WR Calvin Ridley, TEN (4 Viewers)

Zay Jones...Christian Kirk......Calvin Ridley.....Travis Etienne....and Trevor figuring things out.
Jags could dominate The AFC South for the foreseeable future.
They're kind of all complimentary players. Who is the #1 going to make a big play in a big game?
I don't have a prob with the AFC South prediction- probably win it- but I doubt it's dominant or they do much in the playoffs.

They've added a few young players on D that grab my attention. I would project better things for the D in the future.

As far as Ridley- I remember thinking he's always hurt or stinks when I need him for FF and does well the other weeks. Traded him and he did well all year for the new team.

I like all the other WRs in Arizona better than Kirk.
Zay Jones was about out of the league and a bust and he shocked me this year. Totally impressed 4-5 games.

Not sure how to word it, just...if they had a true stud WR, it would all fall in line as a fantastic group

Kirk was #10 overall at WR entering Week 16, he stunk in the FF Playoffs mostly
He was awesome during the regular season vs his draft spot
Just my .02

Right. He's absolutely had some hot games and I was impressed then. You think he's a stud and can beat the top CBs- regularly, often enough?

I like ETN much more than a complimentary player.

I’m not sure the WR corps has a true alpha - Kirk & Jones flip flopped for weekly relevance.

Until I see Ridley play I’m not going to assume he’s the WR1 there.

It's an excellent question.

He's one of the very best SLOT-WRs in the NFL and I want to be very clear about this. Most of the top NFL WRs are not slot guys. Folks love to toss around the word "slot receiver" and sometimes the top WRs line up in the slot but most do not make a habit of it. Kirk is a true slot guy IMHO. Cooper Kupp would be the gold or the best of all slot types. He lines up there a good deal of the time

You all bring up great points, what could he do if he had a true alpha outside? Ridley is going to be close to 2+ years removed by the time he takes the field, I'll keep an open mind but I wouldn't pencil him in for a career year.

-Kirk has a lot going for him including but not limited to...An up and coming QB and let me ask you this, Miami/JAX, which future is brighter right now? Jax looks like they might have found what they have been looking for at QB. I'm a huge Trevor Lawrence fan, haven't felt this strong since Andrew Luck. I thought he was outstanding in college and I'm happy he is making things go in Jacksonville, leads me to my next point.
-MoP big Doug Pederson fan, guy processes at a different rate than others, not sure what happened post Super Bowl but sign me up for that ride if it includes a Super Bowl, all day every day
-Etienne looks like a playmaker, takes the pressure off the rest of the offense and then you add in Evan Engram who is either better than he could show in New York(shocking) or Lawrence is making him look like a Top 5 Tight End, who knew?

More weapons, less targets but he is the type that can make a defense pay dearly for losing track of him, you gotta love that if you are Trevor Lawrence
-I expect JAX to draft another WR in '23 especially if they find a gift. Lawrence simply needs weapons and a decent OL, load him up. What if Ridley ends up hurt, or Kirk, or whoever, they need a strong young Rookie-WR to grow with Lawrence, now is the time.

He did not improve his stats much from AZ to JAX and yet I don't remember him being Top10 in Arizona.
26 yrs old, #47 overall pick in '18, he has credentials and it's possible he could increase his catch total but he reminds me of Golden Tate
Never going to be a Top 5 or dominant WR but he catches a lot of balls and is productive, especially when you can draft him after the big names and slide him in as a WR3/Flex, that's where he makes you money

Agreed. The trio of Jones, Kirk and Ridley are a solid but unspectacular group. I wouldn’t be surprised to see JSN or Boutte in Jacksonville next year. Either one could be the alpha.

I’m lacking a top WR and so offered Algeier to the RB needy team that has Ridley. Rejected. Considering offering Akers. So hard to work out what his value is, but I saw it as a chance to grab a possible top 24 WR for cheap

I love the fit if he is close to the same player. Was able to sneak him on waivers before he was traded so looking forward to seeing how he looks this coming off-season. My guess would be he is a better football player than Zay Jones walking into the building and Zay had a nice year with Trevor.

Ridley will be a high end WR2 next year. Ascending QB with good but not great target competition. He figures to finish around WR16-24 in my early rankings. Jones, Kirk, etc…can play but Ridley is a class above. A big time buy candidate, IMO.

The lingering questions, while valid, are all mental and procedural, not based on an ability to play.

