WR Chris Godwin, TB (3 Viewers)

On his way to an All Pro season. Just so mad he was in the game.
Everyone is defending Bowles on this now. Team still had a shot. Within 10. Already was successful with 1 onside kick. Do you just give up in that situation?
No timeouts down 10 with 40 seconds left. Baltimore win prob was 99.9. Yea you take a knee and go home. You spend the whole preseason benching guys, training camp is modified to not allow a ton of hitting so people don’t get hurt, these idiot coaches spend 19 hours a day in their office looking for an advantage and then you do this? It’s reckless and idiotic.
In 2022, Jets were down 30-17 with 1:50 left to play. Conventional wisdom said take a knee and call it a day. Jets won 31-30 cause they kept playing till the final whistle.

These guys get paid millions to win games. They are not giving up on any of them if there's a sliver of a chance to win.

:kicksrock: looks like Ridley goes back into the lineup.
The bucs look too good this year to not trade for a WR now.

Who is still on the block?

There was a report over the weekend that teams are inquiring about Kupp who would be the perfect fit for the TB offense. But that seemed a bit like a click-bait report as there doesn’t appear to be confirmation that the Rams have any interest in trading him.

Yup. The coaches especially. If Godwin was sat he'd be answering why his best player wasn't on the field while the team was fighting to come back. The criticism is 20/20 and is still wrong.

Wonder if they will be calling the Jets about Mike Williams. He’s not a Godwin replacement but could be a good outside WR for them especially if Evans misses significant time

So the Steelers have been looking for a WR, Now you add two other potential playoff teams (SF and TB) into the mix for a WR.

You’re right, blowing your season for 0.01 chance to win against a non-conference opponent was way better.

And yes, they should’ve just handed the ball off and ran it out.

If they have a mad scramble to get back to within 10, use up their timeouts to get the ball back with 1:34 and then decided to pull everyone and run the clock out, you're saying as a TB fan you would not be cursing his name as a gutless coward right now?

Right. And what would have been the point in trying to score with 3 minutes left, or 6 minutes left, if you are just gonna then give up after scoring.

Look you don’t have to believe me but I was driving home from the game with my buddy listening to it on the radio and about 45 seconds before the injury I said “why is Baker and Chris still in there we need these guys”. Then about a minute later my friend (watching it on his phone) tossed his phone to the floor and said he’s out for the year. The game was over. There was no chance to win.

Put the backups in down 41 to 18 or whatever and go nuts scrambling around with those guys to pad the stats. That’s all you’re doing there. When I walked out of the stadium with 8 minutes left I figured Trask was going to get some game reps.

Well, I agree. If I have a good team with a good record, and find myself down by 24 points late in the game, I am personally fine with benching all key players and just losing the game, moving on the the next game.

However, I can not fathom calling into question the decision making to NOT do that, and to actually try and win. We've all seen comebacks before, even in unlikely situations. Down 30 with a minute left, sure. But down 10 with a minute left is literally 2-3 plays aware from a tie game or taking the lead. As Dez mentioned earlier in the thread, our Browns lost to the Jets in a quite similar circumstance when up two scores with just over a minute left.

The guys saying the coach should have quit b/c it was very obvious Godwin was definitely going to get injured.

Can I get the lotto numbers for Powerball this week?

Aikman and Buck were both insinuating that a bad injury was going to happen. I believe Capella. I thought the same exact thing and as soon as Godwin caught the ball was basically hoping he'd get down.

This was not a lightning strike. This was very real. Aikman was talking about Jimmie Johnson sending guys on CB blitzes to act as a deterrent to teams trying to come back. It was implied that the QB could get really hurt. That was his point BEOFRE THE GODWIN THING HAPPENED.

I mean, this isn't rocket science or Powerball. You're honestly not even close.

This is the point. Down ten with 1:30 to go is the fool’s gold. They weren’t winning the game.

