Woodpecker Guys (1 Viewer)

I have a woodpecker attacking my front porch. I have a wooden railing and a vertical beam which is decorative (I think) - meaning it's not load bearing or whatever. My house numbers are on the beam vertically and the little bugger sits on the numbers and is very efficiently drilling pretty big holes into the wood. He's made 3 holes fully through the wood (the beam is hollow) and I don't see any bugs inside the beam or streaming out or whatever.

My first thought was bugs of some kind he wanted to eat, but again that doesn't appear to be the case. If it's not bugs, what could it be? Either way, how do I stop him from crushing my house, lol. Right now I have a light catcher hanging in front of the numbers which is keeping him away for now, but that's not a permanent solution.

What are my options?

They do it just to be a big pain in the ***.

I throw tennis balls at them.

isnt reflective tape hung loosely so that it blows in the wind supposed to work I see it on cedar sides houses and think that is what it’s for take that to the bank brohans

As to the why, actually posted this in my random stuff thread a few months ago:

They just like your wood.

As for stopping them... pellet gun? get a cat/owl/hawk/bobcat/flamethrower?

I have one in my hood that likes to peck on the metal vent pipes. There's a (I assume) matched pair that visit my bird feeder often. I guess he's into impressing his chick with his hardcore rock vibes.

We had woody woodpecker attack our home one Sunday morning. My wife and I woke up, we saw this beautiful bird in one of our kitchen windows while we were grabbing our coffee. We often have birds in the window, a lot of times it's the stupid smaller birds dive bombing the windows in the Spring time but this thing (to me) was massive and he was just looking at us like "eff you pal, you want some of this?" The next thing you know, wood chips are flying everywhere and he is DESTROYING one of our wooden casement windows. . . awesome! So, I shooed him out there and I put a big fake plastic owl in front of the window (you fill it with sand to keep it from tipping over) and he did not return after that. The fake owl is still there, that was like 10 years ago. Anyway, I called a company and I had to replace that window along with three other windows. Our house is 30+ years old and some of the casement windows had started to rot a little bit so those needed replaced. I had it checked for termites, there were none, but we do get some carpenter ants from time to time. Lovely.

Before the light catcher thing I tried something like this... my wife had some decorative bird thing with wires on the feet so you can add it to a wreath or something like that... it was a cardinal and I attached it to one of the house numbers on the beam figuring it might scare him away. However, the woodpecker was definitely not intimidated and started pecking again before I even got inside the house, lol. He just sat on the number directly above where the fake cardinal was attached. This guy is persistent.

Fake plastic owl worked for me as well. Got it years ago and it's still there. No peckers since installation.

Cardinals aren't too intimidating. Try a Pirate - no one wants to look at them.

I get woodpeckers drumming on my aluminum gutters every Spring. AS an added bonus they like to start this around 7am. I hang about five feet of THIS on the gutter and they don't come back as long as it's hanging there.

Cardinals are not only not intimidating, they're easy to catch. I had one fighting his reflection in the windows and crapping everywhere last year. I caught him and took him 15 miles away and released him. He was back the next afternoon. Caught him again the next morning and dropped him off 25 miles away, and he didn't come back.

Had a neighbor ask me to stop doing work so early on weekends. Turned out it was some bird that would hit a fence post only on weekends for some reason. Guy started feeding it suet(spelling?) And it calmed down

No idea why it would only do this on weekends. Maybe just general activity in the alley was higher.