That's a lot of good info.
I like Kirk and all their WRs. I have big doubts though if they can make a play when the game is on the line. Can they beat a tough matchup?
It's also entirely possible this is irrelevant because once the season hits game eight or so, they are playing against at least one injury reolacement at CB. Maybe that's enough. Maybe Zay or even Jones beating the opposing teams 4th or 5th is simply a matchup to exploit.
As far as Engram- I've been pretty obsessed with him this year and Ds are letting him catch it pretty often. They've got a not good S or LB on him while their best defenders are on the WRs or approaching the LOS. Lawrence is wise to take that matchup but....this is a whole nother discussion- is that enough? Does Lawrence have to push his WRs to still make splash plays?
Back to WRs- today, the Titans will start a top CB then a rookie CB with a lot of fight and great positioning but he's not "there" yet. He may be special in a year or two but now he's beatable. The third WR is a UDFA or traveling veteran. The Jags WR depth should make it easy to complete passes to two WRs and it's just gonna be "where's Byard" and don't let Lawrence get hit.
Next week they probably face a far better D with far better CBs. That ought to be the first test to "does depth overcome not having an alpha?"
I'm not a fan of some contracts and got a few issues, but I like this style of building a team. Lawrence has to develop his progressions and reads well because it's very possible the third or fourth WR has the favorable matchup. It pushes his development in a simple gentle way. A lot of times teams have a gem and three shmoos at WR and we expect the young WR to get it to the gem often even though everyone in the free world knows it's going there. This Jags style is so much better

There are still people that wonder if he'll be reinstated/come off suspension. I'm a little concerned of that. I thought we'd all be expecting his return.
I've been dead wrong on Pete Rose for like forty years or thirty or geesh it's a long time. I sure hope there's no issue with allowing Ridley to return

Algeier is only pretty good at a star position. He'll always be possibly replaced creating apprehension during trades.
I've already seen and jumped on the Henry to ATL bandwagon. They could easily add a top RB in the draft as well.
I'd just enjoy Algeier and try to move other players. He'll never fetch the value he is to you. He came up pretty big a few times but it's always going to be that he could be replaced each off-season.

I’ve seen a couple of mocks with Bijan going to the Falcons. That would throw a significant wrench into the Algeir value.

While I don’t see that happening, I could see one of Mattison, Pollard, etc tier of FA RB going to ATL. He didn’t look special to me, and seems like he’d be easily replaced / muddied with a RBBC.

I completely agree but you don’t know for sure that everyone else might be sensible enough to see it that way until you start offering him out in trades

Ridley owner here without a need for RB and I’d give him for Akers. Not allegier but that’s not a bad offer
I probably agree, but wouldn’t consider Akers until after the draft.

Seem like a great real football situation but if Trevor is spreading it around and Jax is leading / winning more games, is it a great fantasy one?
This is my biggest concern even if Ridley looks all the way back. Some may argue that Ridley's talent would likely result in a more narrow target tree at the expense of Zay and Engram (I am assuming Marvin Jones is gone). It's certainly possible, but seems just as plausible that Trevor has proved that he's capable of not locking in on a receiver. Good for Trevor, but maybe not for everyone.

At the end of the day though, I want to be associated with a good offense and the arrow for the Jags' one is pointing up big time.

Part of why he spreads it around is that he has no dominent receivers. Ridley is way better than Kirk and the rest of the group. Well, assuming his mental health is good.

Pretty cheap investment in dynasty right now. Only 28

How long before he mentally checks out again?
Seems like if he can get close to the level he was at he would have a chance at another decent contract. So as long as he is motivated by money he needs to make this next year count.
That seems as a big if. I’m not convinced he has passion for the game. I’m not convinced he ever plays again.
Interesting take, but not unwarranted. I think he plays and plays well. Time will tell.

Another concern is the Jags drafting a WR day 1 or 2.

I’ve seen quite a few mocks where they take Downs or Flowers.

Again, just mock drafts, so take with a huge grain of salt, but given the age/risks of Ridley, I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see them invest in a WR.

Count me as a naysayer. I think he’ll play - I question if he’ll ever be what he was on his way to becoming in ATL, or even 80% of that.

Yes, accurate. Though I’m not sure if that was ability-related or gambling-related (shaving points, etc) - there were quite a few receptions he left some meat on the bone with - and it seemed like Ryan was hesitant to throw to him after enough of those.

Pretty damn good 2020 season. Only played 5 games in 2021, so seriously doubt there was a big talent drop off in the off season. Probably his mental issues were there all season and didn't just pop up out of the blue

He had 52 targets in 5 games, so doesn't seem like Ryan was that hesitant to goes his way. Ryan also sucked in 2021 which was the start of his downward trend.

Chicken or the egg tho

Ryan has more yards and TDs if Ridley is actually trying to score.

No proof he wasn't trying to score. Just some conspiracty theories that came up after he was suspended for betting the Falcons as part of a parlay in a game he wasn't playing in. If there was substance, legitimate media would have been talking about it, not just some random bloggers looking for clicks.

Ryan sucking was all Ridleys fault? lol

Ain’t a conspiracy - I watched it myself. He tried to not score. Saw it with my own eyes several times.

