WR Kevin White, NO (1 Viewer)

I am very torn on this guy. Some things I love (size-speed combo that is basically the Madden equivalent of a 99) but I do have some worries. He was really old when he broke out, he hasn't played anything really resembling a pro offense, he is on a low volume passing offense playing across from a guy is a target hog and proven pro bow caliber player.

The complete quote sounds much less positive:

From Cutler's description, White sounds a lot like a rookie who is still figuring things out and adjusting to the NFL game. The only specific thing that Cutler praises White for is his athleticism, but we already knew about that before they drafted him. I don't see anything positive in there about White's development over the past 15 months.

A financial aid issue (unsigned paperwork?)  contributed to his advanced age.   Also, with the loss of Forte, you could see some change in their offense.  Everyone agrees that he is raw so being the #2 actually has its advantages.  The physical traits are appealing.   He also seems to have a great attitude and work ethic.

 It doesn't explain why at 21 years old he wasn't all that impressive at WVU despite being a 99 percentile level athlete. I realize WVU didn't throw much, but it is still worrisome. He's obviously not a super bright kid. Grades weren't good enough for D1. Signed up for juco or whatever level Lakawanna is and then never signs up for classes. Then he doesn't register for financial aid so he can't even play there his first year.  I don't know what kind of offense Lakawanna runs but you would expect more than 500 yards 6 TDs. I hope it works out, he is a huge talent but there are definite concerns here.

Not a super bright kid?  What does that mean? You won't find a kid alive who hasn't screwed up at some point. Concerns for everyone if you look far enough back in their past.  You're looking back at stuff that doesn't even matter or that you don't have all the facts on.   Who knows if he'll be a star but he's got the physical attributes,  work ethic,  and love for the game now.  That's plenty for me in a guy just starting out.

He just didn't have his act together. Bright wasn't the right word. I was wrong to say that. Just meant his interest in football or his priories weren't in the right place. Doesn't mean he's a bust or a bad person or hasn't gotten himself on the right track (obviously he's been very successful since). Plenty of people and players made mistakes when they are teens/young adults and ate able to straighten it out.  It just seems like he wasn't super committed to football. Now all signs point to him being dedicated. He's oozing with talent. There's just enough red flags with his failure to get himself eligible and ready for college football and the lack of production at times that is surprising from such a gifted athlete,

Fair enough.  Could be he didn't have a good mentor or other positive guidance.  We've also seen guys with incredible athletic skills or physical gifts just not be good football players, so who is to say here?  Love his upside as my 5th WR.

 
According to the Chicago Tribune, 2015 first-round pick Kevin White is "still raw" and his "developmental process is ongoing."
"Set your expectations accordingly," added beat writer Rich Campbell. "We’ve just got to get the details of the assignments and clean all that up, so that he can play even faster," Jay Cutler said of White. "But there’s definitely some ‘wow’ plays in there." White is a mega-talent coming off a full season of not playing football. He should be expected to be an inconsistent fantasy producer in 2016.

I thought people said this guy was a good route runner.  Sounds like Cordarrelle Patterson to me.

heard an interview with Fox yesterday on the radio. he indicated that the problem with White was simply rust because he missed time. mentioned that he just "needed WD-40" to get him ready. he didn't sound down on him at all.

dunno, beyond maybe the fact that he missed a year of action? he's *going* to be rusty and Fox acknowledged as much. temper expectations - and criticism - of him accordingly.

Yes, but there are zero quotes saying that his route running is poor.  No specifics whatsoever and just opinions.  Rusty could mean various things.  I'm waiting for some better info before I make my opinion on White.

you're right, he's going later than I thought at WR37 right now.  I suspect that rises, but maybe not.  I know he's in my 5th tier with Cobb and Edelman (WRs 18-27)

It's all going to depend on how well he does in preseason and the injury status of Jeffery.

sure, and he'll be one of those players whose actual draft spot fluctuates more than average.  He'll go top 20 in many drafts but maybe not until 40ish in others.

White's route running skills are still so basic, in need of serious refinement. His comprehension of NFL defenses remains elementary as well.

Even White admits as much, better understanding now the demands and details of being an NFL receiver. Asked this week how his current on-field responsibilities differ from college, White answered honestly.

"In college it was kind of get open, beat the guy in front of you and the quarterback can find you," White said. "Here it's very in depth. They want you on the numbers, on top of the numbers and that's what you have to do. In college, it was kind of like free game."

Bears WRs coach Curtis Johnson agreed with recent assessments that second-year WR Kevin White is a work in progress.
Jay Cutler and the Chicago Tribune both stated recently that White is raw. "[He needs to work on] everything," Johnson said. "Kevin had a year off. He comes from a program that really didn’t move him around very much. So now he’s getting used to the formations, he’s getting used to the quarterbacks, and he’s getting used to everything. ... He's a work in progress right now." White played right wide receiver at West Virginia, never learning to play on the left side or in the slot. Johnson did predict White will eventually be "a really, really good player."

This guy isn't so shiny to me anymore.  He's a rookie, but it sounds like he's not going to hit the ground running and give immediate returns.  He's got the physical tools which are exciting, but I think he's going to have a lot of rookie growing pains.  

The reports on Corey Coleman out of Browns camp read much differently than those of Kevin White.  I think I'm going to hop on that train instead.

 
Mistake.  White is a better wr than Coleman will ever be.  Coleman hasn't ran many NFL routes either.  Look him up.  And Cleveland is a pole of #### at qb

Reports on White today during practice at Soldier Field were that he was catching everything and looked good.

Xue has made about a 100 posts letting everyone know that he loved Parker and hated White last year. Just making sure everyone remembers.

 
I was given my choice of White for Ajayi or Moncrief for Ajayi/B Ellington.  After hemming and hawing forever, I took Moncrief.  Interestingly, 2/3 of the masses on twitter and message board polls said take White while every expert consensus list had Moncrief well ahead.

What really pushed me off the fence was Matt Harmon's Reception Perception on each guy.  Not that White got a negative report at all, but Moncrief has proven it and has way more sample size.  Anyone not using RP for their WR info is making a mistake.

Moncrief looks great...but if Hilton is having the best camp of his life, and Dorsett is the most improved player in camp according to coaches, just makes you wonder if that won't put a dent in his upside. 

 
With that offense going 3 wide and Luck poised for a bounce back year (and having Luck), I'm excited for all of them.  For me, Crief is WR5 so I just decided to go with the proven guy.  White is essentially a rookie and he's three years older and this is a dynasty league.  But like I said I wrestled with it quite a bit.
