84 years and we've never made the final.

USA has had the resources to be competitive in just about every sport.

This is the final frontier and greatest sports challenge for the USA.

Soccer, hockey, basketball, lacrosse, water polo, ultimate frisbee, etc.... its all basically the same game. Two teams trying to move the object down the field and score by putting the object in the other goal. All fun to play. All boring to watch.
There is no goal in ultimate frisbee.

And I would argue that high level ultimate would translate extremely well to television.

Always liked it, but now that I'm coaching my daughter's youth soccer I'm really looking forward to watching it with her this year.

Our girls can do it.
Our girls were ahead of the rest of the world from the start. There is no real comparison here. The two situations could not be more different starting with there being maybe 4-5 competent women's national teams where it is 30-35 for the men.

We should send our women to Rio...

I'm not real interested. At least the games are during the day so that they're over by the time I get home from work.

Yeah, there's nothing worse than when something you don't plan to watch is on TV when you get home from work, and you are forced to go through all the trouble of not watching it.

In 2006, I watched a number of Italy's games at an Italian-American club with my buddy and his grandfather and the rest of the club. Maybe 200 people there for these games, and at least half of them are off-the-boat, don't even speak English. The dudes spent the entire games yelling at each other, arguing with each other, yelling at the TV, etc. One short guy who spoke no English had made a construction paper yellow card and red card and walked around brandishing them at people for fun for the past few games. He was probably like 70 years old.

We're there for the final, place is going nuts. Zidane famously headbutts Materrazzi and the ref comes over to him. This little old guy climbs up and stands on a table in the middle of the room, and everyone quiets down to see the call. Ref gives a red, and this dude theatrically pulls out his red card and aims it at Zidane on the TV. The room ####### exploded. :lmao: I'll never forget that dude.

Forza!

:lmao: That's awesome!

Worst - 1986, I watched the Hand of God game in a pub in London.

Best - 1994, Cotton Bowl Germany v S. Korea and Holland v Brazil

Back when I had season tickets to the Crew, I had a bunch of placards that said "10.0", "9.5", "8.7", etc, that we brought to the games. We used them to judge the quality of the opponent's dives.

Good times.

I think I'm going to do this at work starting next week.

Interested, but it sucks that most of the games are on during the day so I won't be watching much.

The Mexico-Israel friendly was third story on the 6 am Sports Center today. Even knowing that the Mexican national team is a pretty serious draw in this country, I was a little surprised at that.

I think the funny part is more that they showed more stats/ graphics than the actual game.

That 9min of actual football isn't going to fill the 3 hours Americans are going to sit on the couch

So this is where we bash Americans for not liking the fifth-best sport on earth?

Because that is truly boring. Good work.

I will probably watch some of the semis & finals.
The semis are tricky to catch for many people due to the weekday afternoon time slot.

A Brazil-Argentina type final though will easily break the TV ratings record for a soccer game in the US (the 2010 WC final holds the current record at 24.3 million viewers)
24 million viewers trails only NFL playoffs/Super Bowl and the Olympics opening ceremonies in years when they're applicable. 24 million exceeds World Series, NBA finals and NHL finals viewing numbers. Now, if somebody wants to argue that a once-every-four-year event can't be compared to annual ones, that's ok with me. But those are fairly serious numbers, about a 31% increase over the 2006 WC IIRC, and I agree wif NR that even a modestly attractive final pairing will exceed that, maybe by as much as 20%.

A PSA from me. Please feel free to carry on with your cross-sport bashing.

They served prosciutto and provolone sandwiches (stereotypical eh?) and my friend's little brother - who was 6 at the time - put ketchup on his sandwich. I believe he got a yellow for that, IIRC.

Over/Under on number of times I will mention soccer to my boss during the world cup: zero

Over/Under on number of times my boss will bring up soccer in order to make a tired joke about soccer during the world cup: 27

Odds that I will respond to boss' tired jokes about soccer with silent, bemused stare: 100%

These poll results must be like a hot needle in the eye to the bashers (not to the people who just don't like the sport, I mean the people who seem almost angry that the sport continues to thrive).

This poll in 2006 would have been inverted from what it shows today.

Voted extremely interested.

But still, they took my most useful evolutionary appendages, lopped them off, and made me kick while running, which is completely unnatural.

Sounds awesome. Tal - ent.

Still a wonderful game. Enjoy.

eta* and Roadkill1292 nailed my joke. Heyyy----ohhhhh,.

Why would I care if you like it? I may not like it, but you do, so carry on. All I ask is that I not be treated like some sort of Luddite by some of your more zealous acolytes.

Sorry you're so upset over my indifference, chief.
Not sure what makes you think I'm upset. I'm agreeing with you, you really dodged a bullet here. Just thinking about the tragedy you narrowly avoided ... wow. I'm gonna hug my kids extra tight tonight.

I have no idea.

People who bash things because they can't understand why others enjoy it is beyond me. If you have never bashed the sport before good for you.

Nothing wrong with not liking a sport. You could put up a poll about any sport here and not find complete agreement.
