WR Malachi Corley, NYJ (1 Viewer)

Tyler Knaeble
I can't stop watching Malachi Corley highlights...💪⚡

When he gets the ball in his hands it's an ANGER that he runs with that makes this guy one of my favorite prospects in the draft❗

Watch these highlights and tell me you don't feel the same way⬇️🔥

This is what a 30lbs difference looks like between a WR and a CB. Both players are 5’10” though.

Malachi Corley is a freaking tank 😂

Zachary Smith
Malachi Corley can fit into any WR room. Some Deebo to his game. Could be Arthur Smith’s Cordarelle Patterson

🔘Dense frame that operates like a RB with the ball
🔘Efficient footwork on in & out breaking routes
🔘Erases angles with burst
🔘Great understanding of space

Corley is one of my favorite prospects. He and Ladd McConkey I think are 2 guys that are being grossly underrated by the media right now. I think both these guys are better than the likes of Brian Thomas, Keon Coleman, or Adonai Mitchell. The NFL is trending more toward guys that separate and do their work after the catch, and in a draft littered with more old school outside WRs with size, they are gonna stand out.

Corley is gonna get the Deebo comps (which is unfair, Deebo is 1 of 1) but he is that type of player. Its hard to come up with a true comp for him. I think he's faster than Shenault was. More polished as a WR than Patterson was, and slower than someone like Percy Harvin was. Bigger Golden Tate maybe?

I was right there with ya til Tate

What's wrong with Tate?

I feel like he was a pretty raw route runner early in his career, and he eventually became a very good one. I think Corley could eventually as well. Tate's a guy who probably would had a more successful career (it was good anyway) if he were 10 years younger.

Malachi Corley is a dynamic yards after catch machine.

In the right system, he can be the next Curtis Samuel or Deebo Samuel light, but situation matters.

Strong build, good in the screen game, and elite after the catch and with the ball in his hands…

He’s interesting, right now cracking my top 12.

Lethal after the catch but definitely is situation dependent

PRO-DAY UPDATE: Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley (5105v, 207v), who wasn't able to participate in on-field testing at Combine, drew big crowd to @WKUFootball workout today.

Scouts from 31 teams were in attendance and 9 teams (!!!) sent WR coaches.

@CorleyMalachi ran two 40's, one with and one against a "pretty strong" wind. NFL scouts we spoke to had fastest times in mid-4.4 range (4.45-4.47). Only other thing he did besides position drills was short shuttle (4.26).

WR coaches present were from following teams:

𝙍𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙨, 𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙡𝙨, 𝘾𝙤𝙬𝙗𝙤𝙮𝙨, 𝘽𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙨, 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙩𝙨, 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙩𝙨, 𝙂𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨, 𝙅𝙚𝙩𝙨, & 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙨

That 👆is significant interest for likely second-rounder who was voted Senior Bowl North squad WR Practice Player of Week by defensive backs in Mobile.

Corley's value might've increased today with NFL's new rule banning "hip drop tackle". #YAC👑

What team didn’t attend?
Seems like that team might regret it. Or maybe they know what they know already.

Bob McGinn's draft series begins

Excerpt:

MALACHI CORLEY, Western Kentucky (5-10 ½, 207, 4.56, 3): According to one scout, he was the best player in the draft with the ball in his hands. According to another, his run after was “as good as anybody in the draft.” Said the first exec: “He has a lot of Deebo Samuel. You can give him the ball like they (the 49ers) do with Deebo. He’s a punisher. He looks for contact. Doesn’t take care of his body. Someone will take a chance on that because that’s what’s being valued in our league right now. He’s got a unique skill set. You would not want to tackle that (bleep).” Lightly recruited out of Orange City, Fla. “He almost plays like a running back,” another scout said. “His speed is good; I wouldn’t say it’s great like some of the other guys. Honestly, you could put him in the backfield if you wanted to mix things up.” Had 101 receptions in 2022, finishing with a school-record 259 for 3,033 (11.7) and 29 TDs. “I can’t deny his stats,” said a third scout. “But he lacked the ability to run the full route tree and separate. I’m a little concerned about his overall long speed. At the break point I thought he was all over the place and didn’t have the short-area burst to create his own separation. Where he shined was on quick hitters against zone coverage. If that’s what you’re looking for he’s your guy.”

