most countries if FIFA did not package them in with the men's games.

The article I linked from ESPN quoted that the 2014 WC brought in $4.5 Billion in direct revenue to FIFA. That is staggering number for a 64 game "season".

Pretty good article here from Foudy on how to develop women's soccer globally and how little is has grown since 1999. Sadly, I think if FIFA is really what they need to bank on, they are never going to get it.

BBC had an article saying that most father's still preferred their daughters to play tennis vs soccer due to a variety of somewhat outdated concerns. If England is still not fully accepting of women playing soccer because they might get hurt or because it's not lady-like, what chance is there for the rest of the world to embrace it soon?

my daughter visited Spain and France this past April vacation. Part of the trip was that they spent a day with other high school kids in Spain (to cross practice speaking). She figured soccer might be something that would be useful to talk about. She said the girls looked at her like she was crazy and they tried to explain that very few girls play soccer in Spain and that it is only for boys mostly.

I think you are right in that it is going to take multiple generations for this to change. These type of cultural biases can be difficult to overcome.
There was an article talking about the women's team from Spain. They have had the same coach for like 25 years, barely practice, and didn't even review film for the WC. The Spanish Federation doesn't give two ####s about women's soccer.
I saw that, too. Deadspin or Vice Sports, maybe. The coach was a terrible dillwad, the team never had a chance to do well.

I really don't care all that much about women's footy though I watch the WC games because, well, it's footy. But while I was watching I was thinking how great this was for little girls all around the world to watch.

This is a really bad sign for the future of the business side of the women's game. When sponsors ignore you just after something this big, it is hard to see them jumping in later on.

wow, that sucks...especially after reading this.

.....but those companies have been shockingly alone in backing a team that drew the most TV viewers for any soccer game in US history on Sunday.
Seems like the ratings would have had positive affect

Let's be honest with ourselves here. America didn't get more excited about the women's world cup than other countries because we're more progressive or ahead of them. We got more excited because we're good at women's soccer and constantly middling in the men's game. It's the same reason we think that swimming is the biggest event in the summer olympics here while it's probably not even aired in China, while the complete opposite can be said of target shooting.

"Yeah, America! We're good at this sport, go USA!"

I think sponsors and the money people are starting to become leery of the one time affect of perfect storms like this. They probably need to see more day in and day out interest rather than the once every couple of years spike, even if the spike was huge.

When you factor in that two the few sponsors were MLS and Nike (which already sponsors US Soccer), the list is even more pathetic. But at least they know the reality.

Hopefully at least a few of the players will do very well sponsorship wise even if the sport does not get a long term sponsorship boost.

They are expecting record NWSL crowds in the upcoming games so hopefully they can find a way to build off of that initial bump. One of the few things MLS has done well over the years is learn how to leverage the WC bumps into on going interest in the day to day league.

Maybe it's just me, but when I hear Hope Solo talks during interviews I just think of stuff like Fatal Attraction. Like you'd wake up in a bathtub with your kidneys removed.
