WR Davante Adams, LAR (1 Viewer)

Looking to buy low for him... Should I? Or is there a different thread for these questions?

It depends on whether it's redraft or dynasty. Dynasty has the dynasty valuation thread where we talk about players and usually relate it to our team. Redraft is a little trickier because it doesn't have its own dedicated thread.

It's really a question for the assistant coach forum, whereby you ask people to help manage your team.

I hope that helped. There's a lot of grey area in this respect on these boards. Generally, asking if you should buy low is acceptable so long as it doesn't become too specific to your roster.

Buy low right now?
Depends on how low lol

Sorry, but while he will certainly do better than the last several weeks, I just don't see him being more than a mid level #2 type receiver ROS with O'Connell at QB. Lot of those type of guys around.

Edit to add that this is a redraft opinion

Sorry it's redraft. He has Godert who is out untl fantasy playoffs and I offered TE D. Schultz and threw in GB C. Watson who I considered dumping. I have Hock at TE

Only 1 game over 100 yds and a mere 3 TDs all season (none since week 3). He gets targets, but 90% of them are within 5-7 yards of the line of scrimmage. I'd be surprised if Adams finishes the year at a top 15 WR in standard scoring.

I might be on an island, but I think Jimmy G is better for the Raiders in real life and Adams for fantasy football. The past two weeks the Raiders have won in spite of the QB play and had the luxury of playing the Jets and Giants. I don't see this game script working the next two weeks against Miami and KC. I don't know why the organization recognizes McDaniel's play calling was garbage, but didn't give Jimmy a pass and see how he does with the new coaches.

Raiders likely won't win too many more games this season with an absolutely brutal upcoming schedule, and that would probably derail or at least make frustratingly inconsistent, your Devante Adams investment, but it's absolutely the right call for this org to allow their promising rookie QB, who absolutely lit up the preseason, the rest of this season to experience regular-season NFL growing pains. They need to see first-hand whether or not they have something for next year and beyond, particularly heading into analyzing the comparative prospects of one of the deepest college QB classes in a very long time.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Davante Adams (illness, questionable) “is expected to go” in Week 15 against the Chargers.

Adams popped up on Wednesday’s injury report with an illness and was officially listed as questionable. Despite the late designation, whatever bug Adams is dealing with isn’t expected to keep him out of Thursday night’s game. The veteran receiver should be available and can be started as a high-volume play against a struggling Chargers secondary.

New Raiders GM Tom Telesco has insisted he has no plans to trade Davante Adams.
“He’s a Raider,” was Telesco’s unequivocal Tuesday comment at the Combine. Adams has seemed disgruntled for most of his two years in the Mojave Desert, especially before Josh McDaniels was fired last fall. But he appeared to operate with a new energy and enthusiasm under since-promoted interim coach Antonio Pierce. Quarterback remains a major issue headed into the 2024 season, though the Silver and Black seem to be planning to move on from 2023 fill-in man Aidan O’Connell.

Thoughts on him for 24?

He'll turn 32 at the end of the season. When it comes to FF, Age always scares me as much as anything.

He made it through all 17 games last year with bad to terrible QB play. 103 receptions, 1144 yards, 8 Touchdowns. He finished as WR11. That's really impressive considering the QB play around him.

I just worry--the QB play may still be bad. I get the vibe they WANT O'Connell to win/keep the job. Minshew seems to be quite a bit better in my mind, and may help his FF relevance. He hasn't thrown a lot of touchdowns since leaving Jacksonville. I guess he also hasn't had Davante Adams.

And then there's the age. 31 going on 32. Does he have a full season of elite left in him? I've always been a believer in being out a season early rather than staying in a season too late.

Fantasypros has him at WR9. FBG has him at WR10. He just finished at WR11. He's certainly got the talent to break back into the top 5. Does he have the help/?

I think 2023 DJ Moore is my expectation. Same OC, same clear-cut #1 role. I also think Minshew (assuming he wins the job) did a good job keeping an inferior WR in Pittman fed.

My projection:
150 targets
100 catches
1200 yards
8 TDs

Low-end WR1. I'm guessing someone in every league I'm in will like him a little more than me.

Reasonable projections. I especially agree with your last sentence. Name value/history gonna make him go a little sooner than I’m gonna take him.

There’s something to be said about risk/reward for his ranking, obviously. Will he finish WR10? Maybe not.
Will he have a higher chance than most to finish at/near WR10? Personally, I think so.

This is strange. DA was on Receiver and is a consensus 2nd rounder in ADP - yet no discussion on him since mid July. Any hot or lukewarm takes out there? Given that he’s going around two unproven players in London and MH2 I’m surprised there isn’t more back and forth.

I love him if I go WR in the first, but get a bit of the ick if I go RB. I guess that makes him a high end WR2 in my eyes but when I really consider things, it’s probably unwarranted. He’s made his living on craftiness and route running, not speed. These traits tend to hold up longer. I may be underrating him.

