WR Sammy Watkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

8 targets, 2 catches is brutal ... were the throws that bad ? I didn't watch the game
one was a pass from Fred Jackson that the safety broke up.

another would have been a likely interception by Brandon Flowers on a deep pass to the corner but Watkins broke it up.

some were forced into tight coverage.

don't remember Watkins dropping anything remotely catchable.

If you watched any of the game you witnessed two things. Manuel having a poor game, and the O line not playing very well.

There will be growing pains with that Offense. I still am not a very big fan of Manuel for the record.

Andre played his career with Hall of Fame level QB Matt Schaub. Wait.

Rotoworld:

Sammy Watkins noticed that Kyle Orton "reads it quicker" and the "ball is coming out faster" than it did with E.J. Manuel.

It sounds like Watkins was getting sick of Manuel's shortcomings and is looking forward to the Orton era. "The way he talked, the way he handles business, the way he looks at plays and breaks down defenses, it's kind of different than EJ," the rookie wideout said. Through four games with Manuel, Watkins was on pace for 68-788-8. Orton is a bottom-barrel NFL starter, but he can only help Sammy's box scores.

Either EJ commanded no respect in that locker room, Watkins is a callow rookie loose with his words, or both.

At this point, he is nothing more than a glorified clipboard holder. Respect is earned. Even from the rookies.

Pretty sure reporters baited him into that comment, but it should also be obvious. EJ was playing scared much of the time.

Sammy Watkins had seven catches for 87 yards in Sunday's Week 5 win over the Lions.

Watkins benefitted from having Kyle Orton at quarterback, and finished with a team-high 12 targets. He deflected a pass to himself for a 22-yard catch that set up Buffalo's game winning field goal in the fourth quarter. Watkins is still in one of the worst quarterback situations in the league and remains a boom-or-bust WR3 going forward. He has a 24/284/2 line through five games.

That last catch was the highlight play that won us our game today. No offense to anybody else on our team, but we're headed to OT if anybody other than Watkins was the target there.

This.

When you pay the price that they did to get Watkins, this is the reward you get. A guy that can win you a game. Dez did the same thing today for Dallas in OT.

Watkins will be helped tremendously now that he has an actual QB throwing him the ball. He is an outstanding teammate and one of the most well spoken, respectful kids I've ever heard so he would never throw Manuel under the bus but he has to love the change to Orton. He has already stated Orton makes much quicker reads in practice.

Watkins is almost always open. Manuel just couldn't make the throws to him. He has been "college" open a lot so far this season.. it has to be frustrating when you are constantly open and your QB just isn't good enough to make the throw or doesn't see you.

Watkins made an outstanding catch on the game winning drive to put the Bills in FG range. Orton found him but the ball wasn't perfectly throw (behind him) & Watkins tipped the ball with one hand back to himself and made an amazing grab to seal the game. He ended his first game with Orton with a 7 rec / 87 yard performance. I think he and Orton continue to improve with more experience and he has no problem breaking 1000 this season.

He's at 24 rec / 284 yds / 2 TD thru 5 games.

That is a 908 yard pace but I expect some much bigger games from him now

That outstanding catch he made to set up the game winning FG is the reason they traded up for this kid. He is a special talent & very few WR's make that catch. It's scary that he is only in his 5th NFL game. Can't wait to watch him in the 2nd half of the season once him and Orton get a lot more practice time together

why does this guy often seem to have 1 or 2 catches for eh yardage and then play well in the 4th?

He has a date with Revis this up coming weekend. Now I am not sure if Revis will play as he left this week with a hamstring injury, but if Revis is declared healthy I would not be starting Watkins this week. Revis had shut down AJ Green last night up and till the point he was hurt and left the game. In fact the first play of the game after Revis left went for a td to AJ Green.

Revis allowed 3 catches for 60+ yards last night, according to NBC last night, so it's not like he is gonna shut out receivers. Granted, Watkins, as good as he is already, is no A.J. Green yet, but he is still becoming an every week starter, especially now that he has a QB who can actually get him the ball (not that Orton is that good, but he's at least better than Manuel).

Sammy is quick as a hiccup. If Revis can check him all day, I'll tip my cap to the old fella. But the matchup doesn't scare me.

Good catch, but where is that great yac some of you were preaching? He just ran and fell down...
Not sure if this is fishing or what, but if you watched it, it clearly shows his right cleat sliding on the turf. He was trying to make a cut, but the turf wouldn't allow him to do that. That doesn't mean he isn't/won't be great at YAC, it just means he slipped.

Julio would have caught it clean and taken it for a TD. Then again Julio has Matt Ryan for his QB who would have thrown the ball in front of him instead of behind him..

yea so Julio wouldn't have caught it clean and taken it for a td, your comment makes no sense the ball was like a foot and half behind him it was amazing he could tip it in the exact direction his body was going and be able to pull it down..... Im not saying Julio wouldn't make that last catch like Sammy but he wasn't taking that particular ball to the house, mark my words. As far as Orton, Even he will make sammys numbers go up. EJ was Turrible.... LOL

Yeah, it's totally unacceptable for Orton's timing to be off. He's been on the team for well over a month, and had taken first team reps for at least a few practices going into that game.

according to PFF, Revis has given up 14 receptions on 24 targets for 197 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Seems good but not good enough to be super worried about.

Sorry, it was meant to be read as a casual post.

I watched it and nothing is clear about it. The run after the catch isn't easy to see because only the catch is highlighted from a bunch of angles and it doesn't show the play all the way through. I must've missed the slipping

On the first clip (before it starts going into all the angles), you can see his cleat lose purchase and kick up a line on the turf as he tries to make his cut.

I don't like rookie WR's that much but definitely bought in my money league. Very excited with him having a capable QB moving forward.
