WR Puka Nacua LAR (2 Viewers)

if Puka was anywhere near the best WR in college football last year he wouldn't have made it to the very last pick of the 5th round

Terrell Davis. Tom Brady. **** happens.
Was about to say this exact thing. Where a player gets drafted out of college means absolutely zero once they're on the NFL field.
You guys are so quick to try and find a "gotcha" that you aren't even reading the posts.

I was simply disputing the "#1 rankings" of him in college. If he truly was the #1 ranked WR, he would not have fallen that far because of an injury. See the JSN comparison.

After 2 weeks, ppr:

Tyreek: 24 targets, 16 receptions, 255 yards, 3 TDs, 63 pts
Puka: 35 targets, 25 receptions, 266 yards, 0 TDs, 56 pts
Jefferson: 25 targets, 20 receptions, 309 yards, 0 TDs, 55 pts
Everyone else

Not a bad start. I will say that Puka is not near as exciting to watch as those 2 guys, he is more like ARSB just being in the right place at the right time to get the first down and rack up the ppr points.

I find that style very exciting. ARSB and Puka got that dawg in em

I’ll take boring with ~17 targets a week.

Nacua is only ranked #43 in my Draft Dominator. That’s shocking to me. He’s got a forecast of only 8.72 PPG. That’s like 4/67 a game without TDs.

EDIT — League Dominator not Draft Dominator.

Anyone remember Eddie Royal? I would be careful with Nacua. His current low y/r and avg yards per target are all red flags. Nacua didn't have elite college production either. Also, his 4.57 40.
5 more weeks at the rate Puka is going - he will have bested Eddie Royal's top season. Eddie Royal had Brandon Marshall to compete with for targets and Jay Cutler who never strayed from throwing into triple coverage. If Puka has another 10 target game, you better come back here and apologize for comparing him to Eddie Royal.

This may be so, but hard to put any stock in that. JSN barely saw the field and yet was still drafted in the 1st round and was the #1 WR overall- if Puka was anywhere near the best WR in college football last year he wouldn't have made it to the very last pick of the 5th round unless he blew out both achilles'.
St Brown was drafted at the 17th WR in the fourth round. Were there 16 WRs better than Amon-Ra St Brown in his draft?

Yea I hear that. Personally, I think the Rams found the perfect system WR for them. He is tough, smart, has great hands, runs great routes, and is a good blocker. I don't think they are going to run Kupp into the ground if/when he comes back because they don't want him to get re-injured and they want him healthy down the stretch. I think Puca will continue to be used a lot to how he is being used now the first few weeks Kupp comes back.

If/When Kupp appears to be back at full health I still think Puca becomes a very solid WR 2/3 with upside every week due to the system. They pass the ball a ton in that offense. I also think he will be in a lot of 2 WR sets because he is a good blocker. Kyren Williams is a "jack of all trades" type back, but he is not a 25 carry guy, and I think they will continue to use Puca and Kupp as extensions of the run game. The other thing you have to consider is that if he is a great WR which he appears to be on track to be that Kupp will take away the best coverage and Puca will have even better matchups that Stafford can exploit. Why would I force feed Kupp if I trust Puca as well ?
There's a wide range of possibilities, yours is certainly within that range. I just consider it a tad on the optimistic side.

I will say that while they do pass a lot, it's not like they lap the field there or anything- I believe they finished 10th in passing attempts in 2021, last year were on pace for about the same until finishing much lower after Stafford got hurt. And for all of Stafford's volume/yards, for whatever reason he doesn't usually throw for a ton of TDs (us Calvin Johnson owners can attest to that). He had that huge season way back in 2011 where he threw for 41 TDs, but then followed it up with only 20 then next year despite throwing for ~5000 yards and 727 attempts. Then he had 41 again in 2021, but only 10 in 9 games last year, and 1 in 2 games so far this year (to a RB). I think only 1 of Puka's catches have come in the red zone so far. Just kind of odd IMO.

To answer your last question, I would force feed Kupp because he's better and I trust him more than I do Puka (if healthy, of course). ;)

Will be interesting to see (or not, depending on Kupp's health). Either way, enjoy the ride.