It's football. Telling a national audience that you cornerback blitz as a deterrent isn't because it's a strategy that works so dang well in preventing yardage or a win. It's saying "don't get your QB maimed in a fruitless endeavor." You've got to send your receivers out and nobody stays into chip. Once a team is CB blitzing up that much with that much time left, they've been told to lay lumber and are being coached that way. Acknowledge and drop the pissing contest.

Now Godwin is out for the year because you can't conceive of any other way to play and that "players play"? My ***. Why sit them all TC and exhibition games then?

Because coaches don't get fired for losing preseason games.

They don't get fired for painting the herring red, either.

They do get fired for going 6-11 though which is a more distinct possibility with one of your best players gone for no reason now. Not to mention they lost Winfield on a meaningless play at the end of a week 1 blowout against Washington.

I don’t know.
The coaching staff needs to take some blame for losing two great receivers in the same game. Theres no way Evans should have been in either, and he ended up really hurt. And everything that could have gone right for Tampa did and they still lost by 10. There was no way they were winning that game.

Not everybody is defending Todd Bowles. I think Smails is mistaken. I'm certainly not. I didn't buy the two onsides kicks rule thing, either. I was blaming him before that was even an inkling in the public's eye. Never should have had Godwin in there. I don't know about Evans.

I mean, you've gotta play the guys even if the game is out of hand at times, but not this time and not down by that and not already having lost Evans.
Evans has nothing to do with Godwin. It was possible that Mayfield throws a TD and they already recovered an onside kick. If so just needed a FG. The game was not over. It’s not as if they were down 3 scores. I know you’re upset but most coaches in the league would have played that out with all of their starters. Maybe you don’t agree with Bowles, but Ryan Clark and others did. Joe Buck doesn’t count in my book

Any internet doctors weigh in how limited Godwin will be for 2025? Something less than 100% for the start of the season, even if available?

Also, a free agent and Tampa Bay has some young guns that are going to get their chance. Would be great to have him full go for training camp if he's no longer a Buc.

Sounds like a selective citation of authority. The authority I was talking about was Aikman, who seemed to realize that there was a CB blitzing and that guys get killed when teams are playing to lay lumber. That's a lot better inferential reasoning than Ryan Clark's "because you play that way." Perhaps Clark needed to be reminded of Denver and how he didn't just "play that way" because it would have resulted in serious injury given the conditions at the time and place, i.e., the specific conditions that one player needs in the particular moment.

Evans is relevant to the discussion insofar as adroit coaches look ahead and see that being down that much means you might want to wave the white flag.

Not only that, the NFL runs the way Ryan Clark insists it doesn't all. the. time. Ever watch the end of a blowout?? Usually results in a quarterback either getting teed off on, or his backup tossing checkdowns to a backup running back. You can certainly play it more than one way. Bowles chose the "man up" way and cost his team his star WR. For the year.

Giddy up!

Nobody quits down 10 with 1:30 to go. Not a single coach. This is pure armchair quarterbacking

Correct. Its not rocket science. Its football. People get hurt all the time.

Remember when Dre Greenlaw tore his achilles just jogging onto the field in the playoffs last year.

Not saying this is "you" per se, but often times you'll find the same guys complaining the league has gone too soft and its "flag football now" are the same guys losing their minds when a guy gets hurt.

Bc fantasy football of course. I've only actually met 2 real life Bucs fans IRL

But carry on!

And we'd already seen Lamar muck a backward pass and Flowers get hit in the back with a snap. Stuff happens in these games.

I'm fairly consistent about this stuff. I'm for the more modern approach. Hit hard, don't wishbone QBs like Siragusa, and you're fine—getting hurt is a happenstance. But don't lead with your head. Easy stuff that it seems they still can't police correctly because of the speed of the game.

Every week it seems I'm in here debating Todem about a hit on Sunday night that he thinks should be legal and I'm dead set against.

