Here’s an example of his effort on blocking

He’s got some great interviews too. There’s one after the Bama game where he talked about seeing all the Bama players showing up to the game in their fancy outfits and Louis belts but how once they got on the field he could tell they didn’t really want it. He said he’s not the toughest guy in the world but he could tell the Bama players wanted the glitz and attention but didn’t want to do the nasty stuff it takes to earn that. He thought they were all show.

Wilson is a compact, muscled-up wideout with elite burst and explosiveness. He didn’t see as many targets as others in this draft class because of Michigan’s dominant rushing attack. He is at his best when he’s on the move, especially on deep-over routes. He attacks the leverage of the cornerback before exploding across the field and running away from his opponent. He gets matched up with safeties at times and that leads to enormous separation and explosive plays. He showed more versatility as a route runner at the Senior Bowl. He can drop his weight at the top of routes and work back downhill. He has strong, reliable hands. After the catch, he relies on his speed to generate chunk plays. Overall, Wilson lacks ideal size, but he has rare speed and quickness. He reminds me of Packers WR Jayden Reed and I expect Wilson to make a similar impact at the next level.

PLUSES

-- 16 of his 48 catches last season were explosives; Wilson can scald a defense from anywhere on the field.

-- I keep thinking "Future Miami Dolphin," because he's so hard to cover and track upfield out of any kind of motion.

-- Brings impressive toughness for his size (5' 10¾", 185); he has no problem with catching the ball over the middle when he knows he's going to get smacked.

-- Understands how and when to sink into his routes by reading the defender, especially in zone coverage.

-- Physical nature of his play extends to his ability to get handsy within the rules to force short-area openings.

-- Devilish foot-fakes and burst at the snap allow him to beat press coverage.

MINUSES

-- Three outside targets in 2023; he's going to be a slot guy in the NFL.

-- Wilson gets contested catches by getting away from the defender and eliminating the "contested" part; he's not going to win a lot of 50/50 battles.

-- More of a "point of catch" weapon than a true YAC factor; his game is more about getting and staying open.

-- Blocking isn't great, but if you're debiting him for that, you're probably looking for a different type of receiver.

Remember how effective Victor Cruz was as a speed slot target for the Giants back in the day? Wilson has a lot of that kind of juice.

He'd be wasted on a lot of heavy TE teams; his best bet is to land with a team that wants to air it out wide with vertical stuff, and will design concepts that allow him to get free in space. Because he's a monster when that happens.

ROMAN WILSON, Michigan (5-10 ½, 186, 4.38, 2-3): Assumed the featured wideout role as a senior in 2023. “One thing you’ve got to consider, they’re such a run-first offense, he probably needs some time in route mechanics,” said one scout. “But, athletically, he can do whatever you want. I would compare him in many ways to Garrett Wilson. He’s that kid of athlete. He can play outside or slot. Good hands, explosive after the catch. Wilson’s bigger than the Boston College guy that went to Baltimore.” That would be Zay Flowers (5-9, 182, 4.38), who caught 77 passes last season as a rookie. “He’ll be a starter, primarily in the slot but he showed he can play outside,” a second scout said. “Good separation ability. Like his hands. He can be a threat down the field. Plays bigger than his size. He went up there and was able to pluck some balls in 50-50 situations. He can be a solid No. 2.” Finished with 107 catches for 1,707 (16.0) and 20 TDs, including 12 in 2023. “He’s the most overrated player I’ve seen,” said a third scout. “Slot only. All zone production. Not a natural catcher. One of the weakest receivers in the draft. Cannot block to save his life. Has no special-teams value. If he goes to a team that has a slot he could easily be on practice squad or being inactive every week because he’s got no other value. If he was at any other school he’d be graded very late in the draft. There’s a reason he was a one-year starter. And who was he trying to beat out? Where are people seeing him go? I'd like to own some shares of this guy. The down side is Arthur Smith and a run heavy offense. But PIT knows WRs and I've heard so many people talk this kid up from scouts to ex-players.

Might have to be willing to be patient with this guy but there is need in PIT for another WR. Question is though, how many targets might he actually see?

Just took him at 3.04 in a SF

So hard deciding between him, Baker and Corley tbh they were all on the board. Burton/Franklin/Mitchell all went just before mixed in with Lloyd/Sanders/Wright.

I was in the same boat with Baker and Corley on the board at 3.02 and couldn't decide so traded back and grabbed Wilson at 3.06. Hopefully the streak of PIT drafting great WRs continues.

This statement from the article is why I am cautious, "Of course, various factors contribute to each of these numbers. For one, each player is different. The offensive coaches are also different, meaning the schemes won’t be the same. I get it."

Arthur Smith is there and will run the ball as much as possible. But, Smith didn't have a QB that could do anything in ATL. Can hate on Russ and Fields but they are both better than what was in ATL.

I'm cautiously optomistic on Wilson. I also might flip him if he hits early as he seems like a guy who lots of people like and are routing for.
 
I’ve done my usual and gone back and done the rounds on opinions etc after drafting someone ( I was frantically doing it across multiple fronts on Wilson, Baker, Corley etc as I made the pick ). Somehow missed Reception Perception as I made the pick. Harmon really does not like Wilson at all. Gives a slight lift for the landing spot in terms of hole in the roster he fills and Steelers history with WR, but yeah I’m now scared ( loose sense of the word )

Reasons he can buck the Harmon opinion …

- dawg
- high character traits leading to higher chance of improvement in perceived weaknesses - mainly subtleties of route running, and effectiveness in different types of routes
- Steelers being a good club for coaching
 
He is one of 3 Rookies expected to start Day 1 for Pittsburgh including 2 new additions at LT and Center, 2 new QBs that bring a lot of NFL starts under their belts and can agdjust their style and game management as needed to allow this offense to be on the field more and the defense a little less in '24.

If Mason McCormick can push somewhere along the IOL, this rookie class might see 4 new starters on Offense from the Draft plus a new QB, that is HALF of the entire offense and a new OC, I would pretty much throw what you think you know about the Steelers offense out the window as you try and figure out production/stats across the board

Year 3 of Pickens who flashes maturity issues enough that you take notice and put a little mark next to his name on your tiers....
Van Jefferson? JAG if you ask me, if a rookie cannot elevate past Jefferson then he shouldn't be on the field.
Wilson himself never racked up big stats at Michigan all 4 years but he steadily came on
48/789 might not sound like much, he did score 18 TDs last 2 years including 12 as a Senior.
He is on the lean side but he also has high yds per catch for a guy coming out of college, 16, 15, and 16 yds his last 3 seasons there, he works the ball down field.

I believe he is going to play the slot or will see his most work as a rookie in that position. Pickens and Jefferson on the outside.
I don't foresee BIG numbers his rookie season but I think long term he has a good looking future on this team.

I saw that as well but eventually he fell far enough I was willing to take the shot and bank on the fact that Pitts continues to hit on their WRS and they have a big need at WR right now. Knowing all this I will likely flip for a 2nd rounder if possible and take the value provided. Hopefully he gets some big camp hype as I already have a few people in my league poking around seeing if he is available. I have no problem flipping this guy.

You hate to see it. Wilson had a pretty clear path to the #2 WR job, though that would arguably be the #4 target behind Pickens, Freiermuth and Warren.

I think if it ends up being serious the biggest winner is Freiermuth.
 
Rapoport tweeted it’s not serious. Will be week to week, but should be ready before the season opens.

Tough that he’ll miss reps but the Stillers already know they have a good one. Clear path to the WR2 IMO.
 
Real bad timing, sounded like he had a direct path to a lot of snaps early. This could set him back months or even a whole season.
