WR Devaughn Vele, NO (1 Viewer)

To get a 4th after one year of middling play from Vele would've been impressive. Somehow Sean got them to throw in a 7th as a top cherry. Crayons!

4th and a 7th for Vele is incredible. Who benefits from the remaining Denver WRs the most?

I have been on the Bryant wagon the second Payton used a third-round pick on him...from all reports I have seen he is looking good...I just cannot believe Denver got this much for him and a team like the Saints that are about ready to implode are trading draft picks for a player like Vele.

Mims and Franklin are similar to each other and not really competition with Vele. The reason they trade Vele is because Pat Bryant is developing very well and Trent Sherfield will contribute as WR5 on special teams

As a Broncos Fan, I'm extremely Pleased with Mims, Bryant, and Franklin being the future WR group after the clear #1 Sutton eventually retires.

I never feel like any of them have clearly established they're in the lead.

Maybe Engram.

Some have had Olave traded and no they can't with his history and maybe....type trade thoughts since January. Olave to Jets would be so fun- either for Ohio State fans or Michigan fans if it doesn't work out; but either way fun

Engram is the guy that made Vele expendable IMHO. I feel bad for Vele, he is a hard worker that deserves better. Smart move by the Broncos though. Their WR room is looking pretty explosive with Franklin's and Mims' development and they basically flipped a 7th for a 4th after 1 season. A guy like Payton will take that deal all day every day. A 4th can really be used to help your team in an area of need (or as part of another trade).

Sayre Bedinger
Broncos got a 4th in 2026 and a 7th in 2027 for WR Devaughn Vele, who is 27 going on 28 this year. That doesn't mean everything, but that's pretty wild in context with the Saints. That 4th-rounder could be at the top of the round

Recouping the 7th they paid for him last year would've been plenty fair on paper. Getting a high 4th on top of that is Sean Payton just being a nasty boy.

That’s New Orleans as they are currently run. Vele was competent last year. He is 27. I mean cot damn I get a seventh. The four is inexcusable,

Yeah - now is not the time to be parting for cost controlled draft picks if you're the Saints lol. I get Vele is cost controlled for another 2 to 3 years, but that looks like a pretty good pick given up. That or we are really underselling what Vele is capable of.

I think by all accounts the Saints have to be at the beginning of a multi-year rebuild. Vele has talent and can be a productive NFL receiver, but I don't understand the move by the Saints. You already have Olave, Shaheed, Cooks and a bunch of upside/experienced backups on top of a capable TE room. At the least, they could have used the 4th on a similarly talented WR in next year's draft if they felt they needed to upgrade the position. This trade isn't as bad as last year's Dallas/Mingo trade because Vele can actually play the NFL WR position, but considering where the franchise is and all the areas of need, it's close.

Sean Payton just said that three teams inquired with specific interest in Vele

Two of those teams came back with multiple serious offers, which is why the price was higher than a typical roster cutdown trade. Plus Payton had every intention of keeping Vele on the roster (i.e. the Broncos weren't "shopping" him)

Well….good things first.

Vele is a good kid, from everything I hear he’s a good clubhouse guy too. Very coachable. Big body, big target, great hands.

But….theres a reason why he was drafted in the seventh round. This guy will never be a star. Never be a #1 WR. At best he’s a complimentary piece for a playoff team that can afford to part with a 4th (with this being the Saints it can be argued it’s basically a low third).

I would have felt a lot better if it was a couple of 6th round picks. A team like the Saints can’t go throwing around high capital draft picks like I throw chips on the roulette table while downing Jack Daniel’s barrel proof.

He will be a much better “real life” player than fantasy player. As a fan, I’m excited he’s on the team.

This is the question to ask

I also heard this on local radio. Can't remember if 92.5 or 104.3

Wouldn’t surprise me if he was a solid power slot option for the Saints now that I think about it. They had the other roles filled but this seemed like a need. I wonder if Vele was seriously underdrafted and put on some good tape last year.

That and Mingo has done nothing and got a 4th rounder lol. I guess young
-ish cost controlled WRs appreciate in value no matter what

Vele easily performed better than a 2024 4th round draft position as measured by actual production.

Once you get past the first couple rounds it really doesn't matter where a WR is drafted as much as what they produce once they get to the NFL.

No 20024 rookie WR drafted after Ladd McConkey (Rd 2 / pick 34) finished with more catches than Vele's 41 recpts. The closest was Jalen McMillan (37).

Jalen Coker was a UDFA and finished 9th overall in 2024 rookie WR receiving yards. Vele was 10th (in only 13 games).

Round 2 (after McConkey)
Ja'Lynn Polk (Pick 37) - 12 catches / 87 yds
Adonai Mitchell (Pick 52) - 23 / 312

Round 3
Malachi Corley (65) - 3/16
Jermaine Burton (80) - 4/107
Roman Wilson (84) - DNP - injured
Jalen McMillan (92) - 37/461
Luke McCaffrey (100) - 18/168

Round 4
Troy Franklin (101) - 28/263
Javon Baker (110) - 1/12
Devontez Walker (113) - 1/21
Jacob Cowing (135) - 4/80

Best of the remaining 12 additional Rd 5-7 drafted before Vele was Malik Washington (Rd 6 - 26/223) and Jordan Whittingon (Rd 6 - 22/293)

I agree, they needed him and he's actually a pretty good player IMO who did some really good things last year.

The age is the hard pill to swallow relative to where the team is and feels like they should have addressed this in the draft with a younger player but if you get past all of that and just view him as one of their top 3 WR's, playing a specific role, where he's cost controlled for his age 27-29 seasons for a team always desperately up against the cap it does in fact make sense.

Correct

Do you know why?

It's because teams didn't know how to value him since he took two years off to do religious work
if Arch Manning took 2 years off to learn cattle ranching I don’t think he’d be a seventh round pick whenever he reentered the draft.

As a Saints fan, I’m rooting harder for Vele than his mom. I want him to catch 200 TD passes including 10 in the Super Bowl.

He’s fine. He’ll put up ok numbers. He won’t be a problem. He’ll be better with the Saints than the Broncos. He’s fine.

At the end of the day I think a 4th was an overpay, but what’s done is done. For this year, the Saints are a better team with Vele than they would have been without him. But this is typical Saints “don’t worry about tomorrow “ kind of thinking.

After sleeping on it, I’d completely zoned on Olave’s concussion history. When Olave went down last year, it would have been awesome to plug a guy like Vele in there. My bad.