I don't think he's lost a step. His 2024 will come down to the aptitude of the Raiders QB(s).

I'll re-post what I said about him vs. Harrison in the Harrison thread:

My case for Adams>Harrison:

Adams has led the NFL in targets over the last 2 seasons. Once the Raiders settled in after firing McDaniels and benching Jimmy G, Adams finished the season with 8-101-1, 1-4 (in that ugly no offense for either team win at KC) 13-126-2, and 5-46-1.

When Getsy was passing game coordinator with Adams in GB, Adams had 115-1374-18 and 123-1553-11 seasons. Sure, those were with Aaron Rodgers, so the 18 TDs is not happening, but 11 isn't unreasonable, and the 110+ catches is very reasonable, as he's had over 100 in 5 of the last 6 years, across 2 teams, 4 QBs, and 3 different play callers. The only season he didn't top 100 catches, he only played 12 games.

Getsy for all his faults, has proven he can build an offense around featuring 1 pass catcher, as DJ Moore put up 96-1364-8 last year, and while Moore is good, he's not the player Adams is. Also, Gardner Minshew fed Michael Pittman (a far inferior talent) 109 catches last season.

I think we are writing off Adams as an elite WR too soon. Frankly, I think we are undervaluing the Raiders in general as they could easily finish 2nd in the AFC West, and Antonio Pierce does give off some Dan Campbell-like culture changer vibes.

I'll add, I think Adams is in the same tier as Puka and Wilson, though I would take those guys higher due to QB. I have Adams WR9.

I'm 100% in the camp he's lost a step, still really good, but not what he was.

I got a few concerns.

I've heard he's unhappy with the current status of his contract. He seemed to get along great with Pierce, his advocating for him might have helped him get the HC job. They hire Getsy who he worked with and my conclusion was they were not going to make him available in a trade, build everything around him, he'd be placated by that and not ask out if the losing starts. Now I feel like if he does not get an extension his discontent will rear itself and he want to be traded before the deadline. So that's a concern, obviously would be close to impossible to not get traded to a team with a better QB but in-season learning a new offense is not usually awesome.

More minor issue because we already know it and it's built into his price is the sub-standard QB play but Meyers is reportedly having an awesome camp and early reports suggest they will be run away leaders in using 12 personnel. So the main thing which saved him last year was the immense target load. Was not particularly efficient for fantasy on a per target basis. If he remains a Raider all year and can get over 10 targets a game still I think he'll be solid to a good value, but despite the presence of Getsy likely wanting to feed him just not sure how you drop a Bowers type into the offense and expect that kind of target load.

Short story for me is he'll need a massive target share to maintain and I fear a reduction and possible new team before the end of the season.

Don't hate him, don't love him, but for sure can't say I'm excited about drafting him. Feel like he'll start well, they'll target him heavily to placate him, then his age, wear and Bowers growth will see start decreasing his usage and effectiveness and again we'll start getting to a point he'll be trade candidate as his frustration mounts(unless they adjust his contract)

DND at his price for me. With ease.

Seeing how Aaron Rodgers is the de facto General Manager of the Jets, I'd imagine that the minute things go south enough in Vegas for Adams to develop anything resembling happy feet, he'll be flying cross-country in a Gotham Green, Stealth Black and Spotlight White Learjet in a New York minute - no matter how the Jets are doing. If things are going well in the BIg Apple, bring on the bestie hired gun for a run at the Title. If not, well...misery does, after all, love company...

In my keeper league, I might be in a situation where I would need to choose between Adams and someone younger and with more upside like London or Nabers for my WR2. His age and Getsy as his OC scares me so I’m finding it hard to pull the trigger on Adams.

bye Felicia

tbh that should not be a hard call - maybe not short term (2024), but you'll be happy you did for years after

I think Adams is being slept on.
All he needs to do to fix that is just roll over. The end is near, see Julio Jones. For some it is gradual, but for others it’s like a ton of bricks. I think it’s the latter for Adams.
Adams is still an elite talent imo. Age has most definitely not taken him out of the conversation as a top 10 WR. It's disappointing he's stuck in such a run oriented O behind a bad QB in Minshew, but he should/will still have games where he absolutely takes over.

You may be right, but when happens, I expect it to be sudden with Adams.

I doubt this is the end for Adams yet. His advanced metrics were still elite last year.

Julio’s body just simply broke down because he was battling so many injuries for much of his career.

Why? His route running is what has given him the edge as a receiver more than speed and they move him around quite a bit. I'd be more worried if he was a 50/50 ball type player like Dez use to be or a speed guy. Same reason Keenan Allen has excelled into his sunset years.

Didn't Adams fight his way OUT of Green Bay?

Management low balled him hardcore before his last year there and they never really recovered after that.
