1 Rio Forge Sport 256MB MP3 Player
I think I may have bought one of these. I tried to at least. I clicked the button, entered my CC and shipping info and clicked the button. It just took me back to the Woot homepage after that though and when I click "My Account" it says I haven't bought anything. I'm really confused by all of that.

Just bought 2.

I've got about 100 Gig of mp3s at home, now wife and I have mp3 players for the gym! Nice to have FM tuner for the TVs at the gym.

refurbished.. hopefully they are ok.

purchased two Rio Forge Sport 256 MB MP3 players in December 2005. Since that time the volume control switch (down) has broken on both of them.

Do NOT buy this item... the quality/durability is extremely poor.

Got one of these for Christmas, and it worked fine until the battery went dead in it. When I replaced the battery it kept telling me it needed to be reformatted. I followed the advice on the website and nothing worked. I called tech support and they walked me through it, but it still would not work. Then they told me the memory was corrupted (and from what they said it was a common problem) and had to be replaced. But since my wife had bought it well in advance of Christmas it was past the 90 day warranty. That's right only 90 factory warranty. Seems they acknowledge these things are only good for a month or so then give out on you sometime within the first 6 months or less. They offered to sell me a new one for around $20 dollars more than you can buy one on through this or any other website.

No wonder there are so many refurbished models for sell....

I purchased the Rio Forge MP3 Player from Amazon about a month ago. Worked fine until one night I tried to connect it to my computer for a new music download. I plugged the usb cable into the unit and... nothing. The MP3 player would not show connection status. It actually showed nothing at all. I unplugged the cable and tried to power up the player itself. Nada. I changed the battery... nothing. The player is now D.O.A.

I am not even going to try for a repair. I will write it off as a bad learning experience.

Stay away from this one, January 5, 2006

Reviewer: William J. Boyd - See all my reviews

I bought the Rio Forge 256 MB in June of 2005 by December it would not work. The Rio has only a 90 day warrenty on labor so they would replace it for $70 if I wanted to send it in. Having paid $90 for it new I told them what they could do with it.

Glad I checked this before I almost pulled the trigger on this one.

I bought 1 Rio at Best Buy, and had it about a week. I liked the armband, for working out. I went to buy one for my husband, and when Best Buy did not have any in stock, I bought one online. The day my husband's arrived, my died. I was able to return it to Best Buy, since I had it less than 30 days. 3 days later, my husband's died, and I am having a heck of a time trying to get dealtrain (the company I purchased from through Amazon)or Rio to refund my money. Stay away from this product!!!

Makes a Nice Paperweight, October 1, 2005

Reviewer: Kenneth Jannot (Dearborn, MI USA) - See all my reviews

If you're looking for a nifty, futuristic-looking paperweight, this item is the one for you. All you have to do is buy it and use it. It will die on you, sometime not long after the too-short 90-day warrantee expires, leaving you with no way to make it right. You will receive absolutely no help from Rio customer service. So, Voila! You have a paperweight.

That is what happened to me. The Forge was nice enough while it worked, which was for about 8 months. Then, it suddenly and unexpectedly completely died. Nothing brings it back to life; Rio customer service very helpfully tells me that it seems my device needs to be relaced--which they won't do, since it's beyond the warrantee.

If you're looking for a paperweight, though, it would be much more cost-effective to get and paint a rock.

Too bad it doesn't work, September 16, 2005

Reviewer: John Bathon (towson, md United States) - See all my reviews

I was looking for a simple mp3 player to use at the gym that had FM capability. The Rio Sport seemed perfect - I liked the design, especially the quality armband that came with it, and the fact that I knew the Rio name. After setting up the software on my PC, installed the music, it worked for about a week, then just died. I took it back to the store for an exchange. That one lasted a day. Luckily, I was able to get a full refund on the second unit.

Needless to say, I'm disappointed. I ended up with a cheaper Samsung that was on clearance. It's square and ugly, instead of an armband it has a totally ######## strap for putting around your neck, but it's rugged as hell and works like a champ. I'll wait until RIO figures out how to make them work at least until the warranty runs out......

Way too fragile, even for the price, August 31, 2005

Reviewer: Natalie Pechacek (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews

I purchased the Rio Cali and enjoyed using it except for the fact that you can't organize your music. All of the songs are just dumped into the unit without folders. Everything was fine until it fell off my stair climber (about 4 1/2 feet) onto the 1 inch rubber mat below. When I picked up the unit, the power button was stuck in the depressed position. The unit still worked until I pushed the button again and the unit turned off. Now it is dead. I found this to be strange since the Cali is described as having a protective rubber shell. I have never dropped this unit before because I normally keep it in the arm strap. I just got off the phone with Rio Customer Service and they told me that I can have it fixed for $49.00. I can buy a new one for $49.88 at J&R. The new Forge is the same design and will probably break if you drop it. My suggestion is to stay away from Rio mp3 players. They are very fragile and once a problem arises, they are dead. This was my 3rd and last Rio mp3 player. The first two died from firmware malfunctions. I keep buying them because they are cheap, however, in the long run I am spending more money than I would for an iPod with a 1 year warranty.

another dead one, August 24, 2005

Reviewer: Hank Oxford - See all my reviews

No kidding, no making stuff up, these things have a high failure rate. In spite of the warnings in the other reviews I bought one of these a couple of months ago. It just died. Luckily, it is still under warranty but now I'm without a player while it's being repaired/replaced and I have no faith that it won't die again. I'm very disappointed in this product. It worked well when it worked but that's little consolation after it dies.