I haven't got past him having a zillion percent pass caught behind the line of scrimmage and within five yards.
I've tried to like this guy predraft but....

The issue with a guy who you need to have "a plan" for, is that maybe the next coach isn't down with that plan.

"Malachi Corley is elite with the ball in his hands, he's an angry runner. He calls himself the YAC King 👑, & he's deserving of it. We love his mindset. We love his style of play. He's gonna bring an added element that we don't have to our team."- Robert Saleh

"Malachi Corley is a tremendous young man. Tremendous work ethic. He makes DBs pay & he fights for extra yards. The guy doesn't run out of bounds. If he had a relative standing on the goal line, he's gonna run him over too."- Robert Saleh

@32BeatWriters
Jets GM Joe Douglas on rookie WR Malachi Corley:

"In our room now, we have a different flavor, an almost pick your poison-type of room. We know Garrett Wilson is an elite competitor and route runner who can separate from anyone. Then Williams, he's ultra-productive and can run by people and also go up with the big boys on the outside.

Now adding Malachi, he really excels with the ball in his hands. When guys are really good at running after catch in college, it usually translates well in the pros. If a guy has the ability to make people miss it's because they're really an elusive high-level athlete and if they're wired to compete. Our coaches are going to use that skill to turn him into an elite route runner. He [Corley] can make people miss. The thing that jumps off the tape is how angry he runs with the ball. He runs with a vengeance, he's not looking to run out of bounds. He brings a cool element to the room."

Really like the vertical he runs, the highlighted iso 2:37 into the video. The DB is up in press & gets himself only a handful of jersey in the 5yd window & never lets go. So there they are mixing it up, then right at the end, maintaining his focus, Corley extends the inside arm out to claim just a bit of space & makes the catch for the TD. Knowing the nuances like that are often the difference. Landing spot I'm not sure of, but a hybrid who can be used any number of ways. Really like him.

#Jets rookie WR Malachi Corley said that Aaron Rodgers has offered to let him stay in his guest house, and he plans to accept that offer. Corley said he's been texting a lot with Rodgers and hopes to learn as much as possible from him.

New besties? At least roommates to a degree. Brady x AB 2.0? Could be something could be nothing but certainly interesting they’re developing some sort of chemistry.

I feel like Corley accepted the empty gesture.

I know it's been said Aaron Rodgers dislikes/doesn't trust rookie WR's, but in his 15 years as GB's starter, they did draft a few guys who turned out to be WR1's. Let's run through all the WR's drafted in the 4th round or earlier, and maybe we can figure out if he actually dislikes rookies, or if there is another reason they didn't explode in year 1.

2014 - Davante Adams (2.53) - I had to start with him, because he is without a doubt the best. In his rookie season, he had to compete with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, who were both in their prime, and were also 2nd round picks. Nelson and Cobb finished as WR3 and WR8. Adams was still 3rd on the team in targets, but you can't fault Rodgers for Adams not breaking out. Adams finished WR73 with 38/446/3.

2008 - Jordy Nelson (2.36) - This was Rodgers' first season, as he held Favre's clipboard for 3 years. The top WR was Greg Jennings, who finished WR7. He was a 2nd round pick by GB in 2006, so there is no reason Jordy would be jumping him. Aging Donald Driver was the team's WR2, but he was still producing. He was coming off 4 straight 1000 yard seasons, and managed 2 more in 2008 and 2009. Jordy, like Davante above, just happened to join a team that already had 2 quality WR's. Still, he finished 3rd on the team in targets and was WR80 (33/366/2).

2011 - Randall Cobb (2.64) - Poor Randall picked a bad year to join the Packers. Rodgers finished as QB1, but he divvied his passes to many players. His top dog was 4th yr WR Jordy Nelson, who finished WR4. Next on the list was 6th yr Greg Jennings, who was outpacing Jordy before going down in week 14. Add in a TE10 finish for Jermichael Finley, as well as WR's Donald Driver & James Jones with 111 targets combined, and there was nothing left for Cobb. He finished the season WR92 with 24/369/1.

