WR Courtland Sutton, DEN (2 Viewers)

Courtland Sutton caught 4-of-5 targets for 32 yards and one touchdown in the Broncos’ Week 1 loss to the Raiders.

Sutton was unable to garner a large target market share in the absence of fellow wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, a trend that continues into the new season from last year. He saved his fantasy day with a nifty grab along the side of the end zone just before half but was ultimately an afterthought on a night the Broncos struggled to attack the deep areas of the field. Sutton will look to improve upon his modest showing when the Broncos host the Commanders in Week 2.

Worth holding after the past couple weeks? His final numbers didn't look terrible, but hard to imagine trusting him much ROS unless things change a lot. Russ spreads it around and the offense isn't that good

Yeah the stats are misleading on the box score. I think he had three of his receptions on that last drive.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing; they were still very much in the game on those drives (although I thought the one right before the Hail Mary wasn't a catch).

I just don't think he or the Broncos offense look very good

They put up 400 yards and 33 points.

And that catch looked good, he dragged that toe.

I was going to say that for a team that scored 33, they really didn't look that good.

Maybe I'm just scarred from last year, but Russ is not impressing me

Courtland Sutton caught 8-of-11 targets for 95 yards and a touchdown in the Broncos’ Week 3 loss to the Dolphins.

Sutton lost two drive-killing fumbles while carrying the football like a loaf of bread — something Dolphins defenders seemed to notice. Sutton once again led the Broncos in targets, and may have established himself as the team’s No. 1 receiver over Jerry Jeudy, who was invisible against Miami. A Denver offense that will continue to be forced to drop back and throw could make Sutton an interesting WR2 play going forward. He gets a Week 4 matchup with the horrific Bears defense.

The D is so bad for Denver you know the O is going to have to air it out.

Stories abound about Sutton being disgruntled and not appearing at voluntary workouts due to contract situation. Trade rumors also getting re-ignited by Cecil Lammey, Benjamin Allbright and others.

The below report from fairly reliable Mike Klis may calm the waters.

Per source, Courtland Sutton had offseason ankle surgery. Injury occurred in 2023 finale at Raiders. Doesn't seem like team or Courtland is concerned. Team picked up his $2M guarantee option in March. He has been working out daily in Florida.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly looking for a veteran wide receiver to line up alongside George Pickens. And until now, Denver Broncos' Courtland Sutton seemed like an option they could explore.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Broncos have received multiple trade calls from other teams but have no intentions of trading Sutton at this time. Sutton hasn't shown up for voluntary workouts to start the offseason program, but the team still believes he'll be on the roster in 2024 (i.e. not a "cut candidate").

[Original quoted tweet from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN: The #Broncos have received multiple trade inquiries on wide receiver Courtland Sutton, per sources. The Broncos do not plan to trade Sutton]

The Steelers have looked into options throughout the NFL Draft and seem to be locked in on adding another starter next to Pickens. Sutton may be off the table for now, but if he remains away from the team, he could be an name worth monitoring after draft weekend.

Any truth to this or just CTESPN?

Broncos beat reporters continue to shoot this down...

REPORT: Courtland Sutton is in “good standing” with the Broncos and “there’s no plans to trade him”

I think Benjamin Allbright posted a cryptic post "Reunited and it feels so good". I think some thought that to mean Russ and Sutton. I believe he was actually referring Bo Nix and Franklin.

Nah. He's talking about Sutton/Russ. It's his style to try and be dramatic.

Why are the Broncos wanting to hold onto Sutton? Mims and Franklin are there now. Get something for Sutton and more forward.
There are a couple of reasons. 1. Sutton is proven. He played pretty well last season, and if you are going to have a rookie quarterback, you want a proven player at the position. 2. He is a big-body guy and very different from Mims and Franklin. Josh Reynolds is also different from Sutton. 3. The contract is a solid contract for a player like Sutton. I understand Sutton does not like his contract, but there is not a lot he can do about it. I think the Broncos should give him a small bump to make him feel a little better, but they do not have to go all in on Sutton, just a bit more guarantees on the existing contract. He has very little guaranteed money on his deal left for the next two years.

The connection between Bo Nix and Courtland Sutton is growing. Nix hit the veteran twice on deep routes during the last team period and also hit Lil’Jordan Humphrey on the sideline after scrambling to his right.

@32BeatWriters
“Nix threaded the throw between two Packers defenders, another example of his growing connection with Denver’s veteran receiver.
Sutton did not participate in the Broncos’ offseason program as he negotiated a reworked contract with the team, but it hasn’t kept him from having a strong impact in camp. His work in the middle of the field has been particularly notable for a team that didn’t utilize that area efficiently enough last season.”

Another takeaway from today: The Nix-to-Sutton connection is growing. The veteran WR obviously wasn’t around in the offseason program, but he and the rookie QB are making up for last time.

Nix said last week: “I feel very comfortable when he’s out there.”

I'm thinking about 75/950/7. He's an average WR3 play or a + Flex.

Wilson to Nix might be a downgrade initially, but if Nix is willing to run Payton's system on schedule, I think its a statistical bump for the WRs. The Broncos losing Jeudy should shift some targets Sutton's way as he is alone at the top as their best WR option. He should still get solid red-zone looks.

Isn't Wilson's problem that he struggles throwing to the middle of the field? It seemed like all of Sutton's targets were jump balls on the sideline or in the end zone. He only had 90 targets all year despite starting 16 games. Maybe Nix can elevate his targets and give him more chances to run after the catch.

Sutton is one of the guys almost guaranteed to exceed his ADP but the guys going before him have more upside so taking him feels like settling.

ACL tear capped his upside. Prior to that he was a bad man, but just lost that little bit of burst that stops him from being a true WR1. He's a great WR2 and an awesome redzone threat, but he could have been much more than he is now.

This guy is easily the WR1 for his team. Those guys have value. The fact you can get him so late is probably the steal of the draft right now.
10TD's last year.

I think he could be this year's Adam Thielen. Rookie QB with only one established high end receiving threat. Sutton will likely be the first read on a lot of plays.

A solid WR1 without a good WR2 on the other side, probably puts Sutton at close to a 23% target rate. 33 pass attempts a game would put him at roughly 7.5 targets a game and 130 on the year. That alone will keep him around the top 20 in targets. Assuming he stays healthy all year.

Reports out of Broncos camp say Tim Patrick has looked good and is developing a connection with Nix.

Its a tough group to project. I think Mims and Franklin with get their deep shots. Josh Reynolds a consistent #3. We know year to year what we're going to get with him.

I think Patrick has talent, but he's being forced into that #2 role. He'll get looks but will never command them.

If we're projecting the Broncos to throw 560 times this year, I just see Sutton eating the largest portion of that pie. RBs might surprise with the amount of targets they get, and maybe Dulcich steps up, but that TE room is underwhelming as well.

What are your yards, receptions and TD projections for Sutton this season?