TERRIBLE PRODUCT - Get an iPod!!!, July 9, 2005

Reviewer: Just a normal everday dude (North Mississippi) - See all my reviews

Ok, to make a long story short...

After a lot of research, I purchased the Rio Forge when it first became available because I read that flash players won't skip and are better for exercise.

However, I had to send the first one back. It stopped working at all and ruined the $100 digital card I had gotten to expand its memory. The FM tuner works better on the refurbished one they sent me but it is still a piece of crap! The slightest bump cuts the player off and it only holds only a few cd's. The battery compartment cover won't stay on right and the headphones always fall out. The ONLY thing I like about it is the armband, which is pretty comfortable.

I "bought the bullet" and got an iPod mini and I have been much happier! No skipping despite my using it for running, weight-lifting, for an eliptical trainer, and for cycling. It holds a lot more songs than the Rio and is a lot more durable and easier to use.

If you can't afford an iPod mini, get an iPod shuffle instead of this player. I know it sounds good but it is cheaply made and you'll only regret it as I did.

This is my second Rio Player and both have been useless within a year of very mild use. When a Rio player breaks outside of the 90-day warrentee period, there is no support and no replacement.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

Very unhappy...., May 9, 2005

Reviewer: Y Tes (LA, CA) - See all my reviews

I've had my Rio Forge 256 for 7 months. I only use it about 2-3 times a week no longer than one hour each use. Over the last couple months, I've been experiencing problems with my unit. More recently, it turns off for no reason. It sounds like a lot of people are experiencing problems with this unit. If you go to the Rio website, they have a Q&A of issues, I've experienced most of them. I'm still working with Rio to figure out a way to fix the problems I've been experiencing. This unit is made for active use and it doesn't seem like it's holding up very well. I'd recommend looking into a different brand if you're shopping for an MP3 player.

bought a 512 rio forge for my wife in December. It was great, and I bought a 256 for myself in January and another for my son in February. Then the problems started.

I am not sure what problems my son had, but I know he sent his back for warranty work once and then got the seller to take it back and let him buy another brand.

Then my wife's 512 stopped working -- It would only turn on momentarily. Customer support told her to send it back, which she did.

Three days ago, mine stopped working. It will not turn on at all. While I was talking to the customer support two days ago, I asked about my wife's. The tech said it was on the way back, but then realized they were returning a 256 instead of the 512 she sent in.

But not to worry. Since my 256 had to be sent back, I should keep the 256 they were sending, and they would return a 512 to me. And to make up for my trouble, they would e-mail me something I could use at UPS to send it back at their expense.

The e-mail never came. When I called back this morning, I was told it was going out today. If so, it did not arrive. I left a message with the woman I was dealing with this afternoon -- she was talking to someone else -- and told her I wanted to get the the thing repaired as quickly as possible, was willing to pay the mailing costs, and asked her to call back and tell me who to send the machine to. She didn't. And no e-mail arrived.

The 256 they exchanged for my wife's 512 arrived today. It does not work. She cannot turn it on.

In sum: three buys, three duds; a 100 % failure rate and very poor customer service.

****

A few days after I wrote the above, and after I voiced my complaints to the company, I received two new working Rio Forges in the mail, and they are have worked nicelyh ever since. I should not have had to have gone through the frustration, and I don't know why I had such a run of bad luck, but it all seemed to work out in the end. The machine is great when it works, and the two new ones have worked for about two months, now.

Thanks man. You can go back to working your job in the iPod department at Apple now.All of the guys posting at Woot that have had this particular player have good things to say about it and Cnet gave it a 7 out of 10. Just about any player out there is going to have problems and people that post negative reviews.

I had a Rio die on me pretty fast too, fortunately for once I got the extended warranty at Best Buy, and I was able to trade it for an Ipod at the same price.

:scared: in case GM is in the house...

Yeah, people who have had good experiences are much less apt to post them than those who've had bad ones.

Buy an Apple..., March 9, 2005

Reviewer: O. Harris "Stic Harris" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

My Forge 256 crashed when adding an expansion card. Can't even turn it on anymore. Nothing the help line suggests works and they've made no move to accept responsibility. I'm furious with Rio and will never buy their product again.

bad product, bad support, March 6, 2005

heed the advice of others on here. this is a defective product with extremely poor customer support, waiting weeks for responses. my player died two weeks after i got it. buy something else, the aggravation isn't worth it. and rio obviously is not concerned about customer support after the sale.

Avoid the Rio Forge, March 5, 2005

Reviewer: C. White (South Carolina) - See all my reviews

After a month the problems started with my Rio player. First the volume couldn't be turned down, then the songs couldn't be advanced. I patiently contacted online support and had to wait a week for a response. Each time the response wasn't complete. It told me to download something but didn't say from where. They told me to send info (including credit card #, which I didn't) and then told me my phone # was missing (which it wasn't). I re-sent the info and heard nothing for 2 1/2 weeks. After following up they told me to fax in my original receipt but didn't give a fax #. Their site has a tab for phone and fax contact info but doesn't include a fax number.

I bought one - tried to add expansion card - it crashed. Returned it figuring it was a fluke. NOPE! Second one crashed too. I am using latest firmware (1.33) and have tried all of their suggested "fixes". What's worse - Rio appears to know they have a problem and continue to sell it without a solution.