So pretty consistent. The weight on the QB thing is one thing that irks a little, but not as much as your average fan because when Fat Tony did it, he was chickenboning Gannon and it was dirty.

There was no sliver of a chance to win. There were 40 seconds left down two scores.
They got the ball back with 1:34. Just quit then?
You’re right, blowing your season for 0.01 chance to win against a non-conference opponent was way better.

And yes, they should’ve just handed the ball off and ran it out.
If they have a mad scramble to get back to within 10, use up their timeouts to get the ball back with 1:34 and then decided to pull everyone and run the clock out, you're saying as a TB fan you would not be cursing his name as a gutless coward right now?
Right. And what would have been the point in trying to score with 3 minutes left, or 6 minutes left, if you are just gonna then give up after scoring.
Put the backups in down 41 to 18 or whatever and go nuts scrambling around with those guys to pad the stats. That’s all you’re doing there. When I walked out of the stadium with 8 minutes left I figured Trask was going to get some game reps.
This is the point. Down ten with 1:30 to go is the fool’s gold. They weren’t winning the game.
Nobody quits down 10 with 1:30 to go. Not a single coach. This is pure armchair quarterbacking

It was being said on the national broadcast to pack it in and go home by a former QB who had to retire because of concussions. How is this news? How is this the industry standard now that we're supposed to buy?

Said as he sits in his comfy booth chair with no fear of being fired. If he's on the sidelines with a chance to get a w, he's doing the same damn thing.

That’s not the point. The point is that they should have quit earlier. They were never going to win. They got EXTREMELY lucky and STILL lost by 10.

You want to lose a locker room? Quit early and give up. How can you tell your team to never quit and play 60 minutes then quit yourself? It doesn’t fly. It was improbable but not impossible. Jump ball catch in the end zone and then another onside kick. Don’t know why people are insisting the game was over with 1:30 to go and down 10. It wasn’t. Quitter’s mentality.

:popcorn:Always interesting when someone digs their heels in to debate seemingly the whole internet.

Wow. If you're referring to me, perhaps you need a different internet. WaPo and NYPo both asking the question and noting the criticism. I've got a bunch of people on my side. Not sure what on earth you're talking about.

Godwin just broke a 55 yard catch/run last week. Improbable? Sure. But, not impossible.

Weird things can happen. Especially late in a comeback like that.

No one losing does this. Who the heck pulls all their good players down by 10?
I think he/cappy mean that the starters should have been pulled at 6:32 down 41-18.

That doesn't seem unreasonable

Yeesh. I watch the first half, scoffing as Baker and Godwin continue to pour overkill points into the coffers of my league-leading team. Then I go to the movies. Then I come home and open this thread. "Oh, his foot fell off."

I expected Trask at that point. But, once you leave them out and score twice to make it interesting you don’t pull everyone with two minutes left.

wouldn't have pulled everyone, but after losing Evans, i'd have pulled Godwin
Easy to say that now.

What’s the point at that point? Why not just pull everyone? You really think you’re going to successfully mount this already highly improbable comeback without your best offensive weapon?

Schefter “The tackle that Chris Godwin was hurt on appears to have all the elements of a hip drop tackle. The play is now under review, per sources, and if it is officially determined to be a hip drop tackle, Ravens LB Roquan Smith would be subject to a fine.”

An eye for an eye. I've been playing FF long enough to know this is what happened. Flowers also got a hip drop tackle Q1. So Roquan does it right back to Godwin Q4. I do not own Godwin. But both sides at fault here. Flowers might miss a game or two. He should be questionable at best on the injury report.

Just pitiful and stupid. Yeah the players don't play for us. But nothing was called after the hip drop tackle on Flowers. So of course the Ravens had to pay back.
Daily FF betters and prop betters are the biggest impacts.

I guess the biggest factor for why I didn't agree with Tampa continuing to be aggressive is because the Ravens defenders were flying around out there. Big hits and looking to make a statement.