2022 - Christian Watson (2.34) - In Aaron's last season in GB, he didn't have many options. Sadly, 5th year "stud" Allen Lazard led the team with 100 targets. But Watson led the team in TD catches (7), and tied Lazard with 11.7 PPG. Others Aaron relied on were RB Aaron Jones & TE Robert Tonyan, who combined for 112/865/7, and 4th round pick WR Romeo Doubs. Watson finished with the highest rookie WR ranking of Rodgers' career, at WR41, with 41/611/7.

2021 - Amari Rodgers (3.85) - Looks like GB picked a dud, as he was passed around to 3 NFL teams in 3 years before joining the United Football League about 6 months ago. Aaron smartly only gave this guy 8 targets as a rookie.

2015 - Ty Montgomery (3.94) - Are you really going to put Ty in front of guys that are producing? Like Randall Cobb in 2011, Ty joined a team with the likes of Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, James Jones, and TE12 Richard Rodgers. Ty was always viewed as a hybrid anyways, and after 9 seasons, has more career rushing yards (1187) than receiving yards (1159).

2022 - Romeo Doubs (4.132) - Aaron did haven't a choice. He had to throw to rookies, because his veteran WR's sucked! Here are all the GB WR veterans for 2022: Allen Lazard, a guy so bad he is currently WR5 at age 28 on the Jets, an old fogie whose last sniff inside the top 30 was 7 years earlier (Randall Cobb finished WR24 in 2015), a journeyman on his 5th team in 8 years, whose best finish the previous 5 years was WR50 (Sammy Watkins), Amari Rodgers, a 2nd yr guy who was already a known dud and only had 4 catches, and Juwann Winfree, a guy so good he has 9 career catches at age 27. Romeo finished 2022 with 67 targets, right next to rookie Watson's 66.

2018 - J'Mon Moore (4.133) - Recorded only 2 catches for 15 yards his rookie season, and spent the next 3 years trying to latch on to other NFL teams. Then in 2022, he transferred to the USFL, where he is also a dud and was released the following year.

After looking at the above 8 WR's, I find no fault in Aaron Rodgers avoiding his rookie WR's. Either they sucked, or the team had veterans that were still producing. In the lone season GB drafted WR's high and had garbage vets at WR (2022), Watson and Doubs were the only rookie WR's with 40+ receptions led by a team with Rodgers at the helm. He doesn't dislike rookie WR's - he dislikes crappy rookie WR's, and he's smart enough to know the difference.

Malachi Corley really does have a chance to shine, as he's behind a guy who gets injured sneezing.

Nice write up and valid points on Rookie WR under ARodgers seeing limited fantasy value (early?).

Yeah, Big Mike Williams will miss time allowing Malichi opportunity. What he does with that is YTD. But don't you think Garrett Wilson & Breece Hall will see extra targets if Big Mike is hindered/out?
Not sure ARodgers will give any value to the TE Conklin so maybe other RBs will step up in targets ...

Has anyone stopped to consider that perhaps Aaron Rodgers has realized that with the end of his NFL career looming, that his best chance of winning another Super Bowl ring lies with helping Malachi Corley to acclimate to the NFL as quickly as possible.

I hadn't. I read your post. Now I have.

No, I do not think that is what Aaron Rodgers has realized.

I believe Aaron Rodgers doesn't know what Aaron Rodgers thinks before he opens his mouth.
Nothing he says can be taken as reliable or truthful.

Does Malachi have a chance to be a valuable WR for NYJ?? Absolutely, but odds favor AFTER ARodgers has departed from town.

Conklin is an underrated pass catcher. He has been a top-12 TE in catches for 3 straight seasons.
2021 - 3rd in team targets, behind Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen
2022 - 2nd in team targets, behind Garrett Wilson
2023 - 3rd in team targets, behind Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall

Aaron Rodgers doesn't shy away from decent TE's. When he had Finley & Graham for 7 years, they were always no worse than 3rd in team targets. Sadly, from 2013 thru 2018, they had a TE carousel, with 6 different yearly leaders at TE. My guess is Conklin will finish 3rd in team targets once again.

I had a choice between Burton & Corley yesterday at 3.02 and picked Burton.

Y’all have me second guessing myself now. Sigh.

Corley will probably out-perform Burton this yr as Burton is buried behind Higgins
The play is throw out some offers for him mid-season or get him as a toss in of a package

However Corley is also a good pick; you should be fine