I think those are fine metrics to look at when you are trying to project a player and how they might do vs NFL teams but this guy is doing it in real life vs. NFL teams...one being the Niners who have a solid defense. I picked up Amon Ra his rookie year and heard many of the same arguments..lack of talent, drafted late, only option, etc.. Sometimes you don't overthink it and watch what's happening. It may not make sense but there are always exceptions to rules and sometimes you just to accept things IMO.

Reading is fundamental. Again, not what I said, at all.

I agree he's more a tackle-breaker than home run hitter. I haven't had a look at his week 2 usage, but the numbers appear similar. He's tasked with producing in high traffic areas. On a number of his routes he ran to a spot & quickly posted up, facing his QB. Other throws from Stafford deliberately led him to the ground. There were also the ones where as soon as he secured the catch he'd sink, preparing for contact. So again, yac isn't a clear measure. To me he appears very adept at the role they're asking him to fill.

In one league, apart from Brian Robinson I'm really hurting at RB. I've just offered up Jahan Dotson for priority, so that I can reclaim Jerome Ford. If that doesn't work, then tomorrow I'm offering Nacua to the Roshon Johnson owner.

I wouldn't want anything to do with the Bears offense right now until they show otherwise. I have Roschon in one league, love his talent, but he is benched for me until the Bears OC gets fired. Who knows when that happens. They might be competing to be the worst team for Caleb Williams.

No way I would offer Nacua for him, but that's just me.

Seems like huge win for the Johnson owner IMO. I think he has the ability to be decent but that Bears offense is a bit of a mess right now and Johnson has yet to have a "he's the guy" game. Puka had his coming out, and then punctuated in a better game against SF.

Basically, I'm saying I think you can get more for Puka.

If the Roschon idea is dynasty I could easily see it. In redraft no way
No way I’d do it in dynasty either. Nacua has every indication of being the Robert Woods role the Rams have been seeking for the last 2 seasons.

And Kupp is turning 30 next year, and may be dealing with a nerve issue.

I’m as strong a hold on Puka in both my 16 team dynasty leagues as I am on any of my “cornerstone” players.

I find the YAC conversation intriguing - in the preseason McVay and several analysts I trust pointed to Nacua’s strong YAC ability.

Maybe he’s just catching a lot of balls in traffic and the 2-game sample size is masking something he’s actually good at? Food for thought.

I'd like to think Puka's value has surpassed an RB2 on a bad offense in both Dynasty and Redraft, but there are people that thing he still has something to prove.

I mean, I have Puka over Roschon myself, but for dynasty one man’s early-season “RB2 in a bad offense” is another’s “heir apparent.” If you think he’s the latter, and that Puka is a wr3 when Kupp’s back, you should probably capitalize on his current value and get something thrown in but again I could see it.

I have Nacua over Johnson in a 2-player keeper league, both can listed next year in the 15th rd. This is .5ppr, production from the return game is scored. As you deduced, given that I need help at RB, is it a reasonable risk to consider that by week 8 or so, Johnson might be helping me just as much as Nacua? That was plan B, everyone here has convinced me to scrap that move.

Still nothing from my league-mate regarding my offer for priority. This offer was to my league-mate who held the 2nd claim. The owner who had priority after week one didn't make use of it because he left 75 points on his bench. Yeah, make the same offer to each & add my 12th rd pick. Appreciate the insight from you all, THANK YOU!! :)

Could it happen? Absolutely. In the absence of a strong thesis on Roschon (which I haven’t seen enough of him to personally have) I don’t think it’s a bet with +EV. But I’ve made many a profit cashing out found money for guys I had high conviction were good, so if that shoe fits try to get something thrown in

Johnson's a former QB, with a big time arm! There's tape out there, he loved throwing deep! ha-ha. Big, with a well-rounded skill set (run/receive/PP). But the resume as a ball-carrier, not as extensive as you'd like to see from a player who transitioned.

Anyway, the draft capital I included got the deal done. I now hold the 2nd claim & the team owner who's 1st is deep at RB. Yeah, he could add Ford. If he does this may end up being a bad move. My 2nd claim is going to be for Mims Jr. Like Shaheed with the Saints, Mims adds value as the primary return specialist. So, one of the two for sure. I'm hopeful the Browns bring back Hunt, a player Ford had to have beaten out. The WR I like after Mims is Josh Reynolds.

