World War Z (1 Viewer)

Watched WWZ this weekend. I thought it was a fun popcorn flick. It's just a shame that they didn't just title it "Zombie Takeover" and save the WWZ franchise for an HBO special. Honestly, I don't know why they even paid for the rights to the book other than they thought the title was a cool name.

Serious question, could they still make an HBO series based on the book or is that out the window now because of this?

HBO still can do it. Its called a series reboot. You throw out all the garbage from the previous shows and start fresh.

Could it still be successful with the Walking Dead already?

IMO.. especially with the announcement that the Walking dead is going to do a spin off show.

Possibility they take the "documentary" style from World War Z and implement it in the "Walking Dead" world.

IMO Win - Win.

There isn't an issue with Warner Bros now owning the rights to it, preventing anyone else from using it? How long do those rights last?

I found it confusing that the zombies didn't seem to be eating people. A couple of times they just bit someone and moved on. Isn't that kind of weird in the annals of zombie lore?
i think they wanted to show how the virus was such a fast moving thing. This strarted right at the beginning in the scene where Brad Pitt watches the transition of the "bitten" man from dead to alive i think he counted it out at 12 seconds. Later in the movie in the airplane scene you get the complete picture. They did a great job of this actually, and one of the things I liked about the movie, even though there were several parts you had to suspend reality and just accept. I find the speed of the zombies and the speed of the virus itself even more frightening than a 'brains' and slow movers like in other examples of the genre.

I got that. They made the 12 second point quite obvious it just seemed weird. Pretty sure that is another complete deviation from the book. It is striking to me that I have read that Pitt is a big fan of the book and the adaptation was supposedly a pet project of his but then he makes a film that pretty much has zero relation to the book other than zombies being in both.

World War Z, caught it on BR, it was alright, wife liked it more than I did. I heard they are going to make a parts 2 and 3, big payday ahead for Brad which he will use a a vehicle to get other independent films made much like Clooney did with the Ocean films. You'll do the blockbuster if the studio will help with some other more Oscar worthy pictures.

I thought WWZ was a passion project for Pitt.

It cost over $200M to make that film, a far cry from an indie type film. He is producing and also has a minor role in the upcoming 12 years a Slave, that is the type of stuff I am referencing.

I was referencing the bolded. I think he did WWZ because he really believed in the project, there will no doubt be added benefits but I don't think that was his motivation for doing WWZ.

just finished this piece of dog dung. Holy crap what an unbelievable terrible movie. It had no direction, no character development and no real story. Its borderline criminal that they use the title WWZ. If I was grading it I couldnt even give it a D. Just horrible acting, horrible story and no entertainment value, just your typical action/horror cliches.

At the very least give us a little understanding about Brad Pitts character

Big zombie fan, loved the book, the movie was just ok. It's not World War Z.
no to get into a pissing match with you and I respect your opinion but holy hell that movie was a long way from "okay". Really rushed and no direction IMO

but I get what you are saying

yeah, probably ok is giving it too much credit. I think the Jerusalum scene gets it that. That was pretty cool.

I actually really liked it up until then. I've never read the book but enjoyed the movie until Jerusalem. After that, it completely went off the rails.

Well, there's absolutley zero connection to the book. So many fans waited years after hearing the initial announcement of the movie. Most knew it couldn't be done in a 2 hour movie and were right. I just watched it with no connection and got a few fun moments, Jerusalem being one of them. The movie is hardly worth debating the merits of. It'll be long forgotten, sadly.

At least I can read the book without any of it being spoiled. Who screwed it up so bad? Pitt? Sounds like they used the name to sell it.

Oh yeah, there's nothing in the movie that's in the book. I don't know the whole story behind the movie but I think Pitt actually liked the book and pushed for it. There were years of starts and stops so I'm sure he did his best but just gave in to the big production just to get it done.

Pitt is only talking about it now. No script is being written as of yet.

Finally saw this last night and enjoyed it a lot. Haven't read the book and typically not a fan of the "fast" moving zombies but I really emjoyed this film. A lot of great visual work (the blown-up plane and the destruction of Jerusalem at the top) I was shocked when I saw Matthew Fox's name in the credits. I had no idea he was even in the film. Then after reading about the original script I see he was supposed to have a much larger role. Based on what I read, I think they made the right call going with Lindleof's ideas and veering away from super-hero Pitt. Sounds like they're going to make a sequel and if so I'm definitely in.

I saw Matthew Fox for a few seconds when he sat down with Jerry Lane's family in the ship's mess hall. You could easily miss it if you blinked.Having watched Hard Boiled recently, that kind of shoot out would be what I expect to see if the world turns zombie.

I blinked. Totally blown away when I saw his name in the credits.

I knew the film had a troubled history but I had avoided reading too much about it since I didn't want to be spoiled for when I eventually saw it. But I'm catching up on a lot of the film's history now. It's pretty incredible everything that went on from the re-writes to Pitt and the director not talking and so forth.

That kind of thing happened with many films, but maybe with less money at stake. Someone exposed this about World War Z for a reason.

Oh absolutely. This isn't a unique story by any stretch. I just enjoy this type of stuff. I'm a sucker for behind-the-scenes info about films. :)

I checked his IMDB page. Who is Matthew Fox and why do people care if he was in WWZ?

The movie was terrible for something with the title WWZ and it would have been just mediocre if it had any other zombie apocalypse title.

Wasn't he on Friends?

Dude, he was the bad guy in Speed Racer!

I set aside the title of the movie and watched it just for what it was: a zombie flick.

And it sucked. I want my 2 hours back :(

It's a zombie movie. What kind of plot do you guys want? It was intense and had tons of action. I don't get the outrage.

It was not intense, particularly if you read the book, it was just fast paced which is not the same thing.

We didn't read the book. We're talking about the movie. When you can show me one oboe that was exactly the same as the book you can complain all day.

The MOVIE is called World War Z. That's it.

I am not sure what you are talking about, I'm not really a fan of classical music.

Oh c'mon Chaka , you're a smart dude, you know what I was trying to say.The movie wasn't horrible. It obviously wasn't what you were expecting , but at the same time, has any movie ever lived up to the book ?

The fact that the movie was fast paced and not intense, which was my point (you're a smart dude too, y'know) has little to do with the fact that the movie didn't live up to the book.

My point is that it wasn't a very compelling film on it's own and it is even worse in light of the book.

And most films that adapt from literature at least try to keep some of the key elements from the book in the film. The only thing WWZ had in common with the book was that a segment occurred in Israel and one occurred in North Korea (almost nothing that happened in those segments was close to similar). But over 90% (well over) of what you see on screen did not happen on the book. Honestly the only reason I can see that they gave the film the WWZ title is to increase profits by drawing upon a built in audience which, in light of the product they gave us, feels like an egregious and shameful money grab.

I thought it was really good. Unfortunately I started watching last night while drinking, fell asleep, woke up and finished it this morning. But as a result I have no idea if the movie was 90 minutes or 3 hours. It felt really short and pretty linear but that's probably more because of how I watched it. Nowhere near as good as Legend but a decently fun movie.

Finally saw it and thought it kind of sucked

First 30 minutes has good action

The rest was ridiculous...let's just say that Zombies were not my biggest suspension of disbelief...

in the C-/D+ territory for me...

It wasn't all that good. Then again, I am a zombie lover and have been for a while. Probably seen 100 zombie flicks.

My views are pretty skewed. I think most people would actually like the movie.