And yes - when Ryan throws a 60+ yard TD that results in Ridley running backwards and not scoring, that hurts Ryan, obviously.

So he bet a $1500 dollar parlay but does not have the passion to play and make $11m this year and with a shot at $18M a plus after that. Ok.

Gambling can be quite exciting - surely he cared more about that since he cost himself 10s of millions over it.

The 60 yarder that was actually about a 10 yard pass that Ridley breaks tackles on and is heading to the end zone, decides he can't split the defense and then turns it outside and almost scores? Because he sure looks like he was trying to score to me. Maybe he scores if he takes a straight path, but not a sure thing. See that every week in the NFL. I looked at every video posted on my google search and everything I saw was just a guy trying to make a bigger play whenever he took a step backward. One play the blogger posted was soooooooooooo ridiculas to suggest he was trying to lose yards because ran one step back AFTER he broke a tackle to tack on another 10 plus yards before he took the step back. If there is anything defininte, please post a link because I would love to see it. Nothing but a couple bloggers looking for clicks that I can find.

For the most part, your posts are solid and have good information. But if it was that obvious that he was intentially not getting into the end zone when he could have walked in as you state you "saw with your own eyes", there would have been a much bigger story, especially after the gambling allegations came out. The NFL wouldn't have been able to cover it up as you suggested was a possibility in an earlier post. Some media outlet would have run with it if it was that obvious and happened the 5-6 times you suggested in the earlier post.

Count me as a naysayer. I think he’ll play - I question if he’ll ever be what he was on his way to becoming in ATL, or even 80% of that.
I seem to recall he wasn’t doing that well before he check out mentally.N
Yes, accurate. Though I’m not sure if that was ability-related or gambling-related (shaving points, etc) - there were quite a few receptions he left some meat on the bone with - and it seemed like Ryan was hesitant to throw to him after enough of those.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist. In fact I’m vehemently against conspricies.

I’m convinced Ridley was up to something shady. I adds up, could easily be what led to his mental breakdown, and subsequent suspension.

Something felt wonky about that whole saga.

I can’t shake it.

I watched that video. There was nothing I saw that was hinky about Ridley in that video.

What is hinky is his mental health check-out followed by his insanely stupid gambling gaffe (if one wants to minimize it by calling it a gaffe).

I wouldn't give up too much for him. I'd definitely give something up, but not what some of his proponents would want. Calvin Ridley rates around Darnell Mooney and Tyler Lockett in trade value according to FBG, which sounds about right to me. He's 28 and coming off of all this stuff.

But this is what makes winners, winners. Buying low and such.

Maybe that’s the answer. I don’t know but having rostered him the year before and that year, something was way way off in his decision making & focus.

Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said the team "feels strongly" suspended WR Calvin Ridley will be reinstated this offseason.

Ridley sat out 2022 after being traded to Jacksonville and can apply for reinstatement after the Super Bowl. There's no timeline for when Ridley will be back but the NFL should make a decision quickly given the conditional picks involved. The Jaguars expect Ridley to be reinstated, returning as early as April for OTAs. Atlanta would get a fifth-round pick if Ridley returns before the draft and a sixth-rounder if his reinstatement is delayed.

Jags Off-Season Mailbag

Q: Any word at all on how Calvin Ridley looks physically right now? Is he ready to play again?

A: I can report from a source with knowledge of Ridley's workouts as of late that the veteran receiver looks "in prime shape." Ridley has earned rave reviews from those who have seen him workout and prepare for his NFL return. He will be more than ready to play, I beleive.

Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley is eligible to apply for reinstatement following his year-long suspension.

Ridley was banned for "at least" one season after it was revealed he bet on games during a five-day period in November 2021 while away from the Falcons. A savvy Jaguars front office went out and acquired Ridley for a fifth-round pick at last year's trade deadline with the expectation he'll be reinstated for the 2023 season, which would immediately bolster a wide receiver room that surprised in 2022. In four seasons, Ridley has appeared in 49 regular season games, catching 248 passes for 3,342 yards and 28 touchdowns. Ridley stepped away from the team after a wildly unproductive start to 2021 (31-281-2), but should be in prime position for a bounce back once reinstated.

I got him as a throw in during a trade last year, I need WR help. I need to hit one any number of guys to be good, Ridley, S Moore, Doubs, Wan'Dale, R Moore, Osborn, Shakir, Bell, Marshall.....can any of those be a good WR2 play in 2023? Ridley seems to have the best chance. Olave is my 1, and I sure hope NOLA gets a QB. Got pick 1.03 so can add a WR there as well. IDK how I got in such a bad spot with WRs.

Yes Ridley is strong WR2 and has a shot to be your WR1.

I think he has a better chance to never be relevant again

Anyone who already owns him doesn't think this way

The way I think, that he probably won't be relevant