Not cheap & risky I know, but I don't have the luxury of carrying Mattison, Najee, Diontae Johnson AND Dotson.

I know this might be blasphemy but wondering if I should capitalize on Puka-mania and try to diversify my Rams ownage.

Kupp, Kyren Williams and Puka are currently on my roster... should I ride this thing out? Anyone on this board Cooper Kupp's primary care doc and want to violate some HIPA rules?

If Kupp comes back week 5... Puka is at his highest value in redraft (or Kupp is). Someone talk me off the ledge or tell me to go try and get Rhamondre Stevenson or Travis Etienne for him.

I'm a big Puka fan but if I was offered either of these (and also had Kupp) in redraft I would find it difficult to turn down. Hard to say with 100% certainty without knowing the remainder of your roster/league setup.

A tangential question: If Puka has another big week does his value go up more? Or does it remain the same?

I don’t think it’s crazy to market them and see what comes up.

That's a good question... I don't know if his value can increase beyond this without Kupp back in the offense. The knock on Puka is, "How will his numbers fair when Cooper Kupp returns?" and we won't know the answer to that question until Kupp plays. The knock on Kupp is he might not play. The major issue is, if Kupp and Puka play together and Puka continues to put up 20 fppg and Cooper Kupp is Cooper Kupp... those players probably can't be acquired.

The value assessment on Puka is all over the place... the craziest thing will be if he puts up a similar stat line and adds a TD or 2 into the mix.

Nacua’s performance in the first two weeks is such an outlier that it’s worth betting that he’s that good. There is no guarantee but historically this kind of performance points to it.

I think it’s very reasonable to see his targets, completions and yardage to moderate some as the current pace is just too meteoric. But he should also start finding the end zone too with this kind of action. Although I think there is upside here, I’m setting my expectations around 110/1400/7.

I think Stafford is that good. He's a pro's pro at the QB position and has help "make" many great wrs. I think Puka is in the right offense with the right qb.

Puka Nacua (oblique) did not practice on Thursday.

The Rams don’t play until Monday night, leaving Nacua with two days of practice still to go. Head coach Sean McVay said he plans to limit Nacua in practice due to his injury, but doesn’t believe he will be affected come game day. Nacua is seeing all-world volume in the Rams offense and has quickly turned into one of the best late-round values we’ve seen in fantasy. He’ll be a must-start high-end WR2 against the Bengals in prime time.

Anyone remember Eddie Royal? I would be careful with Nacua. His current low y/r and avg yards per target are all red flags. Nacua didn't have elite college production either. Also, his 4.57 40.
Puka was the top ranked recruit in Utah in the 2019 class he’s no slouch. He battled injuries in college and for those that were lucky enough to draft him play him with confidenc.

Giddy up,

Tex

Monday night game.

Nothing to see here right? He’s 100% playing?
I think the meme is that Wednesday is Dudesday, or something, meaning all the dawgs get to relax inside getting PT and sipping smoothies while all the JAGs have to go run drills and suicides. With them playing Monday instead of Sunday, Thursday is Dudesday.
It is Wednesday Thursday, my dudes.

Eddie Royal finished as WR22 as a rookie in PPR with 5 TDs. you don't think that has a ton of value for a guy you pick up off the WW?

as everyone knows no good fantasy WR has ever had a slow 40 - Fitz ran a 4.63, Jerry Rice ran a 4.71 or 4.59 depending no who you talk to, Chris Carter was a 4.6x, Boldin ran a 4.7, Dez ran a 4.52, Nuk ran a 4.57, Davante Adams ran a 4.56, Mike Evans ran a 4.53, Cooper Kupp ran a 4.62.

if you are hung up on his 40 time from the combine 2 weeks into the season where a guy had 33% more targets than the 2nd place target leader in the NFL you are missing the entire point.

let's say he gets half the targets he has now - that would mean he has 17 which would put him tied for the 8th most targets in the league. which still has value. his value isn't getting artificially pumped up by catching a bunch of 2 yard TDs or weird plays around the goal line that end up with him scoring.

Indeed. I would always rather have the guy that can just get separation and catch the ball, rather than someone reliant on speed for production

Puka Nacua is already a nice value and has to potential to be an incredible value with each week with even modest production most weeks. If he only finishes in the top 30 of WRs he had a great season.
