WR Cooper Kupp, SEA (1 Viewer)

For a team that could use a veteran presence in the locker room and for practices it makes sense. Houston definitely feels like a great spot for him. But from a talent perspective and where I think Kupp is at now in his career, there are some better options in the draft IMO.

It depends which direction this team takes, and I write this understanding a lot of people (potentially Kupp included) would be unhappy about this, but I could totally see the Browns in on this. A similar set of circumstances led to the team acquiring Cooper.

Maybe, but if they’re trying to trade Garrett are they rebuilding?

If Garrett is traded, then I think a domino effect results and yes this becomes a rebuild. I'd put the odds of that happening somewhere under 50% though.

New England.

This guy reminds me of Wes Welker. Great until one day he wasn’t. Has he hit that wall? Maybe, or maybe not, but probably.

Great call. Maye looked even better than Stroud down the stretch (without pointing fingers at who/what was to blame for Houston's sputtering offense at the end of the season). Even if NE drafts one of the better rookie prospects, Kupp could easily start and lead in targets there and it wouldn't surprise me.

From Greg Bedard's BSJ article today:

3. I was initially a no on the Patriots acquiring Cooper Kupp at some point this offseason. And then I heard former Rams LT Andrew Whitworth on with Zolak & Bertrand.

"Look at the situation that's happened in LA with Cooper Kupp, his impact, how amazing he's been," Whitworth said. "That entire room of wide receivers will be different for the rest of their careers, because they got a chance to spend five minutes with Cooper Kupp, much less all the years he's been there. So Puka (Nacua) has been trained and prepared from all that time that he spent with Cooper to be exactly who they need Puka to be. That's how you have to be to be able to sustain success.

"Cooper Kupp is the equivalent to having Sean McVay on the field. Cooper Kupp could walk in a room right now and run an offense… like he’s that intelligent. He understands the game that much.

"Like, he wants to sit in a room and dissect film and break it down and all those things. He’s teaching the receivers, he’s helping the tight ends and the lineman. ... His mindset and that kind of stuff and just being valuable for that quarterback. I’ve always said this, it’s what happened in Chicago with Caleb Williams. Who was on that roster with a young quarterback that you go… where’s the veteran on the offensive team that’s the stable teacher-type guy who’s in his ear? Every play, every huddle, 'Hey man, don’t forget about this situation. Don’t forget about getting the ball out right here. Hey, this is a play where the balls needs to come out.' Or a play where you go, 'Hey this is your drop. This is where I’m going to be on the field.' Who are those people in his ear? I know for me in my time with Andy Dalton as a rookie, with Jared Goff as a young player, those things were invaluable, and they would need those things, and they’d give me feedback, 'Hey man, I appreciate you reminding me those little things in the huddle.' That stuff is invaluable."

Not only is exactly that Drake Maye needs, but that's what that receivers room needs in an even bigger way. Imagine Ja'Lynn Polk following Kupp around, learning from him.

Yeah, I'm on board and I don't even care how many games he plays.

A team with a QB drafted in the last 2 seasons that is young and would prosper from Kupp's leadership in the huddle
A team that will still go out and Draft a WR in the 1st round this year that will be able to learn from Kupp in the film room and on the field

Patriots and Broncos sound right, plus I doubt the Rams want to send Kupp to another NFC team like the Falcons or even the Bucs

Rams paying decent money for Devante Adams has me thinking maybe Kupp really is cooked? :-(
I don't know, Adams took pretty below market value in my opinion. He's also a very different type of WR than Kupp. Adams wins your sideline deep shots that even peak Kupp wasn't great at.

I still think Kupp has a decent amount to offer, he's just a clear slot guy, and the Rams I think felt he and Puka overlapped too much. Kupp still looked like at least a solid #2 WR for the majority of last season.

It was a contractual wash. Almost exactly what they are paying Davante for the year for what they would have owed Kupp to keep him.

I think they view him as pairing better with Puka as Travdogg is saying but I think more to do with fact Davante gives them a better option vs man coverage.

They save $7.5 million cutting him before June 1st but they’re gonna want to spend that $, so I expect it sooner than later.

At this point in their careers Adams looks like he has more to offer than Kupp.

Seems like too much overlap with Ladd and JSN. I could see the Jags since they let Kirk and Engram go, the Broncos, or maybe Texans to replace Diggs.
Jags & Texans both signed WRs this week, no?

Maybe it has been a wild day and I might have missed it and that certainly can change things. I would have to see how they signed.

Looks like the Jags signed Dynami Brown for one year 10 million. I wouldn't think that blocks Kupp.

Texans signed Justin Watson who is just depth.

Right, following the Kirk acquisition, which was a somewhat sizable deal. Strikes me they’ve made their splash at receiver.

Jags still might be in the market though.

The fact that no one has bothered to try to deal for Kupp either means
1. Rams are asking too much
Or
2. Teams believe Kupp is washed or not a good fit.

I could see the Chargers being in on him.

Seattle too, maybe.

My friends like the Niners to pick him up cheap, I just don’t see that happening.

There isn't really much overlap with McConkey. McConkey wins at every level, both inside and out.

Sure but he's better out of the slot and played from that position most of the time, more then Kupp has played outside of the slot since 2019. I think that's the role they prefer to play Ladd.

Sounds like a Josh McDaniels kind of player.
The welker/amendola/edelman/kupp progression is obvious, but I'm afraid state income tax and rebuild status will prevent the dream from being realized.
I think a bigger issue is Kupp is a west coast guy with a family and little kids. He's already made close to $100M, so not sure he would want to move 3,000 miles away when there will undoubtedly be suitors a lot closer to where he lives currently. IIRC, Kupp was due something like $55M over the next two seasons. NE could have taken on that contract for a 7th round pick (and may have been able to get the Rams to put up some of the money). The Pats are said to have an interest in Kupp, but who knows how much they want to pay him.

So much depends on whether Kupp is looking to chase dollars or rings. Ideally, he finds a situation with both, but that ideal may not be his reality. I'd guess he's looking at only 1-2 yrs in actual money commitments, unless he finds a really desperate team.

- Chargers, Lions and Vikings: contending teams with a lot of cap space

- Niners, Pats, Cards, Raiders, Seahawks - maybe Cowboys?... Serious cash potential ($10 MM+ per), but downshift contending expectations

- Chiefs, Broncos, Ravens, Commandos: contenders with need, who could pay on the cheap(ish)

On that note, I'm thinking the NE contingent in Houston with Casserio and Caley would like to relive those two slot WR days with Kirk and Kupp. Just hope Demeco gets off his DL/LB signing escapade and opens up to signing another WR.

Surprised he isn't signed by now.
Technically, teams were not permitted to talk to him up until right before free agency officially started when he was released, as he was under contract to the Rams. If there are 12 or more teams interested in him, he's probably weighing the plusses and minuses of each team and each offer. Unless all the numbers haven't been fully reported yet, there are still 22 teams with $25+ million in cap space for this year (including 12 at $40M+). Is there any really need to expedite signing somewhere? Only a trickle of FA signings came in the past couple of days.

True. He probably can take his sweet time since now the market for WRs is going to fall off the cliff with the likes of Diggs, Cooper, etc.
